Man, even working at Tim Hortons I never got yelled at by customers as i'm getting yelled at the bookstore. Parents are insane, as my past jobs have already confirmed. They want everything right away, exactly as needed, or else.

Today, a weird lady sent her ex to buy her kid's book. We had set aside schoolbooks under her name. The ex did not give us her name, he gave his, so thinking he didn't have an order ready, we could only give him half of the books he needed since we had to order the other half. The missing books being readily available in the lady's order, she obviously blew a fuse, thinking we were obviously evil and trying to prevent her children from learning or something. She called the store, called us several bad things, told us we should be (and I quote) "better informed" and that we "lacked communication"... I felt like telling her she should have communicated better with her ex-husband, because when we asked (several times) if the order could be under another name he said "no" and didn't even know his kid's grade. The conversation ended with the lady telling my coworker to "fuck off". Wonderful. Just wonderful. we told her she wasn't allowed to talk to us that way. She said she was allowed to talk to us however she wished because she was a customer.

Seriously, I have gotten yelled at at least once per shift since I started. What is wrong with people? I feel terrible for my coworkers who have all cried at least once during the back to school craze. Apparently, the customers who come to buy novels and those who come to buy textbooks are totally different and treat you with a whole other type of respect.

This last treck in the world of retail makes me giddy to start my new job. I'm amazed by how little respect we get from people while we are seriously trying to help them in the world of retail. I mean, I got more respect out of people when I was serving them cheap coffee!

In other news, my contract stuff is going well. I just finished a comic for a fan magazine. It's five pages and textless. I think it looks awesome. I really love working with black and white. The idea behind it was to match a story with a painting. The painting I chose showed a city with a tree formed from hands. Check the result:

Oh wow!

Along with the composition, pacing, textures and... well, everything! ... her cute little nose has opened doors in my head to new realms of cartooning.

I honestly have to say that this is some of your best work, Isa. The building she lives in reminds me a lot of the one we were discussing to use with Emma. What's the fan magazine that you're submitting your work to?

*grumbles with you regarding retail*

We used to get calls like that about our news stories, with about the same vitriol.

Yeah, i,m totally going with this new extra detailled style right now, i'm addicted! I don't remember the name of the fanmagazine, but a friend is the editor, so i,m sure to get a copy or two.

Now do you understand why I don't miss the bookstore? People yelled at me ALL THE TIME. I haven't been yelled at yet, here, so I may change my mind, but still. Every day I would have someone bitch at me at Coles, but here? So far, twice a week.

I like the art style of this one. Almost childlike.

Usually, at the bookstore it's pretty quiet. The place I work at is a tiny, independant business. We usually get the quieter, well-read people and never got yelled at, specifically because all the asses went to the big bookstores like coles. But right now, we are getting those people and man would I have hated coles...

Yuck, retail, exactly why I don't want to return to it. You'll always have a few cool customers, but then you get those who have to have it RIGHT NOW and don't understand logic at all. That whole order sounds like the lady doesn't communicate hardly at all to her ex-husband. You would think he would realize that he hadn't made the order, so why on earth would it be under his name? :P We'd sometimes get orders like that back at the bakery, but thankfully logic usually kicked in for the person before things got too confusing.

But seriously, whoever coined the phrase, "The customer is always right!" needs to be booted out into the street. I'm all for being nice to customers, but when they treat you like garbage, that is not okay!

..the comic has me wanting to hug a tree now. (Hurray for tree huggers!) Would you kill me if I said her nose reminds of of Olive Oyl's? I really like how she looks really simple (her face especially), but then really complicated/detailed at the same time (her hair and dress).

Now I wish I had a graphic novel to read...

I think the worse place I worked at for customers was in the tourist market in Ottawa...

I think the customer is not always right. The customer is untitled to express his feelings and be understood, but he ain't no king.

I wasn't thinking about Olive when I deigned the character, but it does fit!

This is why I don't want to work in retail for the rest of my life. I remember when we had to blow up balloons at the store, and there were always people who wanted the balloons now even if there were a few balloons orders before theirs. *sigh*.

I love the comic. The line art is beautiful and the view points are nice too. I really like the style of this one.

The weirdest thing about people in line is how impatient they are. When i,m serving a customer, ifI move slightly away from the one i'm serving, the next three people start aking me stuff. O_O;;;

and thank you my dear! :)

Curse asshole parent and Bless your art

Hey there.

I hope the job thing at the library gets better soon. But at worst, only 14 more days till you start your new job, Wouhou!

Your 5 page comic is amazing. Definately some of your best work.

You were always very strong with the pure black and white drawings, and this is a great example to prove it.

One tiny little thing, I noticed that her nose, perfectly from the side, seems a little pointed. Where her nose from any other angle seems pretty round.

Ahh whatever. It's gorgeous.

Good job.

Stupid customer. While the idea of working in a bookstore (books!)sounds nice, it's the people you'd have to deal with on a day to day basis that scares me!

Cool drawing!!
