I seriously have a short temper lately, and I apologize for whomever is at the receiving end of it. I think the weather, multiple flues and sheer job annoyances are slowly reducing my patience in this fine powder-like substance. Grrrr. Oh well.

Today, I managed to get many of my "obligations" out of the way early, so I got to sketch a bit for fun, which happens rarely these days, unfortunately. So I drew sketches about "Labyrinth", that I had watched a few days earlier.

I love that movie and it's it's 80's glorious Bowie-themed cheesiness. Link hates it. He calls it "that creepy children's movies from our childhood" *laughs*. He probably feels this way because he's not a girl, since mostly girls seem to have liked this movie for some reason (some reason other then the contents of Jareth pants, in my case). Too bad this story is still copyrighted, Sara fits the "Namesake" description to a T. Oh well. I'd still like to get my hands on the book that was the inspiration for this movie, "Outside Over There" by Maurice Sendak. I love Sendak's drawings and dark humor. I didn't manage to get my hands on one of his artbooks yet. I wonder what tools he used to draw...

Speaking of awesome drawings, an artist I strongly admire on deviant art just finished her animated movie. She studies at a school called "Gobelin" in France, which is basically one of the best, if not the best school for animation out there. And it show. Click on the image to see her beautiful film. and be sure to check out her deviant art too.

That's all for now, folks!

How does he feel about Dark Crystal? Most of my guy friends seem to prefer that one, but Dark Crystal was the 80s childhood movie that scared me. Labyrinth scared me a bit, but I loved all of the main characters even then, so I got over it.

I still don't understand the attraction to Jareth/David Bowie though.

I didn't even see Labyrinth until I was at "A" school last year and an instructor loaned me her DVD copy.

So I watched it...and I was 'meh' about it. Not gonna lie, I love The Dark Crystal way more, even if some parts of it did frighten me. XD

Also didn't have a clue who David Bowie was. XD

Checking her film and DA! She must be lucky to be attending one of the best animation schools! :OO

I don't think he's seen Dark Crystal. That, or he's traumatized to a point where he erased evil muppets from his brain *laughs*

I like Dark Crystal myself.

I was already a responsible adult with a job and a fully paid car when Labyrinth came out in the movie houses. I liked it because of the mix of Muppets and music. I thought it was so good that I wanted to share it. I went to see my cousin Claude, borrowed his two young sons and drove them over to another showing, in French this time. As little children go they were two very articulate, very outspoken individuals. But they were absolutely silent during the whole movie. They were totally mesmerized by it.

About twenty years later I borowed the DVD from a libary and I found that the movie had aged badly, for my tastes. The imagery was still good though, and there were a lot of fully "intact" pieces in it. The spirit was there even if this time around I found the execution to be too slow at times.

That's why I enjoyed your color sketch so much. It fits so well the spirit of the movie.

Also, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the movie but I didn't know at all that it was inspired by a Sendak book.

This movie would deserve a badass remake, but nobody can really top Bowie.

Oh, your Labyrinth art is particularly wonderful! I love how you've made Jareth look actually goblin-ish!

Yeah, that was always the thing that bugged me about the movie as a kid. why did the Goblin King look so human?

It's just one of those movies that girls love more than guys, which I think is fair since there are also movies guys enjoy more than girls. ^_~

I actually read that book back in high school, my graphic arts teacher had a copy of it. I would probably buy it if I ever saw it in stores, although the big difference is that in the book it's a little sister, not a little brother.

Oooh! I only connected "Outside Over There" with "Labyrinth" in passing! I didn't know they were really related! Your pictures are lovely, as usual. :)

Aaaw, thanks!

It's part of the inspirations for the movie it seems. But the directors admitted this fairly recently.

What a lovely short film.

Heh, yeah. The Labyrinth is very much an 80's girls' film. But there are elements of it that we enjoy even as adults. Namely how Sarah actually grows up by the end and stands up to Jareth (note how she stops saying "it's not fair" after he highlights she keeps saying it. That is something big).

Mmmmmmm, Jarith. And yes, I used the wrong name when I commented on dA because I am SPECIAL...

Sorry you've been in a crabby mood. we all get that way once in awhile. No worries.

And I had no idea 'Labyrinth' was based on a book! Good to know.
