Aftershock...

I'm a little annoyed at the people around me who are giving me crap for not putting my life on pause because of Japan. Yes, it's a tragedy. Yes, you should pause, reflect, inform and donate (I did all those things). But if you are lucky enough to be able to have a normal day, then enjoy and be thankful for it. The people in trouble don't have that luxury. Don't ignore a problem, but don't freeze-frame everything for it. Especially if you ignore all the other political and natural disasters. Stay informed, feel concerned, but don't give people crap over it, jeez.
Anyways. Thanks to everyone on my f-list who was kind enough to donate for Japan and New Zealand. You peeps are fantastic.
In case you are all wondering, there's an online community where you can auction for fanworks. All profit goes to help the countries shook by the earthquake.

Date: 2011-03-12 09:12 pm (UTC)I can't believe anyone would give you crap for not curling into a ball and sobbing 24/7 because of what's happening in Japan! If I fell apart every time I saw something depressing on the news, I'd be dead within a week! O_o

Their ideas and motivations bother me. Even their motivation to help is so self-centered.

Date: 2011-03-12 09:57 pm (UTC)In any case, I guess I'm not getting at all worked up about his at all. Earthquakes happen. Tsunamis happen. Both in Japan and on this side of the ocean, we have developed precautions to prevent mass damage and loss of life. Nothing is ever foolproof, but it's not the end of the world when this sort of thing happens. Japan is a strong nation. It will be quick to pick up the pieces and rebuild, making itself even better for when future earthquakes strike.
...and I guess I feel totally at peace about it all since I donate all the time, so my money was already prepped and ready to assist the moment something like his happened.
Go out and enjoy your day. Enjoy the fact that you can have a normal day. I'm sure there are many even in Japan doing the same. The moment work stops, recovery is halted.

Date: 2011-03-13 06:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, I try to donate to help organizations regularly, as much as I can anyways, since i,m not rolling in cash myself. Last year friends made a donation on my behalf on my birthday to an organization that helps preserve endangered birds. It made me really happy. It was sweet. They know I love birds.

Date: 2011-03-12 10:34 pm (UTC)Your dream, though I'm sure was unsettling, is absolutely beautiful. Makes me think of the video for Baths' "Lovely Bloodflow" and something a friend said about it, that she's always thought those who die alone are witness to something very special. Which is a nice idea.

Date: 2011-03-13 06:45 pm (UTC)There's always some kind of twisted beauty in death, blood and destruction. Maybe it's the unknown, maybe it's the whole twisting of images that we are used to. I'm not sure. But yeah, dreams like this are strange and beautiful.

Date: 2011-03-13 03:06 am (UTC)I have a couple of friends who live right next to the coast farther south, but luckily they were just fine. It was incredibly scary not knowing how they were for a while, though, and I can only imagine how horrible it must be for other people and their families closer to the disaster.

this is SUCH a FIRST WORLD PROBLEM. It's like "my life is so good I should worry about other people because it's the right thing to do or I might seem insensitive."
I feel bad about Japan, much more so than with New Zealand, Australia* and even Haiti**, but that's because I've been closer to Japan than those other countries. Still, I'm living my life. I haven't donated yet, but I will.
* I know it was a tragedy. I know it was horrible. I know people died and lost their homes. Yet, I can't stop seeing them as firt world countries who have enough money to put themselves back up together (see next point).
** Meanwhile, Haiti is the poorest country in Latin America, and people seem to have forgotten about that fact. They can't build up. They're a poor country. People can't donate to every single country that's in trouble, because there are some that need it more than others. IMO.
