Yay, McIntosh season! The delicious red-and-green kind. Not the white technological kind.

I'm addicted to McIntosh apples. Whenever the season rolls in, Isa is all like "Om nom nom appples apples apples pie apples"
Unfortunately for me, I have a wound in my mouth is seems. I'm not sure what it is. It's rather painful and looks like a zit, but on the gums. According to Link, it's really common. I've never had something like that, but he seems to have gotten a lot. He told me to rince my mouth with salt water 4 or so times a day. When I first did that, it hurted like hell, but now the pain is going down, so I guess it's working. Or my jaw is being zombified.

So yeah. Put a little damper in my entousiasm since apple acid + mouth wound = ouchies. Still, APPLES. Yaaaaay. *Is excited for the silliest things*

In other news, Terry Pratchet rocks my socks. He's channelling his inner-Sokka by getting himself a shiny meteorite sword.
Pratchet, stop making me jealous of not being you.

Finally, about NSFW (Not safe for work - aka sexy - art) :

[livejournal.com profile] torreadora  is an amazing artist (some of you may know her from bri_chan's Alice/Hatter fame). She took down a few more risqué pieces of artwork from her deviant art because she was tired of the rude commentaries. This kinda makes me angry. Her art is beautiful, and no more "offensive" then a lot of other stuff i've seen on that website (Heck, i've seen "stock photos" that were basically porn and Yaoi images that were in about the same poses!!).

Another friend of mine had posted a while back a really beautiful "How to Train your Dragon" fanart. The fanart showed Hiccup and Astrid nuzzling (as in "rubbing noses") while being partially covered by a fur-carpet-thing. It was implied pretty clearly that the characters were in the nude. But it was not sexualized. It was a really soft and cute piece. The art piece got tagged as offensive by a few deviants and eventually the friend was banned.

It's weird. That friend, and torreadora, seem to be getting this not because of the contente itself, but because they are using copyrighted characters (Disney and Dreamworks).  As much as I get that some people may find their childhood menaced by this, the work of both these artists was far from tasteless. The art itself was gorgeous, and even the very sexualized pieces had a feel of "nice" and "loving" and were drawn in good taste. I've seen artwork on deviant art showing the same characters in more "depraved" settings (read : rape art) and nobody says a thing.  I think these two artist were aimed at because of the quality of the drawing. They have proportions and expressions down to a t. It looked realistic and was therefore menacing, Or something. I don't even know.

This kinda just confirms something i've always disliked about Deviant art. Don't use it to determine your quality as an artist.
A lot of bad artists get a lot of favorites and a lot of good art gets pinned as awful or ignored. I say there's nothing bad about something a bit risqué, especially when it's done in good taste. When you can truly feel the love poured in the work and the love between the characters.

[livejournal.com profile] torreadora , please ignore the silly people. You rock my socks too. Just like Terry Pratchet. You make me want to draw characters in corsets.

To focus on the first part:

Funny you should mention that - my grandparents own a small apple orchard. They sell quite a few types - I can't recall the full list, but the most popular are Lobos, Honey Golds, Cortlands...

...and McIntosh apples. Suffice to say, if you want some...

You make me feel guilty for always despising apple picking. I don't think we have any McIntosh apples, but I'm looking forward to the Jonagolds! (Or however you spell it. They're cross-bred between Johnathons and Golden Delicious apples.) Baked goods made from apples are so good. Downright North American, too! :D

Sounds like you got a cold sore, although in my family we call them canker sores. I tend to get them a lot since sharp teeth + soft flesh is not a good combination. Really, any sort of scratch or sore spot in your mouth will become a canker sore, so take care when you eat. And maybe, just maybe, the apples had too much acid for your mouth to survive that assault of deliciousness. ^_-

I'd not be surprised if people who reported the artists were either jealous of the talent, or thought they had somehow copied legit art. (Legit nude Disney art? Really? Who broke into an animator's private sketches?!) My sister never drew nude art back in the day, but she always got reported for copying art when she was drawing original characters in the Sonic art style. It was really silly... And people are silly... I don't make it a point to seek out such artwork myself, tasteless or not, but I'd never report such people, either. Why discipline an artist for being talented?

People are silly. Darn people!

Too bad we can't go apple picking as a group. I bet it would be more fun then.

Hmm... Maybe. Then again, it might be the cause of the second Great Apple War. Apples make for good projectiles. True story. (And the first Great Apple War was waged between my older brother and his friend out in the orchard. Unripe fallen apples sting!)

Would the apple war be greater then the epic snowball fight of yore?

I would have to say yes, but only because apples are more common here than snow! ^_- (Snow is so rare that whenever we did get snow, we made epic snow forts instead since it seemed a waste to throw the snow!)

Isa babe, you're a doll. :) Thanks for the love. And yeah, there's a crazy double standard on DA... Things only get deleted if they get reported, and the more attention something gets, the more likely it is to be reported. I've seen things that were so far over the line, but nobody says a thing because it's not seeing by like ten thousand people a day. Which is fine -- I have zero problem with mature art. I guess I wish the people would mature a little bit, you know? :D

Oh my God, I feel your apple love. That's something I miss about living in Ohio. Every fall, the fruits and veggies made me fall in love. Whither goest thou, Pumpkin Patch?

You deserve the love! You're so awesome. If I owned characters, i'd let you draw them however you want and not complain! *laughs*

People definitely need to mature. Bad, people, bad!

I can't wait for clementine season too. Oh fruits, the candy from the forest! :D

Popping in to say I love your stuff! Keep on drawing what you feel inspired to draw, regardless of what others say.

Mmmm... McIntosh... ^^ I like Gala too - not too sweet, not too tart. They both seem like a good balance of everything good in apples. Have you ever had a Grapple? They're a little sweet - and a little expensive because they're genetically engineered, but they're really interesting.

Grr... the art issue makes me vicariously angry. Once and a while, there are ridiculously blatant pics on DA that have little or no artistic value. What you described is nothing compared to some of them. Unfortunately, if it's a fanart tagged for copyright issues there's nothing that can be done - but realistically, DA should realize if they're going to take works down for that issue, they would end up losing 90% of their library.

Never had a grapple. But now I wanna!

I hate people who tag stuff for copyright issues because they hate something about it. It's like...hypocrite much!?

They're probably the primary reason that I have such a bizarre sense of humor. Reading Pratchett in middle school left me a happily twisted girl. ^_^

Sadly I'm allergic to fruits (not deathly so to apples, but enough that the allergic reaction I have turns me off) so I can't appreciate all the lovely apples out there. :'(

Heck, i've seen "stock photos" that were basically porn and Yaoi images that were in about the same poses!!

I didn't know I had my DA account set up to view all contents because I'd see pictures I'd rather not remember on the front page and I'd go "sdhahdjgkajsdl!!! Why does DA allow people to post this kind of stuff??!!" More than once I was scarred for life from those pictures x_X If those kinds of images are allowed on DA it seems hypocritical that something sensual and mildly sexual would be banned. From what you're saying, I wonder if people affiliated with the studios have something to do with this,i.e. banning good, sensual images because it might be mistaken as works from the animators themselves?

Date: 2010-09-24 01:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com
Wow. That sucks! Fruit allergy is like the worse allergy ever! Right up there with chocolate! I'm so sorry to hear that!

I don't think it would be someone from the studios (is anything, animators may like it and the Disney censorship committee probably has better things to do then churn thru D.A.) From what these two artists have described, it was just deviants who seemed to think they were upholding some kind of morality. I guess sensuality is scarier than outright porn to them (oh noes! They love each other! And their naughty bits are covered! AAaaaa!)

Stuff like that is what makes me reluctant to sign up with Deviant Art. It doesn't surprise me that "artists" who trace stock pictures of Naruto get more attention than genuinely talented folks like Torreadora (since we all know popularity series=views). But the fact that tasteful pictures of consensual intimacy get flagged while thousands of pictures of Roy Mustang raping Ed Elric stay on is just scary/depressing.

From: [identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com
Torreadora is popular though, but one of the side effects of her popularity is that every idiot out there checks out her work and whines about it (when there's a mature filter too! They don't have to click on it! And they still do!)

Don't get me started on the rape pictures. Or those "let's draw the characters overweight" pictures. Why are those so popular?

mmmmm, apples. Got a little bit of Holo in you then, eh? My favorite kind are Gala and Fiji. I love the sweet juicy ones! Granny Smith's are pretty awesome too!!

And I have seen the art that Lily posted that you're referring too. It's strange though that people raise such a stink about it when I've seen images of women's hoo-has on the front page. I'm not bothered too much by sensual art because most of the time it's presented in a tasteful way. I'm not too keen on straight up porn, but there are those of us who do know the difference...

I hate hearing of people getting their art criticized over crap like that. It's usually just anal retentiveness in a select few that ruin it for the majority :(
