Because some people really do pick at random. And the table for kids is the last table. And they always pick from the front tables.

Jeez louise.

On another note, have everybody heard the news about the horrific DC reboot?

Starfire, we hardly knew ye.

In other comic book news, be sure to check Von Allan's Stargazer and this awesome webcomic called Plume. I do love them so :D

*sigh* Unfortunately, a lot of people are still under the stereotype that comics are just made for kids. You would think they would at least glance inside to see the actual content. @_@

And poor Starfire, she deserves better treatment than she got in the reboot.

Okay, I just finished Plume and now am adding it to my reading list. XD In exchange, there's one that I started to ring, it might be a bit too shojo for you, but I find it amusing so far: http://www.genkigirl.com/wolvesandmen/

OH GOD STARFIRE WHY?

I'm glad you enjoyed plume, it is awesome and needs more readers! Thanks for the link!

The comics have an age rating of some sort, don't they? If not, you should let people know just what they are buying. Better to have happy parents and unscarred children than...the opposite. The trick is letting the parental units know without sounding condescending, but you'll hopefully have grateful parents afterward. So...yeah. Knowledge is power, and parents wih knowledge are a good thing.

It's the same with video games! Now they'll check your ID for mature-themed games.

Starfire, why do they do this to you? =(

They do, but unless it's manga, the rating is in the barcode and it's teeny tiny and hard to find.

They don't have any on French comics at all (we have our own system, divided by sections and tables with big signs that they don't read)

I'm honestly pretty nice to customers. But some parent's don't want your help, even if you were paying them to take it. There's some nasty people that come into our store. Thankfully, that's just 5%. The rest are okay and nice!

The only thing worse than clueless parents is clueless clerks. When I was about 14, anime was really popular (thanks to Pokemon) and my video store put all cartoons in the same section. So stuff like Ghost in the Shell sat next to Care Bears and Disney movies. And I ended up accidentally renting some really awful fan-service anime because of that. >_<

I wanted to do a big ranty write-up about all the horrors going on in DC's reboot universe (you think Starfire was shafted? Poor Catwoman was turned into a brain-dead sexual predator!), but Meg beat me to it.

That web-comic you posted perfectly explains why DC failed BIG TIME with this reboot. This reboot was the perfect opportunity to recruit new fans and, more importantly, pique the interest of girls who have fond memories of DC cartoons but never wanted to dive into the comics because of all the continuity.

...But no. They instead decided to reinforce the old stereotype that superhero comics are a boys' club and that the boys who read them are all creepy losers who spend their days fapping in Mommy's basement. I honestly can't believe more male fans aren't pissed about this. These books don't exactly shine a positive light on them.

Yeah, it's why our bookstore hires "comic experts". Libraries and schools buy from us. We need to know our stuff and read EVERYTHING.

You know, maybe they should let more girls do these comic things. Just saying. I would draw an awesome Teen titan thing.

I would buy that book in a heartbeat!! ^_^
Normally, I'm against affirmative action. But I think DC is in desperate need of more female writers and artists. There's a reason that the only new book starring a woman that ISN'T universally hated right now is Batgirl (Gail Simone is awesome; but she can only do so much at once).

Honestly. I don't know what they are thinking. I think they are trying to go back to like... basics. But all it's creating in this day and age is softcore porn.

There's nothing wrong with an asexual hero, folks. There's nothing wrong with a sex-life either. But in both cases, you gotta do it right.

WORD!
After watching two shows with great potential die horribly because the writers sucked at writing romance; it would make me very happy to see a new show starring young characters that chooses NOT to incorporate awful romantic melodrama.
...and if they absolutely must have a romance, they need to hire someone who knows how relationships (and female brains) work.

Agreed. It's kinda why I'm happy I have someone to work with on Namesake. I can't write romance worth a damn, but i'm good at keeping characters in-character. So it's great teamwork.

The Starfire I knew from way back when wasn't the same as the one in the animated series -- but she was sure a lot better than the new one you described!

I read that blog, and that chick has some points, but a lot of them are a little overboard and silly. Comics are majorly controlled and read by the male populace, and when speaking of art, very male dominated. (You have likely seen this already) An artist is going to depict what they want to see on the page, and with comics becoming more adult, it's not surprising to see the female form is modeled in sexy poses the artist would want to see. On the other side, there are books like Anita Blake that showcases men in such a fashion. She acts so offended that men sexualize these characters, but women do it just as much when they have the reins. (Romance novels a million times over with more direct sexual encounters) Yes, some things need to be addressed (like having more men show cased for the women the way women would want to see them verse how men 'think' we want to see them) Either way, no one is ever going to be truly happy with what they get. :/

From: [identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com
I don't think the author of that article went overboard at all. She didn't object to the slutty outfits (chicks who read comics are used to those); just the fact that Starfire and Catwoman were characterized as bizarro, porn star versions of who they used to be. It's so over the top that most women can't even read those books without either laughing at how ridiculous it is or throwing the comics aside in disgust.

And the examples of men being sexualized are so few and far between that they really don't even count (who the hell even knows that Anita Blake comics EXIST?). Men in Superhero comics are drawn to look muscular because it makes them look powerful and it makes sense for a man who fights a lot to be buff. Women in superhero comics are drawn to look like skinny porn stars because it makes them easier for the target audience to masturbate to.

Date: 2011-10-04 09:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] spankingfemme.livejournal.com
All characters are indeed drawn from the male view point since the majority of artists in the comic genre are men and draw what they think is the picture of what looks good for both male and female anatomy (Strength being key for men to aspire to be as the females are 'porn star' sexy... and yes to masturbate to since we as a human race are led by our loins 80% of the time whether we want to believe it or not) I honestly can say I haven't read those reboots to know how out of character either of the two are acting, and I can see her being upset if the personality changed dramatically. That I can be on board with 100% As for more sexualized men, I'm in perfect agreement, but for that to happen, there has to be a higher market for it :/

Date: 2011-10-06 04:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com
There's a pretty big market for it already. There's a reason webcomics like "Chester 5000" are so popular. It's just that the market has no faith in the mainstream comic industry, mostly because of issues like this. Hence why manga and webcomics seem to be getting all the female readership.

Unfortunately it takes time for progress, and the main stream is always behind in that race. Hell, we were just discussing that the Western hemisphere has progressed so far through civilization yet gay marriage is still so taboo? :/

I think the main problem, to me, wasn't how sexist it was (even though, yeah, sexist = bleh), but mostly because it's sexist in a useless way that destroys the character's original persona. In all the versions of Starfire created, she would never speak this way. I'm telling creators, don't be sexist, but if you must be, at least do it in a way where the character's personality stays intact. It's as if someone wrote Wonder Woman as a shy ingenue. It doesn't make sense.

Indeed. It's not just disrespectful on a female point of view, it's disrespectful to the male fans too, those who want their heroes to do more then being sex toys.

I read that article! It's so well written. I don't think anyone could have said it better.
I have a list of the New DC 52 (I really want to buy a bunch when I get some cash, just cause I'm new to comics and want to see what I like) but with all this new info I'm getting on the net, I made sure to cross Red Hood and the Outlaws and Catwoman off my list -__-

I've been hearing a lot about the Starfire debacle. It's pretty disgusting. The Boyfriend told me DC finally responded to the fans' outrage over the change in her character by saying basically, "Make sure you look at the ratings on comics before you buy them." Like all they're saying is, we acknowledge that her character is nothing but porn now, kids aren't allowed to have good comic role models, we're really not trying to make characters for any reason other than jerkoff material. Sad.

This. This sound you hear? It's my heart breaking.

Superheroes are fucking AWESOME. Why would someone try to turn mainstream ones into nothing but porn? We want role models! Not jerking jerk jerkyness.

I hear people complain sadly about how European comics and Manga are going to take over and comics are going to die. This is why. Bad writers.

They'll also die because the Japanese and European comic industries do one big thing that the current crop of American superhero comics refuse to do: respect female readers and try to give them something they can fall in love with.

From: [identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com
Eeeh. The female respect isn't quite so big yet in manga and European mainstream, but you still have more female writers sneaking it in and people loving it, which is pretty awesome. It's still better then this though.

I love how people automatically think comics = kids. Yeah, no...

And I HATE what they did with Starfire!!! It makes no sense whatsoever!! I mean, they turned her from a sweet, if somewhat fanservicey alien fish out of water into a promiscuous slut. I mean, I have no issues with characters having healthy sex lives, just don't make that all they are.
