Been working on commissions today. Well, that and answering a large email pile. Most of my current commissions are original characters invented by the commissionee. It's kinda fun to do those. People always have long descriptions and references and stuff. And it's cool to think that everyone all have a special or several special characters they invented, close to their heart. Something to work on, to motivate them. Some turn into characters that they share with the world (Harry Potter was once someone's "OC"). Makes me think back to the time when Namesake was only happening in my head. I hope my art encourages them to create even more.

Plus everyone is always so stylish.

In other news, i've been reading two manga series, Monster and Fullmetal Alchemist. Unlike many people, I had never read the FMA manga in full (i'm a couple of books short) or seen the "brotherhood" anime in full. So, this is a fun experience. I already love everybody thanks to the books I did read and the first anime. Now that i'm reading the manga, I can see why they decide to make a second anime that follows the manga's story more closely.

It's not that the first anime was bad. In fact, it's pretty good. But it removes a lot of the really, really good things and original things the manga had. Heck, the second anime toned down a few of those things too. Among those things, there was Alphonse's turmoil. There was a bit of it in the first anime, but not as much as in the books. In the books, it's really all about Ed, Al and Winry. All three are the main characters, rather then just Ed. You see what all of them go thru, and realize how much it sucks to be Alphonse, stuck in an armour and unsure of his existence. The girls are a lot more respectable in the manga. The first anime (and the second one a bit too) tended to put girls "back in their place" as the "hero support team" rather then characters in their own right.

As much as I love manga and anime, I have accepted that a lot of it is very sexist, both in shonen and shojo. Girls do their girly thing. And it's fun to see a series that subverts that. I can see why people who had read the manga hated Winry in the first anime series. She looses a lot of her awesome. She gets "rectified". And that's a bit sad.

Either way, I still love all forms of the series. Though manga gets the first place. I need to buy them all.

Also, Edward's faces. Man. They always get a laugh out of me.

Welp. My stomach decided it was out to get me again, so i'm spending the evening on my couch instead of working. Oh well.

I worked on one of my presentations. This one is about the history of manga. It was actually quite interesting. Especially all the reading I had to do about Tezuka and the Year 24 group (aka father of manga and mothers of shojo manga). There's some people out there who were badass artists. I kinda wish I was the reincarnation of one of them, or something *laughs* Theses guys pretty much created all the motifs still used in manga and defined the type of paneling and shots used.

I downloaded the first episode of the new show "New Girl". It was free off itunes. I was curious. I still haven't watched it because... the commercials for it honestly scare me. The premise of the show seems to be "SHE'S A GIRL. THEY ARE BOYS. THIS WILL BE GLORIOUS AND HILARIOUS FOR THIS REASON ALONE. also, she's nerdy." This seems very.... weak? I guess it's a sitcom, I should not expect much, but since it's the type of marketing they went for, it amazes me that such a basic and kinda sexist premise still attracts so very much. I honestly hope the show is better then it's marketing.

For a commission, a couples asked me to draw them as Disney's Beauty and the Beast. I'm quite proud of this one!

Whew. Stuff is hard. Everything is busy as heck. I kinda fell really behind for the first time ever on my Namesake pages. I feel a little down about that. It feels like a small failure. But heh, it was bound to happen at least once.

In other news, I ate so much food this weekend. Went to a barbecue to my friend Fauve's house, and then at my mom's... I was overfed. But I got ice cream and kabob, so that rocks. Back at home now, kinda juggling several jobs at the present time. Link and I are slightly puzzled. It seems a part of our clothing has disappeared. He's missing a lot of underwear. I'm missing a couple of my nicer things. We think one of our washes might have gotten forgotten and grabbed. Le sigh. I liked those dresses!

I'm slowly working on some prints for Fanexpo. I'm trying to make a list of awesome ideas. :D I'll post the list up when i'm done composing it. I'm also using a couple of existing prints I have. I don't have much though... I need to finish more art *laughs*

One of the prints I started is this one. WONDERWOMAN... in an "art nouveau/Mucha" style. I love that wonderbooty.

I also finished a couple of commissions last week. Stuff that dragged for... way too long. It's why I never open then officially. I need to make sure I have TIME, otherwise I have trouble filling the orders. This piece was for a guy that really liked the Mario Bros movie from the 80's and my "Humanized Mario Monster" series. It's Princess daisy from the movie and the movie version of yoshi. I had to look up her dress and stuff, but it was fun. It turned out really cute!

Anywho. Gonna go to bed. Got work tomorrow. Got work everyday this week. Urgh.

A couple of weeks ago, I designed a wedding invitation for one of my best friends. I,m quite proud of the end result. Took a lot of sketching and a couple of versions to get to this :

Here's my second favorite version :

I did a bunch of sketches. It was cool to try to find a bunch of ways for a couple to hold each other. In this case, there was an eztra challenge because he groom is actually shorter then the bride, so all the really classic swoon poses can look a bit strange. I had a ton of fun with the sketching.

Lots and lots of wedding sketches )

As a couple of you may know, yesterday was a bit of a breakdown for me. I slept a lot today. I feel better. I feel like a bit of a wuss nowadays, because my patience is running thin and I seem to get easily annoyed with a lot of things that don't usually get to me. This was accented yesterday by me having some kind of life crisis and people telling me to get over it rather then being supportive or at least quiet while I flip out. I mean... Yeah. Life is hard I guess. Mine lacks a lot of direction. And it's starting to worry me. I mean, sometimes I feel like Sisyphus, rolling up my rock up that hill, and as soon as I feel like i'm actually moving forward, it rolls back down. I know i'm not the only person in this situation. I know I probably don't have as much right to complain as a lot of people. But I still bitch and moan once in a while. It actually helps. I've been bitching way too much lately I suppose. So... I'm sorry i'm disappointing people.

*sigh* watcha gonna do?

In a more positive note, there a launch for Jabberwocky this weekend in Montreal. It's on Saturday, June 4 · 4:00pm - 7:00pm at the "Cheval Blanc" ((809 Ontario Est, Montréal, QC H2L 1P1). come by and say hi! Get a cool book! We actually don't have a lot of Jabberwockies left (which is why I didn't do a "sell" post yet on here). But we should get some more reprinted soon.

Over and out!

Worked hard to finish an exhibit watercolor painting today. Almost done. I had to stop because after a while, I get really tired of doing all those little lines. So after 3 hours of little lines, I decided to advance on my commission work. I'm like 4 months behind for this commission. Gah. The next commission on the menu is [livejournal.com profile] bonemarch 's.

This one was a "How to train your dragon" commission, starring Ruffnut, Fishlegs and some purring Terrible Terrors. Aren't they just adorable?

Watched The Incredibles today while drawing. Yeah, I really want a Despicable Me/The Incredibles family crossover. Both groups of kids could go to the same school. It would be awesome.

I'm disappointed in the water system in my apartment. The water is never the right temperature. And sometimes it decides to randomly go warm, to burn you, for giggles, or something. It also tastes kinda funny. Not bad funny. The water is still drinkable. But it's got a little aftertaste. It tastes like stones or metal. I don't like it. I,m so used to the delicious water that I had back when I lived in Ottawa. curse you, old pipes!
