It's a-coming!

I can't believe I made it this far. And without any schedule slips or anything. Heck yeah. Namesake is going well it seems!

Right now, I want to draw Harry Potter and friends. I just got some of the movies on blue-ray for my birthday, and the new one just came out, and I want to buy it and i'm all like Wizards Wizards Wizards. Go figure. I have a lot of love for the actors. Especially Rupert Grint. That guy is like super laid back. And he rides an ice cream truck (for real).

So.... next post will probably contain some Harry Potter. *laughs*

They really should not have comic conventions like the TCAF at the beginning of the month. There's like a million books I want to buy at the TCAF to get it signed by the authors... and all my money is going to rent. CURSE THEE TIME! I definitely plan on bringing my copy of "Shadow Eyes" to get it signed by Ross Campbell...

My stellar self-confidence decided to sink again while I was checking out the exhibitor list on the TCAF website. I mean, so many of these people are amazing. I feel like i'm not good enough to even walk the same ground... Link says that it's clearly the best of the best listed there, so I should flip out less and not compare myself to living gods and focus more on talking to them. *sigh*. I wish I have things like self-esteem and charisma.

So, I found a neat new pen brand to try out. It's basically a calligraphie pen, but instead of dipping it in an inkpot, it has a cartridge in it and comes in several sizes (my favorite being ultra-thin). In a way, using a cartridge pen is kinda lazy and expensive for no reason I guess, but I love how practical it is. I can carry these a lot easier then an ink pot. So far, the results are pretty good! So I might buy other sizes.

I drew Agha, the munchkin character from Namesake and Aang and Katara with it. Everything is adorable and classy. I'm kinda amused that Agha is so popular with the readers. I was kinda expecting people to find her annoying, but she's loved! Which makes me feel pretty good. I love "small" characters like her, munchkins, dwarves, hobbits... I'm sad they are often used as comic relief. I loved versions of dwarves that were as rocking and fantastic as elves. They deserve so much more love. I think I might actually draw a whole bunch of dwarves this week! :D

Did you guys heard about the Hobbit movie in preparation? There's BOUND to be some cool dwarves in that one. There's 12 of them!

I'm taking it easy this week. My health still seems a bit... iffy. My body feels overtired. But i'm still in good spirits. I'm going to try to make a bit of an update cushion for Namesake and work on my super-special-secret project. I can't wait to tell you guys about that one!

Oh, in June, I'm thinking of, for the second time ever, opening commissions. Try to see what I get out of it. Maybe nobody will want anything. First time I tried I got like... one. All money made with said commissions would be going to fuel the Namesake ads all over the internet. Anywho, we'll see. I,m not opening the commissions before then because the super-secret project is taking all over my time.

I have other super-secret awesome news... But i'm keeping it under wraps... until the next post!

...........I kinda screwed up Aang a bit. It's because of the new pen, I tell you!

Oh, it's rare but... MEME TIME! I actually like this one :

Meme taken from EVERYWHERE.

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I will reply saying:
* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

Hey guys!

First off, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] asatira , [livejournal.com profile] the_flowergirl  and [livejournal.com profile] earthstar_moon ! Sorry for not having sketches you guys! Things got busy over here and I haven't drawn much. I'm distracted by major amounts or paperwork, teeth pain and people. Next week will be quieter. I shall draw then.

In other news, I really need to make a to-do list. I'm having trouble making heads and tails of what I gotta do. C'mon Isa. You are more organized then this! I think i've been pushing back the making of the list being seeing all my tasks lined up is a little scary.

Among the things on that list, I wish to include the acquiring of new skills. For starters, I want to learn how to use Illustrator. Second, I want to learn to draw with a graphic tablet, in Photoshop. Not just color. Draw. I also want to learning how to use new inking tools, like calligraphic pens. Art is beginning to take up more and more of my time. I think I may wanna look into getting a part-time job next year or something. Need to start saving money :D

Last post, [livejournal.com profile] novabat  drew this.

Here is my reply.

Yep. Take that. :D Have a cuddly griffin!

This morning, on deviant art, I saw a fantastic fanart of Namesake by Hyacinth-Zofia. It's Ben, Emma and Elaine. I love how they all look in this. Especially Ben. Way to be badass.

Yesterday, I went to a conference about using the internet to promote yourself as an illustrator with a friend called Fanie. It was good. It was mostly stuff we knew already, but it was nice to see it all organized in bullet format. There was a lot of older illustrators though, that asked... good questions I guess, but about really basic internet stuff (so it kinda felt like I was back at work at that point. A the joys of working tech support). So we left to eat sushi. Oddly enough, I learned that Fanie as not seen Tangled or Beauty and the Beast. Clearly, I need to inflict these movies upon her.

After that, I got home, crashed on the couch with Link. He had started to watch a movie, so I joined him. The movie was called "The Blindness" and it promptly proceeded to violate my brain. No, really.

Tho take the resume from Tv tropes : "In an unnamed large city, an unexplainable and sudden outbreak of instant blindness is affecting people rapidly. In an attempt to prevent the epidemic from growing out of control, those suffering this are taken away and forced into a derelict mental asylum and held there until further notice. But the military guarding the place becomes increasingly hostile to the inmates, keeping them in at gunpoint. The government refuses to allow in basic medicines, so the hygiene and living conditions degrade horrifically within a short time. The protagonist is the wife of an eye doctor, who was among the first people to go blind. Because she is mysteriously immune to whatever is causing the blindness, she acts as a leader of her ward and tries to keep control over a situation which is rapidly deteriorating. It gets worse. Much, much worse."

This movie is TERRIFYING. Everything is realistic. You know people react this way. And that's scary. The wife, the only one who can still see, goes from a cute housewife to an amazing, badass leader. The movie ends on an uplifting note, which kinda makes me forgive it slightly for scaring the nervous system out of my brain. It's honestly a good movie, but it's not relaxing.

Looks like I got a cold now. I was freezing during the whole movie. I didn't notice the window was open. I guess I got a cold as a consequence. Nooooo! I don't have time to be sick!!

Teeth problems being slowly solved. Still got a few wisdom teeth to remove.

While my face wakes up, have a few cool things.

First off, sorry for being so quiet. Things have been crazy over here. Plus, Lj has been offline a lot. In any case, Namesake is a few comics short of hitting the 100th comic mark. Woo! we are getting more and more readers too. Seems a lot of people like Oz. Heck yeah.

To celebrate and to encourage donations, I'm working on a new wallpaper. The theme for this one is "Witches and Wizards of Oz". You got Ozma, Selva, Glinda, Renge (or Jellia), the Scarecrow, Chiseri, Anlise and Warrick surrounded by all the ladies of magic. You also get to see what Hercilia looks like a human. This is going to be pretty sweet, fully colored and inked, I can tell you that.

Aside from that, I recommend that all aspiring artists read Austin Kleon's "HOW TO STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST (AND 9 OTHER THINGS NOBODY TOLD ME)". It's hilarious and pretty much true as a whole. It's basic rules we all know, but it's cool to see them listed and drawn out.

I've been going crazy on etsy. I wanted to reward myself for all my hard work (I just love me... No but really, I earned it), so I decided to buy some jewelry. Of course, I went for the geekiest stuff there was. I bought Harry Potter themed bling. Oh yes. A metal bracelet that said "Expecto Patronum" and a golden snitch necklace. Aw yeah. i'm cool and I know it, kids.

In other news, why haven't I heard of Michael Pangrazio until now? This dude is a painter of WORLDS. He drew the "backdrop" for scenes in movies like the old Star Wars and Labyrinth. You know, before there was blue screen and computers, there was him, making a wall look like the blasted HORIZON. Kudos, sir Pangrazio. Kudos. Technology marches on, but you still work in character design and exude awesomeness.

That's all for now.

Stuff...

First off, Happy St-Patrick's day to all! It's a good day to dance to jaunty music. Or drink booze. Whichever Irish stereotype you prefer, really.

Good god. I need so much sleep. But Jabberwocky is almost over. I plan on finishing the pages and illustrations on Sunday. Then all that will be left to do during the upcoming week will be touch-ups, wording and the cover. Oh my god. I actually did this. I will actually have managed to compete a full comic in a month. Jeez louise. I honestly never ever want such a crazy deadline ever again.

Link is going to be shading my namesake pages for the next two weeks. He's so sweet. Check out today's page if you want to see his handywork.

I'm currently pondering some ideas. At home, I have several fabric bracelets kinda like these :

Mine have monsters and robots and dinosaurs on them (you know why). Well, just yesterday, I found this website where you can print your own fabric and then buy it by the yard. So I though "These fabric bracelets of mine are really cool. And they sold really well at the con where I bought them. IDEA!". I'm thinking of printing some fabric with pretty drawings and making some of these bracelets. I already found instructions on how to make them. I wish I knew where I could buy the buttons to close them... But this plan could be awesome.

Anyways... Have some more Jabberwocky...

This post is going to be a mix-match pile of stuff methinks.

First off, my boyfriend is really awesome. I,m glad I have him around. He'll be doing all the coloring and shading for "Namesake" until i'm done with "Jabberwocky". This helps a lot. It's a good 6 hours of work I don't have to do every week. Yay! Plus i'm not very good at it so...

I found an amusing drawing on the internet showing how to create an icecream cake. I want to make this so bad. As soon as I have more free time, you bet this is happening! (Original art by the French Toast Girl). I love ice cream cakes. This one is like... custom. I should use soft sunday ice cream though. And maybe mix the cookie crumbs directly in it.... YUM.

For a lactose intolerant girl, I sure like eating them forbidden things.

Oh, and awesomeness - The studio behind the Gorgeous film "Secret of Kells" is working on a new movie called "The song of the sea". This movie seems inspired by fairy tales such as the "Mermaid Wife" or "The Seal woman". It's fairy tales similar to the "Feather dress" in the sense that it is about a fantastic being that sues a piece of cloth to change fro her magical form to a human form and that she is bound to a man who hides the cloth. Sometimes, the wife is truly in love. Other times, she is a prisoner. This type of tales are amazing, and i'm sure this animated film will be as well. I can't wait.

Click here to watch the teaser trailer. Yes. You want to.

On this side, Jabberwocky is going well. Only 10 or so pages left, if I include all the extra drawings. Heck yeah.

As soon as Jabberwocky is done, I have a few commissions to work on (mostly, wedding invites for a few people). Then some storyboard work and some more comic work... I'm really busy but I love it. Though, as soon as Jabberwocky is over, i'll be able to put a bit more of my free time on the social side. The other projects aren't quite as insane.

Drawing is awesome.

So, this weekend was very quiet for me. Instead of drawing for 12 hours ike I usually do, I got company. [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  and [livejournal.com profile] earthstar_moon traveled several hours to visit me, which allowed me to take a good break. I still finished getting ready for the Geekfest (which happens next weekend, ont he 5th of March) and I finished my Namesake pages, so it wasn't a fully free weekend. But I didn't do any Jabberwocky. Which means that starting tonight, I have no social existence to speak of until I darkened 25 pages in ink. I've got five done, currently. 20 to go. Could be worse! I honestly needed the break. It was a good weekend. We plotted for Namesake, watched Megamind, went to chinatown, got good food and maple pastries... It was a relaxing and tasty weekend.

But not I need to go back to being an overworked hermit. It's a little sad, but that's what artist needs to do, amiright?

I checked out the Oscar winners yesterday. I'm disapointed. Oscars are so political. They have always been, but at least before, some of the judges would have a little integrity and at least include a few less-known or independant films. Nowadays, it feels like they don't even try to hide the political aspect anymore. Oh well. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the winners myself, but it really feels like the whole thing lacks diversity and variety. Who wants to watch an almost 4 hour long show and see the same actors and movies come back all the time? The song performance we're pretty. I enjoyed that. I'm sad that neither Tangled nor Summer Wars got included in the animation section. Boo.

At least the Oscar fottage totally fueled my current obsession for Anne Hathaway. No, I don't know why i'm all about that actress right now. It's a little weird, but i'm just going to live up to my weirdness.

Oh well. Time for work!

Before I go, fest your eyes on this gorgeous Namesake fanart by Ripaille, who's coloring skills clearly exceed mine. I wish I could steal her coloring talent.

My apartment is going to feel so quiet tonight... O_O

Emma is going to be in so much trouble!

Namesake's fourth chapter starts next week. Here's the cover! Yeah. Usually, I'm more in advance then this. I really dropped the ball. Bad artist, bad. I really like the mood of this cover. It really feels like a dark thunderstorm and heavy rain is going to start. And the ghostly figure there... she's going to cause some trouble. Emma looks a bit more badass then usual. But the characters is expected to gain several levels of badassery as the story goes by (then, when she gains enough levels, she'll evolve to her next form... no wait....)

This is probably going to be one one of my favorite chapters to draw. Except no, not really. And yes. I have to draw a lot of vegetation. That's long but fun.

So, to confirm things, YES, I am going to the TCAF for reals. I got a ride, a place where I can hang out (my editor's booth) and probably a book (Jabberwocky), so i'll be around. I'll let you guys know more details closer to May. There's so many people I want to see while i,m there... Gosh that weekend is going to be amazing.

I think i'm going to make a little dent in my banking account and buy some dvds this week. For almost all the month of March, i'm going to be an anti-social hermit since drawing Jabberwocky is going to take all my free time. But inking for hours without entertainment is BORRRING. I need to score some new Tv series. Maybe Castle? Maybe I could buy Star Treck. Or Buffy. I can't buy anime though, since I can't read subtitles while I work. Boo. Fullmetal alchemist has a decent dub though... hummm...

Or I could just do what the rest of my friends are doing and watch "My little pony". Yeah.

In other news, as some of you may know, my boyfriend Link as a braided rattail. Well, it's gone now. Choppity-chop. I kinda miss it in a way. It was a nice boyfriend-handle I could grab. Now Link kinda looks older. He even wears clean "adult-mister-person" shirts. Well, I guess he's gonna turn 27 next week... Wow, time sure flies.

I swear to god i'm going to find interesting subjects for posts soon. What's with all this rambling?

Okay!

I'm participating to a convention called "Geekfest" here in Montréal on March 5-6. It's not Namesake related. Actually, it's for an activity that got planned way before namesake was born. It's for a character draw-a-thon. Basically, poeple come to see me, describe characters and can leave with the sketches or leave them to be posted. BUT I still want to use the event to indirectly advertize Namesake because... well, because!

At first, it was suggested to me that I should print postcards as Namesake ads and draw on the other side, so that the requester doesn't loose the Namesake URL, since he won't want to loose his drawing. However, I learned that printing postcards was expensive, and the cardboard wasn't quite good for inking. So, instead, I think i'll print some business cards, and I got a stamp made. I'll give out cards and stamp the back of the drawing. So, they won't loose Namesake :D

So to resume, there's a few things I need to get ready for the con...

- Business cards
- Stamp
- Poster for booth
- Buy lots and lots of pencils and pens
- Get reimbursed by con staff for pens
- Get lots and lots of sketch cards (4X6 minimum and at least 200 of them)
- Get a tip jar
- Get something to attract people on desk (A giant pikachu? I have one! Or something?)
- Fix online portfolio prior to con

I know there's a lot of people on my con list that have attended cons either as goers or artists, so to you have any tips on how to make a booth look really snazzy? What attracts you to a booth? I'm usually attracted to the drawings themselves, so i'm doing some posters. :D

Here are my card and stamp designs... Yup, the cards are double-sided.

SKULLLLLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

With all this con preparation buzzing, I can't seem to get much more then sketches done. I really like these. Most of these characters aren't actual characters. Born to exist for a sketch. Why is that girl making the "dat ass" face? I don't know...

At least it's proof that I can draw that face. Oh no, the world is in for it now. I have the power of the bitey lip in my grasp.

ps. EEEEEE I GET TO DRAW FOR A WHOLE WEEKEND OMG
secondlina: (Default)
Another day, another page. Namesake updated this morning. Recently, me and [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  noticed that we got two reviews for Namesake on the internet, here and here. Generally good/encouraging reviews. One of the main recurring elements in reviews such as these and in many, many, many comments by friends is the fact that the art is gorgeous, but the sporadic coloring is annoying and distracting. Basically, for those of you who don't know, the comic goes from color to black and white more-or-less randomly because I don't have the free time needed to color. Also, i'm not much of a colorist to start off with. Though I myself like this type of coloring, it seems most people don't.

With chapter 4 coming in, we need to take a decision on what to do next. Among our options, we can :
  • Make the webcomic full color. This will however require us to either purchase a time machine, make the update schedule more sporadic or outsource the coloring. The problem with this idea is that i'm not Doctor Who, I don't want to make the updates more spaced out (3 times a week already doesn't seem like enough!) and hired help usually likes getting paid.
  • Make the webcomic fully in black and white. The problem with this issue is the fact that color is often important to the story.

So what then?

The best compromise I found was not to eliminate the color, but to regularize it. I mean, what's annoying for Namesake readers is not the color itself, but rather how random it is. So from now on (aka, starting chapter 4), I was thinking doing things like this :
  • The chapter page and the first 2 to 3 pages of each chapter are in color.
  • The rest of the chapter is in black and white, with small details or isolated characters in color, as seen on these two page :

I think it's the best idea to keep the comic regularly updated, have me survive the process and keep things pretty. What do you guys think? Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

- Isa

p.s. Have some sketches of Emma. I love drawing her so much it's crazy. Mostly it's her nose and hair. I can't wait to get to put her hair up.

Long story short, I got real sick for the past 4 days. Fever and all. That was accompanied by various levels of an identity crisis about my job, my comics, what I wanted to do with my life, my friends, etc. Because, apparently, i,m a suffering artist or something. Now i'm pretty over the sickness and the woobiness and I came up with a few ideas. The main idea is, I really need to make a list of goals and tasks. Keep myself organized. I think have a big board with that will make me feel good. Or maybe a journal?

I need some change on the artsy, life and job front. Time to get things moving. And making a list and checking it twice is a good start.

I don't have an ideal pocket journal. I used to always have a journal on me. I sorta have one now, but it's not perfect and I guess that discourages me to use it? My favorite type of journal was those half-notebook, half-agenda things. But I can't find one ANYWHERE. And I looked!  Isa wants her perfect journal.

I don't want much from life, but honestly, I love having the perfect bag, journal and pencil case. I change bags often since what is the perfect bookbag often changes according to my needs. I still have the perfect pencil case. It's good to have these things for me. It makes me feel more complete.

I had a friend that used to tell me that a person needs 5 things in life to be happy. A good job, a good project, a good love/social life, a good house and good gear. What qualifies as "good" is relative to people, but more and more, I think she's right about this. My "project" (comics) have always been on the fly a lot and disorganization and lack of a long-term plan is slowly killing me. The job, I often selected to just generate rent. I'm starting to notice that dissatisfaction there really affects the rest more and more.

Bottom life is, I need a plan and I need these five circles to be more balanced. I've always though that motivation and trying things once in a while would eventually get me where I want to go, but the more I speak to artsy gals, the more I think motivation is not enough. I really need to plan more starting now. I need personal goals and deadlines more then the general "comic artist eventually" idea.

Deadlines like "next year, two books published" and "go to these cons" and stuff.

I think this sickness allowed me to clean my body a bit and clean my soul. I felt incredibly stressed for the past few weeks and I finally feel like someone yanked my heart out of my chest and put a new one in to clean my blood.

Or something.

Heck, i'm babbling.

Lately i've been working on con posters. I'm doing an activity at a local con a friend of mine is organizing, so i'm gonna throw in some Namesake advertizement, because why the hell not? :D I really love the mood in this one. I wanted to do one with just Emma and Elaine and one with all the characters. Basically one showing off the cast and the other showing off a mood.

And of course, TEXTURES.

S'all for now.

Except not really...

I just learned a few weeks ago about this upcoming movie called the "Witches of Oz".

The story is : Dorothy Gale discovers that her best selling novels are actually based on suppressed childhood memories of her time in Oz, and that she may be in danger of experiencing it all over again.

Christopher Lloyd ...  Is the Wizard of Oz . REALLY? NICE. I think my heart just stopped. DOCTOR BROWN!

You can visit the following website to see a teaser trailer of the movie.

My reaction to this movie is strange. Half of me is going "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, a potentially good Oz-themed film, oh my god!" while the other half of me is going "Great, something else with a really high budget Namesake has to compete against". But I think the "Oh my god" part of me is winning. Why? First off, that movie actually looks good, and the director actually seems to be a Oz-book-reading-and-loving dude. Second off, I picked popular fairy tales as a subject for Namesake. The fact that other things would come out was to be expected. Not to mention the adventures in Oz is just the first chapters of Namesake. Third, i'm a sucker for anything with the Oz witches. Fourth, interest in Oz from a lot a viewers might actually be good for Namesake. The only thing I don't like about this movie is how they made Dorothy the writer, editing out Baum completely. Kinda what Tim Burton did with his Alice movie.

But, hey. The special effects look rad. Amiright?

This was suppose to come out in 2010. Got pushed back to 2011. But it seems to be doing well, since they have the whole cast and actors listed.

Next post will have a drawing, I swear. Bad lazy panicking artist, bad!

 Hey there everyone!

Last month, I told you guys I was participating in the Comics creator alliance, a donation drive that starts on January 11th and finishes on January 24th. You can now purchase this cool wallpaper featuring a whole slew of character Brady Bunch style. All the profit goes to help end National Human Trafficking.

You can check out their website for all donation possibilities (you can buy posters, last year's art, this year's art, etc). This year's poster is really fun and it showcases a wide range of talent. Be sure to also check out the who's who page on the website to lock on and locate all these wonderful webcomics. some of these artist draw some of my favorite things!

Minimum bid ia a dollar (mostly to avoid cheaters who only donate a cent just to get the wallpaper and be done with it). But even a dollar is an important contribution, so don't feel bad if that's all you can give!

Emma, star of Namesake, and I are proud to be a part of this.

Here's an encouragement drawing for you peeps, it's Snow White and Rapunzel, the first and last ladies of Disney. Who technically suffered from abusive homes, were kidnapped and trapped for most of their lives. Because trapped girls don't get out of it as easily as in Disney movies, please donate!

And most of all THANK YOU!

For starters, I have a tumblr now. Right here : http://secondlina.tumblr.com/

I'll be posting on it drawings and things that I didn't make, but like. I'm also going to be posting as rapid-fire reruns all my old comics posted here, from all the way back in 2005. So if you feel like seeing secondlina oldies, it's a good spot!

This does NOT mean i'm leaving LJ. I love livejournal. Also, on Tumblr, people can't leave comments, and I hate that. I'm just trying to have more things to spread my art around and get my name known on the internet. and Tumblr re-blog feature is pretty efficient for that. So now, i,m on twitter, tumblr, deviant art, and livejournal, livejournal being my main blog, the heart and soul of it all.

I also have two websites, my portfolio (the needs re-vamping) and Namesake (that does not need re-vamping. It's gorgeous).

And that's about it. Most remember to update links on Lj and elsewhere.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] chameleon9999  made me a great Namesake fanart of Anlise, the questionably good witch of the North. Isn't it just gorgeous?

Hiya guys!

I finally got my new glasses!

It took a good day to get used to them (since the prescription is lower my eyes suddenly went "What, we have to work more? Heck no. Have blurriness!") but I think i'm good. The headaches seem gone (aside from the default "change of prescription" one I always get). It's a really different style from before, but it must suit me nicely because NOBODY noticed. I take that as a sign of "it looks natural and good".

I doodled a bit, mostly catching up on my pages. But I drew this really cool image of Emma in "Emerald City" fashion (including the goggles of course). It's one of the rare times I've drawn her smiling. Emma never smiles. She smiles a bit on the promotional material, but that's it. I think this is the widest smile I ever drew on her. I like little details like that though. Deciding what expressions a character uses it a lot. The face is where the personality of a character is shown.

At work today. It's so quiet. Quiet quiet quiet. People are still on vacation methinks. I'm jealous.

But not linked to the holidays!

I finished coloring the cover for Namesake's 3rd chapter that should start during the holidays. I kinda wish I had more free time to draw during the holidays, but I just have 2 days off :( So i'll be working while many of the people I know party. Party for my, you guys!

Cover's lineart can be seen here. THIS took 3 hours to ink.

This cover Shows the princess of Oz, Ozma and the Wicked Warlock of the West, Warrick. There's also skulls. The skulls are there because the upcoming Oz storyline kinda plays with how inconsistent death was in the Oz books. Sometimes people died, sometimes not, sometimes you had to literally obliterate someone for them to be considered dead. In the later Oz books, no one can die. One of the books assures us that while you are in the Land of Oz, you can not die. Unfortunately, this information comes after characters in the books have been chopped into pieces, beheaded, melted, and so forth and it is mentioned that you could be transformed into an inanimate object, turned into sand, and buried. Even so, you would still be alive and presumably conscious.

Baum puts it this way in the third chapter of The Emerald City of Oz: "No disease of any sort was ever known among the Ozites, and so no one ever died unless he met with an accident that prevented him from living." It's also mentionned that what keeps the people alive and not aging is a spell. So we are going to play with that in the story.

Really, I just want an excuse to draw skulls :D

Oh, man, I am so broke right now.

I went to the eye-doctor. Turns out, my glasses were not giving me a headache because my eyesight went down. No, it improved. The lens' were TOO STRONG. Thus causing constant headaches. So, since I needed to change the lenses anyways, I bought a new frame to replace the frame I hate. That poked a nice hole in my savings, lemme tell you that. I think i'm going to cut back on spending for a bit, you know, so I can pay for glasses/doctor bills/dentist/christmas stuff. Oh well. I never though not having insurances would be so expensive, but I guess it is! *laughs*

First off, I finished a lovely piece of art for the Namesake website. There's a webcomic update that fall on Christmas (since it's a Saturday0. I don't want to skip an update, but I don't want to put a page on Christmas either. So I made funny holiday art.

It's the Namesake Gang (without Emma and Warrick, who are busy in Oz) in front of the portal/door to Christmas Town from "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Seemed like a fitting joke, considering the skeleton man is named Jack too and Burton has his own version of Alice going. Also, I adore those holiday doors from the movies. Those are some cool portals. Not as cool as the little door in Coraline, but close!

Also, Jack's hat cracks me up so bad.

I also drew this :

But this is for the Comic Creator Alliance. What is the Comic Creator Alliance you ask? Well, It's a group of Comic Book Creators (mostly webcomic authors), who have come together, volunteering artistic talents to raise money for the purpose of ending human trafficking. A bunch of artists get together, create a group wallpaper. The wallpapers (and posters) are given for donations and the donations go to help eliminate traffic of children kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. I'm all for stopping that. So I volunteered. Emma and the Cheshire Cat will be part of the wallpaper.

I'll let you guys know when the wallpaper is available. Donate if you can. Human traffic is a pretty horrible thing. You get to contribute to stopping it and you get art. Good things indeed.

Artists on my list who have female characters? You can also sign up as artists! Please do. The more people, the better!

This is the 5th charity thing i'm getting involved with this year. For a cynic, I sure like signing up for these things.

Sketch for [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  of our Namesake characters, Alice and Jack. I decided to color it because I almost never finish any Namesake sketches, aside from the comic pages. And that's not cool.

[livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  is a pretty epic Alice/Jack shipper. Though it doesn't mean the couple is official or anything. OR IS IT? QUICK, LOOK AWAY TO THE SHINY NOT-PLOT RELATED DISTRACTION!

I love drawing Alice. Why? Because her proportions are non-existent. I mess up her proportions on purpose to make her crazy skinny with long legs. That's how I wanted the character to look. I wanted her to be mostly legs. She was one of the character that really came to life quickly. She has almost always looked like this. Her costume was a little different before, and she had long hair for a few sketches, but Alice really came together quickly, with a side of hot badass.

I love awesome ladies in books/movie/tv series. I'm a little sad that some turn out to be less badass then promised. In a lot of comics, a girl is shown as powerful, capable, awesome... And then she winds up getting saved all the time. Sometimes it's because the villains are just too strong. But really, how come the hero gets to win then? I find that odd.

Another odd thing of the week. I was re-reading my Sailor Moon mangas and noticed something a little ridiculous. Mamoru (Tuxedo mask), in the 16th book, leaves for the USA to study. And Usagi (Bunny/Serena/Sailor moon) is sad, because she won't get to see him often. Then, about a chapter later, you see this same girl teleport to another country and other sailors teleport to other planets! HELLO? Why is she even sad? SHE CAN TELEPORT? I love this series, but I think it's hilarious that everytime I read it, I notice something that doesn't work with the logic of their own universe. Weird.

Ad designs for Namesake's current ad campaign. These babies are going on the Girls with Slingshots webcomic page. It's basically two frames of an animated ad. Isa likes. The ad mixes a whole ton of various fairy tales. Much like the story.

Tangled is out in theatres! I'm very happy. I wish I could go see it. But my life just got sidetracked pretty epically. So i'll probably check it out next week. I got the art book anyways. I want to see this movie something like 200 times.

Tomorrow will be long. More on that later.

I finally participated to this online meme I really like (can be found here) where you basically choose a little "cat" sketch, and make a character out of it. Here are mine.

They are like...sisters. From a evil possessed-hair family. The big sister hates looking after the little one. The hair doesn't mind.

In other news, i'm going to be gone tomorrow night and all of the weekend. I didn't end up celebrating Christmas last weekend because Link mixed up his dates. It wasn't last weekend. It was this weekend. Link needs to be a bit more organized. Still, I get early Christmas. I'm going to visit Link's family in a village around Montréal. I'm bringing Namesake pages to ink.

In other news, Namesake now can host project wonderful ads. Woo! I don't think we'll get much income that way (it's not really my goal to make money). But it's a nice space for friends and artists to expose themselves!
