The Lina/Gourry manga by Rui Araizumi was just fine as far as translations go, but the rest... For the rest they tried a little too hard localizing it to English, and even then not to a broad English-speaking audience. It ought to tell you something that I have the German manga for the 'main' storyline and I like it a great deal more than the English since it was more true to the original Japanese. The Premium adaptation was just painful.

I still think Aqualord is the best of the manga series. The series by Shoko Yoshinaka was just a retreading of the anime and novels it is based on, with slight variation. I prefer the anime and the novels covering the same plot by far. The Slayers Special manga by Tommy Otsuka has great art, but it's like the OAVs and movies where we get episodes of the exploits of Lina and Naga. Nothing really deep to it. The L/G manga by Rui Araizumi has great art, but unless you're a diehard L/G fan you probably wouldn't have much interest in it. Aqualord is an original series you'll not find anywhere else, has original characters that are actually likable, and the artwork (again by Tommy Otsuka) is amazing. It's kind of weird for a while as his style transitions from a more toonish style to more stylized, but by the end I had no qualms with it.
