Hummm... What?
Sep. 7th, 2008 11:59 pmMan, even working at Tim Hortons I never got yelled at by customers as i'm getting yelled at the bookstore. Parents are insane, as my past jobs have already confirmed. They want everything right away, exactly as needed, or else.
Today, a weird lady sent her ex to buy her kid's book. We had set aside schoolbooks under her name. The ex did not give us her name, he gave his, so thinking he didn't have an order ready, we could only give him half of the books he needed since we had to order the other half. The missing books being readily available in the lady's order, she obviously blew a fuse, thinking we were obviously evil and trying to prevent her children from learning or something. She called the store, called us several bad things, told us we should be (and I quote) "better informed" and that we "lacked communication"... I felt like telling her she should have communicated better with her ex-husband, because when we asked (several times) if the order could be under another name he said "no" and didn't even know his kid's grade. The conversation ended with the lady telling my coworker to "fuck off". Wonderful. Just wonderful. we told her she wasn't allowed to talk to us that way. She said she was allowed to talk to us however she wished because she was a customer.
Seriously, I have gotten yelled at at least once per shift since I started. What is wrong with people? I feel terrible for my coworkers who have all cried at least once during the back to school craze. Apparently, the customers who come to buy novels and those who come to buy textbooks are totally different and treat you with a whole other type of respect.
This last treck in the world of retail makes me giddy to start my new job. I'm amazed by how little respect we get from people while we are seriously trying to help them in the world of retail. I mean, I got more respect out of people when I was serving them cheap coffee!
In other news, my contract stuff is going well. I just finished a comic for a fan magazine. It's five pages and textless. I think it looks awesome. I really love working with black and white. The idea behind it was to match a story with a painting. The painting I chose showed a city with a tree formed from hands. Check the result:
