To celebrate the coming of two animated movies, The Princess and the Frog and Ponyo, who seem to have a similar theme (human falling in love with creature and creature falling in love with human and wishing to become human), I decided to draw fanart. But not ANY fanart. Oh no. Here is a list of Animated Beauties (both male and female) and their beasties.  Lo and Behold, the pretty and the cute!

Bell opens the ball of course, she's the best-known example.

Tohru honda and Kyo soma. so he's technically not a beast per se. But it's so cute.

Tiana and Naveen. Brand, Spankin' new disney buddies.

Lucy and Aslan. They count as animated! There was an animation back in the 80's of Narnia (but it made even less sence then the Lord of the rings one.)... also, the lion counts as animated in the new movie XD

Lois and Brian from Family Guy. Because I like Brian and Stewie.

Liz and Hellboy. One of my favorites.

King Kong and his...ckicklet. Plenty of animated versions of those two. also, again, the newer version = lots of animation for the monkey at least.

Jessica and Roger Rabbit. God I loved that movie. "She's not bad. She's just drawn that way"

Frodo and Gollumm. What? I never said all the Beauties would be GIRLS. Also, I know they aren't lovers but they do have an close relationship (in the "I know i'm going to turn out like you and it makes me feel like I should take care of you" sense.)

Shrek and Fiona. Human Fiona is GORGEOUS.

Another Disney girl (Disney sure likes this theme): Eliza Maza and Goliath. I read the spoilers. I know they smootch.

Chihiro and Haku. Because you aren't loved until you are loved by a rivergod.

Ariel and Eric. I'm sorry, but before she turns into a human, I think this counts as an inter-species relationship. I mean...She's not a mammal since she doesn't require going up for air. Gills = lays eggs for babies = no vagina = other species = counts here.

April and the turtles. I think ninja turtles is the first time I ever though as a child " Wait a minute....isn't weird for a chick to hang out in dark alleys and sewers?"

Last but not least, Alicia Masters and the Thing from the Fantastic Four. Now, I know in the last movie, Alicia was black, but in all honesty, I hated those movies. A lot. And I loved her design from the 50's.

Missing from the list: Storm/Nightcrawler - The characters from Ponyo - Sophie/Bird!Howl - Fakir/Ahiru

This was really fun to draw. I want to color them all and put them on deviant art.

I strongly encourage everyone to go see Ponyo and The Princess and the Frog. The movies look really good (or at least visually stimulating) and both are distributed by Disney. This is basically Disney, testing his ground. Even though they now can match Pixar on the technical level in 3D animation, they know that 3D animation is Pixar's domain. They also know that traditional animation is seen as their domain... they have been gradually returning to traditional animation, testing the audience (namely with Enchanted.) The Frog Princess is them seeing if it's worth (on a $ squale) returning to traditional animation on a regular one-movie-every-three-years basis. So please, go see it in theatres. Disney apparently needs a big box-office blowout to convince themselves to re-hire their animators. It sucks, but Disney is first and foremost a business. But they offer a quality product, so why not give them a reason to make it?

Ponyo comes out in theatres here on August 14 and The Princess and the Frog on December 11.

(Did anybody else noticed that Disney used the same font as Nemo for the title of Ponyo?)

That is the most adorable Frodo I have ever seen. Seriously, I just want to squeeze him.

And I'm kind of excited for The Princess and the Frog. I feel like I shouldn't be, but it's just so hard not to squee from excitement.

Oh, and here's a Toph, like you wanted. *points to icon*

There was an animated version of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe done back in....gosh, the 70s? It was animated by the same group that animated the Snoopy cartoons. I grew up watching that and loved it, plus, it made me cry (when Aslan is sacrificed on the Stone Table of course) so you know what that means.

These are beyond awesome. I imagine these will be a huge hit if you color them up and slap them on Deviantart. ^_- (And I still need to scan an image from the new Gargoyles comic. I think you'd get a kick out of it. And no, not the smooch between Elisa and Goliath.)

I liked the Narnia animation better then the disney movie, though I have admit I don't like Narnia much to start off with. I mean, I know it's a religious metaphore, but people basically get screwed around and then wait for the lion to save them, then usually get someone killed. Talk about a passive-agressive religion.

It's not quite like you think it it. Yes, it is a huge metaphor, essentially the story of Jesus Christ but with a big spin on it. The White Witch is of course representative of Satan, down to how she makes people believe she is a kindly person so that she can ensnare them and cause them to do her bidding. If you read the whole series it's pretty interesting how humans (sons of Adam and daughters of Eve) were there at the start of Narnia's creation, but over time they died out, but there'd been a prophesy that these very people would be the saviors of Narnia. Aslan is Jesus, and like Jesus himself, he will not do anything for you that you can do for yourself. The real lesson to be had from the Bible and Narnia itself is that you have to do everything in your power (and even then, be good about it, don't achieve your goals through underhanded means) and then the higher power will help get you to where you ought to be.

In any case, Aslan dying to save Edmund is a simpler version of why Jesus was crucified, but the reason for it being there is just as strong. And since the White Witch is the Satan of the story, she has to go for there to be peace in Narnia - just as it's prophesied that Satan will be conquered in the last days, after a horrible war.

So...yeah, the stories are overall more enjoyable if you know where they came from (C.S. Lewis made it no secret he read the Bible), but they really are presented in such a way that even non-Christians can enjoy the stories for what they are. I'm personally glad nothing was sugar-coated in the stories.

F4 was PAINFUL. They really ruined it. And I hated Jessica Alba in it even though I liked her in Dark Angel.

Those cartoons are full of awesome.

You know, I'm really happy that Disney got off their butts are not only produced another animated film, but also animated the princess involved as a black woman. I love that. It's been way too long, and it should have been done MUCH sooner!

The black princess is an issue. Even in this day and age where you think people would assume Disney would make a non-racist film, you still have a few black and ethnic groups who flip a cow for every detail. I mean, I can understand why they were mad when the character was first pitched as a maid, but now that she's a princess you still have groups nitpicking at things like that fact that the Prince's voice actor is latino instead of black, that the princesse's rich (white) friend takes too much space, that the setting for the story is new Orleans, and because of the tragedy that happened there this is in bad taste... You know, they pick voice actors for their talent. And we can't avoid new Orleans' rich cultural setting forever. And cinderella was a maid!

As much as I understand etnic groups being nitpicky about this, for chris' sake, if you want more color heroines, you can't scare the studios out of using them either!

Um, yeah. That IS pretty scary. I had no idea people were being so damned anal about it...That sort of hurts my head!

I mean, I'm still glad, but hearing that people are still MAD about it?! Why don't they just write their own screenplay?

They probably have. I admit there is still a lot of racism and discrimination in Hollywood (cough cough avatar cough cough) but I think for the Princess and the Frog, disney was actually careful. I mean, Mulan is ethnic and she kicks ass. I think people need to relax a little. At this point it's getting ridiculous. Removing the twin towers out of backgrounds with photoshop type of crazy (anybody else though that was weird? Like they expected someone to break down crying when they see spiderman zooming past it. I think they just wanted to avoid *emotional scarring* lawsuits.)

Avatar is racist o.O;?

People do need to relax, like, ALOT.

I always thought they removed the WTC so that it would be relevant to the time it was aired.

(I believe that Isa is referring to the fact that for the live action movie version of Avatar, they cast white actors to play Aang, Katara and Sokka. Also, originally they were planning on having Jesse McCartney play Zuko, but due to problems with his schedule they got Dev Patel to play Zuko instead.)

It's not that Disney didn't want to make traditionally animated movies. Eisner (previous president of Disney) decided there was no profit in making them anymore. He gave them the axe, despite so many skilled artists at Disney wanting to continue them. Some of those animators (like James Baxter) even left to form their own animation studios (you saw their work in the animated portions of Enchanted and Kung Fu Panda), others went off to teach at schools (like DigiPen), while a few did stick around at Disney. Once Eisner got ousted, the new president patched up relations with Pixar (remember, Disney and Pixar had a major falling out and Disney nearly lost its partnership with the smaller company), John Lasseter became more influential in what happened at Disney and was a major contender in getting Disney to refocus on its roots.

The best thing you can do to make sure Disney doesn't again decide that traditional animation is profitless is to support them by seeing the movies when they come out. Tell your friends to see them if you like them. Don't be like my mom and lament the fate of traditionally animated movies while refusing to see any of the current traditionally animated movies. :P

Oh, I know. I also know that they would be foolish to not use CGI and CGA for their movies. I just have always had a soft spot for 2D, so it's a nice nostalgia trip to see them indulging in it again.

I'm dying to see both movies, but I don't know if Ponyo is coming to my theater. When Howl's Moving Castle came out, it was only playing in Moncton, which is an hour and half drive from where I live. (I've been checking, but they haven't listed it yet.) So, for Ponyo, I might have to wait for DVD.

Here's hoping that these movies will led Disney into doing more 2D animation movies.

I love the chibis. Eliza, Belle, Tohru and Lucy are my favorites. ^_^

Ditto as someone planning to see The Frog and the Princess in theaters. I'll do my best to catch Ponyo if there's any subtitled showings in Phoenix.
