Oh god. Why am I even still awake?
I'm going to head to bed after this post.
I went out a bit tonight. Then came home. I applied to a job I saw online, because the job was too good to be true (part time, amazing pay, art domain, daily management). It was exactly what I wanted, right up my alley. I had to try and send in my resume. We,ll see what happens. Then I sketched for awhile.
dqbunny has given me the dialogs for the first part of Namesake's first chapter. And starting a chapter usually starts with about 3 days of sketching the get into the mood and get the characters down. Woah, you guys. It's going to be epic. Drawing this first chapter is getting me a bit back into drawing fairy tale images and action scenes. I love it.
I watched The Prince Of Egypt while I drew. The animation is so gorgeous. I've seen it ten times and i'll keep watching it. Needless to say halfway thru the movie I kinda paused the drawing and focused on the watching a bit more. It's a good movie. I'm not gonna get into the religious themes of it, but as a story, a "mythical" story, I adore it. It's classic. Two brothers, two goals, divided... Pure movie magic.
I'm considering redesigning my portfolio website. This type with a Red Riding Hood theme.

That wolf plushy. It shall be mine.
Lately i'm really into drawing characters hugging, or intertwined in some way (lying around, fighting poses, whatever). Dunno why. There's something dance-like about it.
Hey, I even found a sketch of the Wicked Warlock of the West hugging the main Namesake protagonist, Emma. This isn't currently a canon scene. But it's so cute, I may change my mind.

I really need to go get some new 0.005 ink pens. I kill them to fast! Stupid details! I'll intricate you!

Date: 2010-08-19 06:47 am (UTC)Prince of Egypt really did have great animation. It's been forever since I saw it though... I know we have it on VHS, but I don't recall ever seeing it come out on DVD. The only thing I don't like about the movie is that they tried so hard not to offend any religious groups that the whole thing was pretty bland. Oh well, they get points for trying. (Dreamworks, how did you veer so far away from such themes?)
Oh goodness, I hated the song with the pharaoh's lackeys though. So sorry, Steve Martin, and Martin Short!
(A wolf plushie? Seriously? We really need to make these sketches reality. You know that, right?)

Date: 2010-08-19 01:41 pm (UTC)I didn't find it bland. Sure, the religious aspect of it was a little so-so, but I found that they did a good job with the characters. Clearly, they chose to focus on the characters more then the religious aspect. It creates a really fun and powerful tale that way. They didn't want to create a religious movie, they wanted to tell a story with strong characters and interesting visuals. And in that aspect, they succeeded.
I'm not a big fan of the lackey song either. It's such a long song too. Something like almost 10 minutes!

Date: 2010-08-19 05:13 pm (UTC)The movie is still an adaption of the original story. They perhaps made it more entertaining than accurate, but that's certainly not the first time a movie maker has done that. (And honestly, it's the story of Moses! You can't tell his story without bringing God into the mix just by the nature of all that Moses accomplished. The miracles he wrought didn't stop when the movie did.)

Date: 2010-08-19 05:18 pm (UTC)In any case, as noted in the post above, I don't like this movie for the religious themes, nor do I feel like debating them or the accuracy of their representation. I love the movie because of the characters, the visuals and the music. And in that respect, I find this is a good movie.

Date: 2010-08-19 08:27 pm (UTC)Namesake is a teamwork. dqbunny and I are both writers. Dqbunny has the task of writing the dialogue since she is much more talented then me at that. But the scenes, plot and storylines are decided as a team. We kindoff edit each other as well.

Date: 2010-09-05 06:22 pm (UTC)Isa wrote what we termed the retcon, the outline of what she imagined the story to be. She sent it to me and I fleshed it out. It's been slow since it's also morphing as we tweak ideas.
For the actual comic, I take the story outline and start writing scenes. We go back and forth over the scenes, then Isa cuts comics from them. She does basic sketches and adapts the dialogue to the panels, then sends it to me for approving. I make changes, send them back, and it's a back and forth constantly until the page is done. We work very well together, which helps a lot.
I'm mainly a prose writer with a background in journalism, so it's been a learning experience to write in comic book form - which is kind of a hybrid of script and prose. The tact I chose is called the Marvel style of writing, where I outline plot and dialogue, but leave a lot of artistic license up to Isa. I think this works best for us. Traditional comic writing is that the writer provides a full script with minute detail to the artist and the artist goes off that.
