Putting the myth and mythology

It's official, I have too many fanfiction writers in my friends.
This comic is inspired by the myth of Persephone, for those of you who might not know.
So autumn and it's unpredictable nature is upon us. We have days that were positively heatwaves followed by windy, stormy cold. Brrr.
Animals are preparing to hibernate and me and Link had to deal with some pretty bold squirrel invasion. It's no secret that our apartment as old, really crappy windows. It's one of the reasons why we don't pay for the heating. Nobody would want to pay to heat up an apartment this badly isolated. In front of the balcony, we have a large tree. And next to the balcony door, two windows. One had a mosquito screen and the other didn't. So we never opened the one without one. The mosquito screen on the other was broken (it could be lifted from the bottom) but we figured it will still keep bugs out. We didn't consider large tree-dwelling rodents. For this past week, whenever I cam home, I always found the bread bag open, on the floor. I always assumed it was Link hitting and dropping it while making his coffee. But then one day, I walked in and saw squirrels collecting said bread, and escape under the screen.
I taped the screen down on both sides using duct tape. They chewed through it. Link caught them escaping with two apples and more bread. Link ended up trying to sew the screen back in place. But now that the weather is cooler, we just closed that window. Bold squirrels. I tell you. I' all for them getting food for the winter, but i'd rather not share too much of my food with them.
It's been really windy these past few days. It feels good to feel the air move.
I need to hit the art store soon. Isa needs supplies.
Generally stuff is good. Work stuff and some activity on my family side was a little sad, though I won't really mention it here. But I assure you guys that i'm doing well and i'm a good mood, despite the temperature dropping.

Date: 2010-09-06 12:03 am (UTC)I really should make more jokes with these guys. I already gave the muse pretty much a canon status.

Date: 2010-09-05 08:42 pm (UTC)The worst part about squirrels is that they're smart enough to think "Hey, I got food here, so I can come here again to get more food." @_@ With that said, hopefully those squirrels will move on. It's not good for you or for those little critters to start depending on humans.

Date: 2010-09-05 09:16 pm (UTC)The most important thing to remember in living with animals (pets, wild, etc.) is that They will take any and every opportunity to dupe humans. No joke. If they know you have unprotected food, they will gladly take it off your hands for you. One year at camp a squirrel actually broke into one of our leader's cabins and chewed right through her backpack's pocket to get at the Hershey's Kisses she'd stashed there. Just be glad you don't have bears! My dad still has the pack a bear clawed into to get at the food within. (This after my dad hung the pack from a tree to keep it "safe". Ha!)
Just as a general rule, you should never keep food out anyway. Mice are the worst at living in your same space and coming to call at night, and the only real way to figure out they're there is if they leave their little poops behind. (Or worse, their pee. It smells awful!) Seriously, if you don't already, put all of your food in cupboards or containers that are hard for critters to get at.

Date: 2010-09-06 12:09 am (UTC)I don't think we really have a mice problem. This is pretty much the only rodent activity i've seen or smelled. Most stuff is put away anyways. Bread and Apples are the only exception (and the squirrels managed to break a plastic container to get nuts).

Date: 2010-09-05 09:18 pm (UTC)I wish it was getting that cool here. Today's high is supposed to be 98. =P I love colder temperatures. I can't wait for it to be cold enough to wrap up in my brown fuzzy blanket!

Date: 2010-09-05 11:44 pm (UTC)That squirrel story is unbelievable! Dang, and I thought the squirrels in Colorado were persistent! O_O
Lucky for me, the one up-to-date feature in the ancient, crappy building I lived in was the window screens. So I never had to deal with squirrels invading my personal space and stealing my food.

Date: 2010-09-06 06:14 pm (UTC)We have plenty of squirrels here too. I see them carrying away this strange largish fruit that kinda looks like a stunted pineapple with pointy things all over it. It must grow out of the palms here. Also donuts and crackers. The animals around here are pretty spoiled.
