Sometimes you just can't draw.

Which is okay right now  guess. I'm finished all my drawings for class and i'm building them frames. Al I really have to do is write essays and study for my exams, so nothing artistic there.

Miracle! In my town's cinema, they played a great movie: Persepolis, that i've been dying to see! The movie is the story of a young iran girl growing up thru the war of 1980. It's animated, and the animation is just great! It's an odd movie. It's french, and it's got that sad but humorous quality french movies have. The story is sometimes so sad and terrible, yet the heroine Marji brings a certain amount of color (and colorful language) to this black and white film. It's based on a comic of the same name, a definite must-read. Don't let the simple drawings fool you, this thing is a pearl.

Hey, check out this youtube extract of one of my favorite scenes. Marji decides to take her life into her hands despite social pressure and goes to university for the first time while starting a job as a aerobics teacher. She likes "Eye of the tiger."

*laughs*

This extract is completly in french, which sucks for all of those who won't get it, but the animation kicks ass! Basically, she falls in love with an ass and only realises it later.

Persepolis exists in english too, both the film and the comic, so check it out!

Aside from that, did I turn ugly overnight or what? I'm trying to buy clothing and it seems nothing fits me nicely. Is it just this year's fashion and me who aren't compatible? Is it the extra weight? One things for sure, the new hairdo is in for something because yes, for the first time in 6 years, i'm back to my natural color. The orange is gone, and i'm black again. My hair is black and short.

I kinda hate it. I was wondering why I kept dying my hair orange. Now I remember. Meh.
Back to marketing...

*snickers at clips*

So was he always ugly and in her love struck mind she pictured him as... not?

My town doesn't show all the nice arty films, just the major ones. I had to go to the next town over just to watch Howl's Moving Castle!!

Are you gonna post pictures of your "new" hair? I've always liked dark hair for some reason. Almost all of my OC's have black hair.

Yes, I purposly used black-haired Howl... *wink*

Nawww, the guy always looked good. She's basically re-telling the story to herself making him seem like a giagantic ass. Then again, he was never that great, but when a guy cheats on ya, it's a horror film when you play it back in your brain.

A few people asked pictures of the new hair. I don't really feel like putting it up though, I find it atrocious. It's too black and too short. The hairdresser did a nice job on me, I just don't like it. Can't wait for it to grow...

That makes sense.

I understand. I've had a few bad haircuts myself and didn't want them documented for the world to see.

I had purchased the books as soon as they came out, having lived in the Middle East at the time of the Iranian revolution and having an Iranian friend. Both my husband and I were eager to see the movie and went as soon as we could. The horror of repression in her own country and alienation in a foreign land she had to live with doesn't make this a comfortably funny movie, but the humor is all the more impressive. She is a survivor. The Eye of the Tiger was definitely one of the funniest sequences.

Aren't you glad your art classes weren't like hers?

I find the movie had a lot more humor then the comics. Actually I found the movie very "french" because french people have a way of making sad things and humorous things dance together in a way that is suprisingly tasteful! But persepolis is awesome. I keep nagging everyone to read it.

Gah! The art class segment always got to me. It reminded me of old europ, when female artist weren't allowed to see models at all, clothed or not and then only clothed. It's absurd! You can't learn anything about the human body that way! I think i'd die taking art classes in Iran. I love drawing the human body. i'd die without source material. Unfortunatly, the ottawa U nudes aren't that great (it's always the same people and there's only one guy in the bunch...or maybe i'm just unlucky and I always get the same people) so I found a few online websites that offer source material nudes for artists. I also use a few animation site source materials and soft core porn imagery (aka girl stands around looking naked. No actual screwing in my images. thanks.) It's so helpful to get movement down, and god knows I love to draw movement!

She stuck fairly close to her books in the movie. I was sorry she left out the short hair cut though. It showed how very rebellious and denying her roots she got in Europe. Guess the longer hair was easier to keep up in animation.
