Namesake book 1 Kickstarter

As of 2 a.m. ET, we have officially launched the Namesake Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to print book 1! Participating in this campaign is the same thing as pre-ordering a book, so if you are wanting to lock in a pre-order (and make sure we get your name as a thank you in the book), please order through the Kickstarter. We will have an extra update on Wednesday showing the book cover, images for one of the rewards and how to participate.

What is Namesake?

As you guys most likely already know since i've been talking about it non-stop for a while, Namesake is the story of Emma Crewe, a woman who is stolen in the aftermath of a library fire and is dumped in a land made famous by literature and cinema. She learns she’s a Namesake, uniquely connected to this world by the power of her given name, and now she must act as the story’s protagonist as she figures out how to make her way home. But as Emma travels, she discovers that those controlling her story have their own selfish goals in mind – and her fate is the key to everyone’s happy ending.

Book 1 of Namesake contains the prologue through chapter 5 plus a 5-page bonus story (the 144 pages, guys, with the original spot-colors) The funds would cover the print job, the purchase of ISBN numbers and some extra leeway for shipping, Kickstarter and Amazon fees, rewards, etc.

Thank you for supporting Namesake! We greatly appreciate all forms of support, may they be moral or monetary.

...Punctuate every sentence with a large "thud".

Because I keep dropping all over.

I'm kinda tired. Been working the bookstore job and the school presentation job a lot lately. I'm not sure why all the schools decide they want their special literature classes on the same months (January and February). Must be a budget thing or something. But i've been giving at least a class per week. It's fun to give classes, but golly gee. It's a lot of work.

At home, i've been going into overdrive drawing wise. Meg, myself and Link are combining our awesome powers to create the Namesake first book in about 2 months (only one month to go). Link is doing all of the re-tooling work (re-colouring the pages that are crap and making sure there isn't any mistakes on the ones that aren't). Megan is re-wording everything and preparing the print file and the Kickstarter campaign. And i'm drawing stuff for the Kickstarter and for the book.

So whew. Lots of work. But so far, everything is spot-on on schedule. So I think we might finish in advance. The Kickstarter should start soon. The book is chapter 1 to 5, including the prologue and a bonus story. So it's going to be big.

I already polished up the front and back cover designs. Behold :

Imagine there's going to be text in the big blank spaces. The Cheshire cat is on top of the ISBN number. Many thanks to Link for doing the vector shapes.

I decided to buy the Hunger Games books. Because people keep talking about them. They kinda sound awesome. And I feel a bit ashamed that I haven't read an actual novel in like 2 years. Bad, bad Isa.

A drawing of Holly, for my buddy Sanne. Holly looks like her hair is made of melted sunlight. So I wanted to use partial coloring like I do on Namesake to really push the attention to the awesome that is Holly’s locks.

Happy birthday, Sanne. Let me love you.

Well, i'm totally going to go see the 3D release of Beauty and the Beast, I think. I really want to see the Tangled short and I just love BatB... So... Yeah. Disney sure knows how to get my money. Those sneaky guys.

In other news, Namesake will be officially at the Toronto Comic Art festival in 2012. Meaning, now me and Meg have about 2 months to get the first book (collecting chapters 1-5) done. I'm working on creating the covers and possibly finding some bonus material. Any ideas?

I'm working on pin-ups of all the characters (male and female, the only exempt ones are going to be the characters who are minors because that's just creepy) as a fundraiser motivator. I like these. I like doing classy and sexy pin-ups. Kinda like bruce Timm. He is the pin-up master.

Classy yet sexy under cut (Not safe for work) )

Oh, I just finished watching the "Goofy Movie" while I was doing my pages today. MAN. It was so 90's. I felt like I was back in high school.

And it was awesome.

Warm and fuzzy feelings for the New Year, you guys, from the Namesake gang.

Seriously, go hug someone you know. Go now.

I'm going to be a bit offline for the next few days because, for once, i'm going to partaaay for the New Year. Okay, by party I mean watch Disney movies with a bunch of bookworm friends while drinking bubbly things and eating chocolate but that's good enough for me. :D

I've been on a huge kick to re-watch movies from my teens. Like "10 things I hate about you" and "Ever After" and Burton's Batman and all those things. I tried to track down a copy of the Goofy Movie. BECAUSE I NEED TO WATCH IT. I'm still finding all the silly pop-music... catchy to my great amusement.

In other news, been reading a lot of manga to do reviews and classifications for the bookstore website. Right now, i'm reading Monster and REIMEI NO ARCANA. One is a story about a serial killer. The other an interesting shojo about a princess sent to wed the son of her enemies. I'm really enjoying both. I recommend!

I have like 25 jokes about cats to draw. I've been hanging out with too many cat lovers lately.

I had fun drawing Emma getting hit by a snowball for the Comic Creators For Freedom’s new anti-human-trafficking fundraiser. I participated last year too. It's basically a bunch of webcomic creators making a giant wallpaper together. All the download money goes to help stop human trafficking. Calliope is all about defending young girls, so you bet that a Namesake character will be all over that. I'll let you guys know when the wallpaper is up for download, so you can donated if you feel like it.

Some of my good friends are also participating. It's going to rock.

Aside from that... I've been having fun trying to redesign the superheroes Cloak and Dagger. I LOVE these guys. For those of you who don't know them, it's basically a duo of "mutants", aka teens who mutated when experimental drugs were tested on them. The girl developed the power to manipulate and fight with light (she throws "daggers" and purifies people). The guy manipulates darkness and swallows positive things in his big cloak of death. Here's the original :

It's a neat concept. If I ever had to do a mainstream comic, I would want to do these guys 10 times over. I'm going for a more teen look. Dagger is the fighter, so she gets pants... I'm still working on it, but I like where it goes. I want to buy a whole bunch of old issues of these guys. Maybe I will.

Monkeys!

Dec. 3rd, 2011 11:36 pm
secondlina: (Default)

Since I am totally ruining the twin’s lives on Namesake via flashback, I decided it would be nice to draw them happy, for once. So, here’s Selva and Warrick, with winged monkeys, because nothing puts a smile on my face like a monkey that can fly. And since these guys are inhabitants of Oz, you can sure bet they got to play with those silly flight-powered monkeys. Warrick is without his trademark cloak (dubbed feathercoat by friends), but you can clearly see large marks on his body… what are those? You’ll find out in a few pages!

In other news, I'm pretty excited because the new Avatar - Legend of Korra opening was leaked on the internet. Yep, i,m a nerd. A giant nerd. This just makes me want to draw Aang, so i,m totally going to go draw Aang for a while. It's a bit silly, but among the imaginary characters that I adore, Aang is in the top 10. I kinda wish I could be as fun and positive as him. Be my spirit animal, Aang.

Oh, wait, I forgot, my spirit animal is a crow.

So, i've been kinda ditching my artwork and seeing folks this week, mostly a group formed by the girls from the bookstore I work at. Hum, everyone is awesome? All the girls are kind, funny, creative, and we get along extremely well. We've got ideas for themed meetings and a list of movies to watch that should last us for the next two years, or something. It's turning into a fun little exchange group, since almost everyone is an artist or a writer. It's like... Ah, I dunno what it's like. Amazingawesometastic? Can that be a word? It's that fun.

I actually feel a lot better then I have for a while. I lack time, I lack health a bit, and I lack money, but I feel surrounded by great people, old friends, new friends, online friends, family, inspirations, and despite that glitches from my life I actually feel like I could cut a mountain in half with a chopstick. It's a good feeling. So, happy Isa. :D

I think I just needed a break and more balance or something. I need to learn to relax more. Be zen with the bad in my life when it happens.

One of the girls of the group even drew this really great Namesake fanart. I mean, look at it. Doesn't it just rock?

Also, I just learned that this new "Avatar the last airbender" comic is coming out. It's basically what happens between the end of Aang's series and the beginning of Korra's. YES, PLEASE. I just want to draw Aang and Katara a million times. Yes. I think I might just do that.

So,i've been working hard with my buddy Fanie over here to prepare some calendars to sell at Expozine. Basically, it's fairy tale themed. we each do 6 drawings for all 12 months. And it's going to rock. Hopefully, we'll make a bit of money with this!

Here the drawing of the beauty and the beast I made for said calendar. Isn't he the cutest?

Oh, reminder, My shirt on "We love fine" is up for voting, and the deadline is October 24th, so if you haven't yet, thank you for taking the time to do it. If you have, many thanks, you guys are awesome.

You can vote here : Voty vote vote.

In the liquor store next to the bookstore where I work, there is a skull-shaped bottle full of expensive vodka. The skull bottle looks amazing. I really, really want it. I swore when I saw it, I would buy it as a personal favor when Namesake reaches 10 000 readers on a single day. Last Tuesday, we were only 3000 people short of that goal. The readership is truly growing. It makes me incredibly happy. Maybe soon, I will have this skull bottle in my life, and the vodka it contains, to celebrate my achievements...

You know, for the whole month of October, no matter how busy and real life gets, I can't stop thinking "THIS IS HALLOWEEN MONTH THIS IS HALLOWEEN MONTH THIS IS HALLOWEEN MONTH THIS IS HALLOWEEN MONTH, ETC ETC".

My Halloween party will probably just be about me, kicking back and watching Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice with some folks, but what the heck. It's fun to celebrate the creepy side of life. Me love the creepy side of life. It's my favorite side of life.

I completely flabbergasted (Woo! important word of the day) Link yesterday when I told him I had never eaten pumpkin pie in my life. Never. He was pretty amazed and asked me about 10 times if this was true (really, really true?). And then he bought a damn pie. So i'm guessing i'll be loosing my pumpkin-pie-virginity (is that a thing? It should be.) in the next few days (hot). I also took out my super warm PJs. Because it is time for fuzzy pajamas. Look out to the balcony while the leaves fall and my body is hidden under layers of superfuzz.

That's the good life.

Oh, hey, Namesake art! Someone asked me to do a Warrick commission, so here it is. This isn't a "real" event, but I though it was cute, and warm, and I love drawing that have this type of mood. It's so comfortable-looking.

So, i'm still sick. I think i'm going to have to spend the week in bed. Sorry folks! I wish I could party. I do. But I have to stay here and look damn sexy in my baggy pajamas. Rrrrrrrr.

Good news today, Namesake is officially a year old. It's not doing quite as well as I would have hoped, but the updates go well, we seem to have a stable readership that goes up a bit every month and I still love doing it. So all and all, generally a success!

Other good news, the "Monster in Paris" soundtrack is available on the North American itunes. You have to type in the French name ("Un Monstre à Paris") to find it, but it's fun and includes the English songs. I can't wait to see this movie. I plan to go with a couple of the girls from the bookstore. :D

In... neutral news, one of my balcony chairs is pregnant. With a family of squirrels. We left the cushions on the chairs for too long, so a group of squirrels decided to dig inside of one to make a nest. We brought the undamaged cushion in and kinda let them have the other one for the winter. It's already ruined anyways. And it's kinda cute. There's babies and they stick their heads out for tiny holes. We'll probably take care of them a bit (remove the snow from the chair and such). It kinda sucks that they did that since the cushion was really comfortable and the chairs matched and they won't anymore if we buy another one... But...heh. Such is life. Sometimes stuff goes well, and other times, a squirrel eats your chairs.

Last and not least, you guys should check out this college humor video [livejournal.com profile] ichiban_victory sent me while we were having a discussion about inappropriate female fantasy gear. Aka, nothing to protect those very vital vital organs.

Still working on commissions. I finished this one for [livejournal.com profile] snapdragon!

That is all.

Back from two days of convention. Oh god, it was kinda horrible. I'm not going to go into details right now, but I worked harder at this con then any other con before. And I had some pretty difficult cons before this! Long hours, alone for five tables for a good while, no change, etc, etc. It was. Yurk. Not as well organized as it could have been. The con itself was pretty fun, I got a couple of comics signed. But oh god, my legs. My brain. My eardrums. It all hurts. Ark. But the artists were friendly, and the people too, so it balances out.

Tomorrow, I work again, but only at the bookstore and on website stuff, so it's going to be quiet. And then, in the evening, i,m going to go see the Lion King with a friend. I promise i'll answer your comments tomorrow. But for today my brain is just going FDGDFGRGTRHGBGN CAN'T COMPUTE.

Also, apparently, it only takes the command of three people (asatira, Lily and Juba) to make me draw something. I was asked for a color drawing of Wendy.

So, no, it’s not ethnic River Song, though the resemblance is there. This is Wendy, one of the main cast of my webcomic Namesake. Wendy is the Namesake linked to the world of Neverland. She is part of Calliope, the organization that takes care of Namesakes like her, in a kick-ass team with Alice and Jack. Wendy can fly, has two daggers and a gun and she is the proud wearer of the seven league boots. She’s basically a little army on her own. Despite how much evil jerk she can destroy, she remains the heart of the team and the team mom.

I love her.

In other news, check out this video kids. This man in a piano prodigy who composes emotional pieces on the fly at 16 with no formal training. He is some kind of genius. A Pollock of music. :D

I love him too.

And a vampire I drew to conclude things. I also love vampires. This is still for the kid's clothing thing.

Now, for a shower and bed. I feel like the con was a bit of a bath of B.O. I need to wash it off. It was pretty hot in the building so everyone suffered from it.

Wow. My brain seems to want to make this into a story, or something.

Today, i'm going to have some serious meetings for illustration contracts. I hope I get some! They sound like fun and money is always nice. I'm also thinking of re-doing the Namesake Banner on the website. It's too small and that bugs me. Plus, I changed the character designs a bit.

I drew a poster for the con I really love. Behold, the awesome :

By the by, has everyone heard of Wacom's new Inkling

The product is described as thus : The Inkling digital sketch pen captures a digital likeness of your work while you sketch with its ballpoint tip on any sketchbook or standard piece of paper. Designed for rough concepting and creative brainstorming, Inkling is ideal for the front end of the creative process. Later, refine your work on your computer using an Intuos4 tablet or Cintiq interactive pen display.

Basically, it's a pen you can sketch with on paper. And it records what your doing and you can then transfert it to the computer. As vectors. Or scans. WITH LAYERS. I'm not gonna lie, I want this a lot. I dreamed of something like this for a while. Of course, in my dream it was a brush, but one step of technology at the time. This is going to be awesome for sketching. A little useless for doing comic pages, but it's going to make it pretty easy to produce sketch to post online....

Bottom line is : ISA LIKES.

Plus it's pretty cheap. 200$. I was expecting 1000$ when I heard about it.

Namesake art! This art will be included in printed form in the issue we'll be selling at Fan Expo in two weeks.

Well, now begins the countdown to my super-busy-last-two-weeks-of-august which have two weddings and a convention. Could ahve bee 3 weddings too, but two happen on the same day in different cities so I had to choose. So yeah. I'm going to be going to work, traveling to Toronto and Ottawa and drawing like a mad woman for the next couple of days. LET THE RACE BEGIN.

Thankfully, stuff is awesome and i'm pretty generally ready for all events. I have a lot to do, but it's mostly taking care of details. Like going to fetch the Jabberwocky re-prints (YAAAAY MORE BOOKS!)

Today, I got a bit of a wind of nostalgia since I picked up the new american McGee's Alice game from a buddy yesterday night. and also discussed Final Fantasy 9  with Link. That was a good game. Gets a lot of bad criticism but I love it. Then again, i'm just a casual gamer. So i'm not much of a connaisseur.

I'm loving that the internet exploded with fanart for the upcoming French movie "a Monster in Paris". It's fun to see French animation get attention. I really can't wait for it!

EEEE!

Tomorrow is work, but it's cool. Go, book peddling!

Have some sexy dwarf ladies in corsets. I drew this for a commission. Man, I love drawing dwarves. My favorite fantasy race by far. no idea why :D

Moreso...

A couple of days ago, I tried to see if I could get a ticket to a midnight showing of the new Harry Potter, since I had a day off the next day. It seems like an experience that would be fun to go thru. Unfortunately, everything is sold out. Oh well.

Tomorrow I get to work on convention fanart prints. :D Wonderwoman and Avatar is on the planning. :D

I'm kinda proud of myself. today at work, I re-organized the american comic and the European fantasy comics section. The fantasy one, I just placed things nicely and made sure there wasn't too many doubles. In the american section, I classified everything alphabetically by title. It used to be classified alphabetically by editor and then by title, but it made things a bit difficult to find, since editors for the French versions of american comics are a bit more complicated then the original English version. For instance, Marvel comics are handled by two French editors at the moment. It's all nice now. People at work seem to be taking my suggestions. It's cool. It's like wow, finally, validation. I also built a fairy-tale themed display window with fairy tale inspired comics and some drawings all over. It looks pretty!

I'm a little sick-ish again. Everyone in the comic department got the flue last week and it seems to be hovering around me. Bleh. I also need to buy better shoes. My current ones are a little run down. There's holes and it hurts when I stand too long.

In other good news, Namesake got one heck of a glowing review. Check it here

Have some Alice to celebrate.

Man, I want to draw a bunch of comics so bad. I'm really loving all these comics other artists are posting online. Short little things, just a couple of pages, but always so gorgeous. Like Emily Carroll's dream journals or Ryan A.'s strange and dark universe. Love. Love. Love. There's just a huge lack of short comics i'm not doing. This journal needs more comics. All I keep posting is illustrations. Comics dammit! COMICS!

At least i'm motivated.

Still no news about the trip to France to attend the Lyon Comic Festival. I'm going to clear that up this weekend with my editor. Which is a good thing because this is currently super-last-minute. Yikes. I'm currently working on drawing all the Namesake pages I need so that the comic updates while i'm gone. Considering there's like.... 12 pages needed, I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it. Thankfully, friends have offered to do some guest art, so whether I manage to or not, at least the comic will update. I don't want to go on hiatus. I really feel like going on a hiatus while the comic is still developing like that is basically putting a death sentence on it. So i'm using other solutions.

In other news, my parents are back from their travels across the USA. My mother actually got me some Alice and Oz themed stuff she found around (they also stayed at an Alice in Wonderland themed Inn. No joke. STEAL THE LAMPS, MOM. STEAL.)

I started sketching again in this simplistic style I really enjoy but don't use often. Here are the "Thor", "Avatar" and "Namesake" themed results.

Due to the sheer popularity of these two characters on Namesake (www.namesakecomic.com), I decided to make a print. It turned out great! (Sorry about the fugly cheshire watermark guys... Since it's a print, i'm obligated to mark it)

So, basically, you've got an image of Emma and Warrick under... something that is the Oz equivalent of a peach or a cheery tree. More purple. What I really adore about this image is that Emma has the sword and Warrick, a flower, and it looks very natural. Both characters end up switching gender roles a lot, which I love. Warrick is holding a poppy, the symbol of the princess of Oz, Ozma. Emma's sword is a rapier, a French sword, ideally used for thrusting attacks. The Cheshire cat is just... around. He likes to be around. He goes as he pleases. He's a cat after all!

In other news, this weekend was rough. Sometimes my body just decides it wants to eliminate me (and sees no flaw in it's own logic), so I spend a weekend feeling sick and in pain without really being sick at all. It's pretty annoying and exhausting when it happens. As a result, I found getting up this morning to be an annoyance.

But before getting up, I arranged the duvets in a big circle, making a nest, and kinda cuddled with my pillows in that. It was awesome.

Pillows and blanket forts or nests always improve a bad mood.

Behind... on things.... Ack. My job decided to suddenly get busy as hell. So I get home pretty tired. Bleh.

Yesterday was good. Link got me some cake, some pony toys and a batman shirt. :D

I spent a good part of the day thinking of my parents. Mostly because I went to have tea with some artist friends who spent a lot of time saying bad things about their own. In some cases, justified bad things. It seems a lot of people around me either have bad parents, or a bad relationship with their parents. Which is kinda sad. I'm pretty happy generally with my parents, who are currently roaming the united States (and sleeping in "Jabberwocky" themed hotels. No. Really). My parents are comic book fans and have always supported me in art. They were kinda strict when I was a kid, but I was also spoiled, so really, I have no reason to complain. A few people seem to think my parents were overly strict to me (for instance, I wasn't allowed to play with others on weekdays because I had to do my homework) but in all honesty, I think that made me a very self-disciplined person. In general, I like the results of my upbringing, so I don't really have "horror stories" like many of the folks I know. My parents are even still happily married. No divorces or anything. I was a lucky kid in a lot of ways. They paid for painting classes and comics. I seem to have learned more about comics then painting though *laughs* Oh well. They overly worry, and the overly smother, and I totally have my father rotten temper, but all in all, compared to many others that were beaten and shunned and even just ignored by their parents, i'm a lucky kid. I feel really sad when I hear stories about bad parents, or stories about estranged families. It always seems like a piece of those people are missing I guess. Yesterday, I was overly analytical about a person's parental figures. I sorta regret that a bit. But at the same time, I don't feel you should cradle people who let bad parenting affect their character as adults and flaunt it as an excuse. Thankfully, this person doesn't do it quite as much as before. Improvement.

Basically - bad parenting sucks. It takes a long time to get over it. But I can't admire a person that just doesn't try to get over it. and I know several of those. Heck, a guy I know outright used the .I cheat because my father did" defense. Uncool.

On another subject.... FRIENDS!!

The brilliant [livejournal.com profile] piratecore  has create an epic Tardis-themed shirt. If she gets enough votes, said shirt will be sold on Threadless. Wanna own a Tardis shirt? Vote. VOTE. VOTE!

The humble but unfortunately ill [livejournal.com profile] amiraelizabeth  is taking commissions to be able to pay bills and such. She does amazing Avatar - The Last Airbender stuff, so if you feel like lending a hand and getting spazzy art out of the deal, click here.

In other news. I am very frustrated. WHY? Because there's some truly amazing things happening around me at the moment and I. CAN'T. TALK. ABOUT. THEM. YET!! But soon, hopefully. Soon. Still no word from the Canadian Council of the arts to see if i'll get the grant allowing me to go to France next month. It's getting close. At least I got my passport.

Also - DUN DUN DUN. Colored namesake art. Booyah.

Emma always looks pissed off or worried.

Day off

May. 23rd, 2011 12:28 pm
secondlina: (Default)
Today is a national holiday in Canada. So, i,m gonna stay home, do some laundry and draw. I'm going to draw a lot. Because that's honestly what I like to do on my days off. Stay in my kimono-ish bathrobe and draw. Well, I might actually put on jeans, since laundry is outside the apartment. Unless I can convince the boyfriend to do my bidding. Hum. And maybe i'll fix up my bike too. As many of you know, biking is something I adore. I could seriously bike all day, every day. It's right up there in my favorite things with eating, sleeping and drawing.

Kung Fu Panda 2 comes out next week! I'm seriously stocked to see it. I loved the first. so there. The new "Pirates" movie is out. I kinda want to see it too, but I think I might just wait for the DVD release. I like Jack, but I'm not too sure about the quality of this sequel. It sounds like a lot of awesome scenes strung together with poor plot. Then again, it has mermaids, so it might just get me to go see it in theaters just for that. *laughs*

This was a pretty good, relaxing weekend. I felt sick for most of Saturday morning. But I got better. Friends visited to celebrate my upcoming birthday, which was nice. I also managed to score some new comics. Woo. One day, I think I might actually classify my collection with the Dewey system or something. It's so large. *laughs*

Not much to talk about, I gotta say. Basically conclude from this that I have done little work this whole weekend and mostly just relaxed like a cat spread in the sunlight of a window. Yeah.

I did finish these namesake drawings. They are for convention flyers. I wanted one to be kinda funny and the other, Dramatic. So one is two girls in a pile of books, and the other is Emma having tea with "past incarnations" of Alice, Wendy, Ozma and Dorothy. And the ghost. Hey, we'll get to see plenty of the ghost in the next cuple of pages. I can't wait. I love drawing her.

Well, that's it.

So, first off, happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] amelia_seyroon ! Have some art featuring the amazing ladies of Slayers. Why? Because, LADIES. And also, because you're part of the people that always make me think of Slayers, and with whom I will always have that fandom in common. So cheers.

On another note, I saw Thor this weekend, with [livejournal.com profile] starmetal_oak . It was an interesting experience. First off, yeah, I pretty much confirmed that I don't like seeing american action movies in theaters anymore. I don't know if it's because I suffer from motion sickness, but halfway through the film, I always feel dizzy and nauseated thanks to the crazy cameras swooshing all over. Gargh. But, I digress. The plot itself was really fun, I liked the characters. Loki was awesome. Thor's little band of warriors could stand to be more awesome though. I mean, aren't you guys the greatest warriors in all the land? Odin's wife kicked almost more ass then you. And she's the goddess of plants. Anywho, the movie is general was fun and about as good as action flicks get. I have to admit, I spent about half the movie guessing what was going to happen in the other half (and I was right). But you don't really watch action movies for originality. You watch them for the action, and the fun characters. And this movie had both these things. And the story itself was very logical in it's own universe. And pretty. Oh god, so much pretty. The men and the special effects were gorgeous. So yay!

I've been talking to [livejournal.com profile] ichiban_victory  a lot lately. Like many others who seem to be giving me feedback on it on deviant art, she has fallen in love with my gender-bent "Beauty and the Beast" idea (this project really needs a title. Too bad I used "Rose" already). We keep brainstorming for ideas, and her being the animal lover she is, she has a lot of ideas on how to make the beast girl move and live. She even made a body chart :

I got my own sketches done too, of course. This is her protecting her "prince", who is actually a hunter in this version.

In any case, i'm kinda sad I won't get to play with this project for a little while. I want to get some comics done for a couple of anthologies first. Booyah.

Oh, Namesake got another review. Check it out!

Sometimes I don't feel like a very nice person. I'm lucky enough to have friends that are awesome with their big hearts and inspiring with their amazing art. Yet, sometimes, I feel rather jealous of their talent and fame. And then I feel bad for feeling jealous. Go figure. I wanted to be a comic artist my whole life, and more and more, i'm seeing that 3 things are really required to make it. Talent, work and luck.

Talent is the obvious first criteria. It doesn't really need to be talent in drawing itself. I've read comics that have really moved me. The story was amazing, but the art was just okay. A good comic artist should have talent in drawing, or storytelling, or both. True talent will get noticed, and will make a lasting impression.

That's when the second criteria comes in - work. Talent is nothing without the work. If your goal is to be a comic artist, you need to a work a lot, and mostly for free for your first few years. You will work to produce pages. You will work to improve yourself. You will work to connect with other artists and readers. The amount of work needed often varies depending on the amount of talent. There's some people out there that turn everything they touch into pure sequential gold. And often, for those people, the work required to accumulate readership and interest is smaller, since the work speaks mostly for itself. But there is still work needed. Nobody likes a lazy person, and lazy artists don't produce.

The last required element is luck. You can be talented, you can work hard, but a certain amount of luck will define where the work goes. Take webcomics for example. You can have the world's greatest webcomic. You can have ads all over the internet. But you still need luck if you want people to click on it. You still need luck for another comic artist to mention you on their blog and such. Luck helps you be at the right place and time. It's like a little pat on the back the universe gives you. And the more you work, the more luck you seem to accumulate. If you network a lot, chances are you'll meet some amazing people who know other amazing people, etc, etc.

So all these elements really depend on each other.

A fourth elements I kinda want to add is confidence and/or knowledge. Which is where I think I fail.

I work hard. I'm fairly talented (I think). And i'm pretty lucky, generally (as mentionend at the top, I met some pretty incredible people. I want to hug all of you so much!). But I have very little confidence and knowledge. As in, "I don't know what i'm doing and it terrifies the crap out of me". I'm always the type of person that would have a list, or a plan. I'm terrified by how little I actually know about the comic world. And this lack of knowledge makes me very uneasy and really wrecks havoc on my self-esteem (that is, let's admit it, really small and meek to begin with!)

I wish I had a mentor, a guide or something, who owned a book titled "Sequential art and marketing for dummies".

But watcha gonna do. The best I can do is stay calm, be proud and try to learn by trial and error gradually.

I'm hoping to learn things this weekend at the TCAF. Learn things and meet people. Learn things from people. I look forward to this. Well, that and buying a pile of comics of course!

Anywho. Enough talking about insecurity and such. Time to focus on work!

Have a Namesake sketch :

I’m amused that most people seem to adore these two already on Namesake and yet they have barely interacted. :D

You guys are on to me, or something.

This image isn’t really official. Not part of the comic. Just a little doodle. Might potentially become a wallpaper.

Emma looks pretty badass with a sword, no?
