Ponies :D

Drew some stuff relating to My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic.

This week, I am basically a wet towel on the floor while i'm at home and a robot while at work. I only get a half-day off this week due to the fact that i'm trying to balance out school classes and that people at the bookstore need me to come in an extra day. So yeah. This week is going to be heavy. But next week is going to be easier, and mostly empty, so it's all good! Next week will be full of sleeping in late, I can tell you that! I also need to start reconnecting with people slowly. Every time I go hermit because of a project, I kinda stop chatting with people on the phone, in person and on the web. It's normal, considering the project takes up all my time, but I still feel like a jerk for ignoring people for a couple of weeks.

I still generally feel tired and depressed, but whatever, like the rest, it's going to pass. I kinda feel like I did after the university finals. Strange, familiar feeling this is. But pretty much all my stuff for TCAF is ready, Meg takes care of the book editing and I can slowly do commissions. Woo!

I may be overworking myself too much lately. I read a couple of my old entries and they pretty much all go "so tired, can't go on, what the heck?". Either i'm very whiny, or too much of a workaholic.

I really want to read something good with werewolves in it. Every book I seem to pick up on the theme is terrible. Any one knows some good ones?

I also picked up the graphic novel for "Friends with Boys" and it rocks. Got a copy as a birthday present for my Namesake partner in crime, Meg. Seriously guys, do yourself a favor and check out the online version. It's awesome.

Everybody I know is drawing pretty girls. I want to draw pretty girls too! PB and Marcelline for you all!

I saw this article quite recently, about someone being encouraged by an agent to eliminate the gay characters of her book so she can get them published. The agent even had the gull of telling her “if the book was very popular and sequels were demanded, (the character) could be revealed to be gay in later books, when readers were already invested in the series.”

WHAT.

Gay couples are not marketing ploys. They are not writing anomalies. Support homosexual literature, fanart and comics by writing, drawing, and publishing online and offline as much as possible. We do not back down.

In other annoying news, I am SO SO SO very tired of people that come up to us in the bookstore, ask us for advice on which comics to buy for their kids (while the kid is right there), have us pull out something that makes the kid happy and then have the parents check out the price and go "THIS MUCH for a comic? Something you'll read in two hours? We'll go get you a REAL book."

Or better yet "Manga is all boobs and violence."

Or my favorite "You should be ashamed of yourself, a fine lady like yourself reading comics. Honestly. Don't you want to get married and be a good wife?"

(Yeah, that last one is totally what the fuck).

OH WELL. Tomorrow is the Comiccon. That should help.

Oddities...

 Well damn.

I made this face a lot this week. And it's a face I keep for special occasions. First off, i'm annoyed with aspects of my job, mainly idiots calling. Second, I seem to be in a bit of a rut this week. I can't write a comic or an LJ post worth a damn. Third, holy flying macaroni Batman, what is the internet up to?

Blah blah fandomsecrets blah blah deviant art )
I won't quit deviant art (since I use it for work, among other things).

However, yesterday, me and [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  were considering advertising namesake on deviant art. Now? Not anymore. Not if we can avoid it.

So, if anyone knows good sites to advertise Namesake (either through project wonderful or not), please let us know! We appreciate all guidance and suggestions.

Also, have cool namesake drawings I designed for the banners to make you feel better.

Sorry for not drawing comics this week guys. I am really void of joke ideas.

Reason #1 why I love working on Namesake :

Yes, the Fairy-tale themed illustrations :D

I kinda missed drawing these. I took a giant break for a while. Fairy tales are awesome.

Today, I was looking for reference shots of various versions of Munchkinland and I discovered there's a wannabe-real-munchkinland in China.  No, really. It's a full village in China with nothing but dwarves who train to sing and dance and perform various tasks. They basically formed their own tourist attraction. And the images of this village are kinda mesmerizing.

At first I was all "cool!" and then I realized the horrible social implications around physically different people being forced, or feeling like they are forced, to go live in a place that turns them into a circus show. A high-quality circus show, but a circus show none the less. It's a bizarre situation that can be seen as good or bad depending on your angle (some of the artists seem to like being there, others think it's a symbol of abuse).

Still reminds me of what a real munchkinland might look like. And heck, I think a real munchkinland would have a lot of social abuse. Maybe not as much as in Wicked, but it does hurt to be at the bottom of the length chain.

Before everyone starts telling me in the comments - Yes, i'm aware that as much as birds are cute, they are nasty. I was afraid of getting near it and afraid that I would have to go to work with Owl scratchies or worse. I was very cautious. I only tried to pull on the plastic wrap because it looked loose, almost as if somebody had sandwich-wrapped the owl's wing. It was trying to get it off by scratching. I never would have tried if it looked stuck.  I wanted to help because the owl was in the park I cross everyday to go to work... and well kids start to play there EARLY. If the plastic looked stuck, I would have just continued to work and called animal control. I'm not silly or cruel to animals. Plus I love owls.

I was still afraid this one was going to kill me. Sweet Oz. I was scared. This counts as my courageous and good Samaritan action of the week as a double-combo.

In other news. I have no life. A combination of lack of hours, travels, general geekdom and  laziness after a day of work have made is so that my art-related-work is in a horrible bottleneck of badness. I'm pretty much turning into a hermit in the next few weeks to catch up. I'll tell you guys more about that in the next post, along with a bit of an explanation about life as a part-time artist.

For now, I am AMAZED, in a bad way, at Japan again. Apparently, the ideal size for a woman over there is a size 2. Anything beyond is considered fat. WHAAAAAAAAAT! I know that asian women are smaller but, WHAAAAT? This is apparently encouraging anorexia and suicide nowadays among our sisters of the island. I'm outraged. Whenever I feel shameful about my weight (a pitiful size 8 to 10) I just read some kind of tabloid. The pure outrage I feel towards these outrageous standards and unrealistic expectations boosts my confidence.

Ridiculous.

Lemme tell you that a size 10 character is a lot more fun to draw then a size 2. Curves are awesome.

EDIT : As mentioned in the comments, you should not encourage people to be incredibly thin or tell them to let it be and remain overweight. Feminism is not an excuse for laziness on unhealthiness. Perfection should be being healthy.

Really thin people don't exercise more then overweight ones. They usually try to do exercise to become thinner, and then discover that muscles actually take a lot of room. So the stop exercising, atrophying the muscles and stop eating to diminish the fat. So neither thin or fat people are necessarily healthy. What should be encourage is health, no matter what your "healthy weight" is. Because some people are naturally smaller and others bigger. And charts can determine that according to origin, diet, exercice routines and height.
