So, I went up to Ottawa this weekend for my brother's birthday. It was a really brief, but fun visit. My little brother is now internationally legal (21 years old). To celebrate, we went to see Despicable Me. My brother doesn't really watch a lot of animated movies lately due to his friends not liking them much. So we decided it would be fun to do that.

It was a cute movie. It basically had the same idea as "The Incredibles", aka the super-guy with a family, except in this case, it's a supervillain and they are adopted kids, first adopted to conclude a nefarious plot and then truly loved. The movie was really happy and fun, and I enjoyed it.

Gru made a good supervillain. And I really liked the three girls and how their relationship evolved.

Okay, the Bank of Evil director... Does anybody ELSE think he looks like Dilbert's pointy-haired boss? Compare : Bank director. Pointy haired boss.

Something else really bugged me in this movie. The anti-gravity potion. I kept expect them to use it. There's like DOZENS of situations where they can use it. You keep expecting them to use it. They need to fly? Anti-gravity time! Wait, no. The moon is expending and needs to be put back in the sky! Anti-gravity potion to be sprayed on it? Nope. Characters falling to their deaths! ANTI-GRAVITY TIME? NO.

It's like they are just having that around to make us think they are gonna use it. And then think of something original.

Anyways. I'm going to go take the subway to work now. So tired this morning. And it's raining A LOT. Grrr.

-Isa

Not to mention this movie ACTUALLY has someone punch a fish in the face. A SHARK, no less.

I didn't want to see the movie at first either. But I can say that the trailers do not do this movie justice. Kinda like How to train your dragon.

(First of all, love the art. XD Especially over-protective, "That's my daughter, you!" Gru.)

Yeah, this was better than I thought it would be. I really liked it, and laughed like, eighty percent of the time. Might see it again, who knows?

It wasn't just the anti-gravity potion...I kept expecting the freeze ray to do something uber-cool, or the fart gun. I mean, in the latter's case, it's even like they tease us with it--"On what circumstances would we use this?" And then...awww, missed moment of awesome?

(He would totally do that too)

I was surprised by the quality too. I was expecting an pretty bad animated movie. But it was great. It seems all studios are improving a lot lately. There's no longer a "pixar vs everyone else" anymore. Though Pixar is still a little better, everyone is close on their heels.

Dude, I was expecting him to use the freeze ray on the heat missiles. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME. I think all those cool weapons were just around to make us think he was going to use them. But then he just does everything with his own fists. A methaphor that he doesn't need gadgets? Only himself and his daughters? Maybe.

It's a cute movie. It's not the best animated movie of the year (and there are some plot elements that I question) but it's a fun movie. And I still believe you can easily argue this takes place during the years the superheroes went into hiding in The Incredibles.

And hey, just think, a week from now Stu and I will be hanging out with you and Link. ^_~

Yeah. I kinda want to draw Gru and the girls next to the incredible family in some kind of parc (Disney?)

I just have this vision of Edit and Dash being in the same class because they appear to be about the same age and they keep butting heads.

Dash: My dad is the strongest guy in the world!
Edith: My dad has a freeze ray, minions and a killer dog!
Dash:...Can I come over to your house?

It would totally happen like that too.

And thus was born the Edith/Dash crack pairing.

*evil laughter* And thus the crack pairing spread! XD

I laughed until I cried watching Despicable Me. And then started writing fic. '5 conversations Gru never thought he'd have'.

... Now I want to add the shovel speech. Thanks for that.

-I think the main reason they didn't use the anti-grav potion is because there's no antidote to it, and no sign it wears off. Sure, they could have used it, but then they would have been stuck like that.
And there was no sign that it worked on mechanical stuff. Worked well on the Minions though. XD

"ah, yes, puberty well... Huh" *minions in the background mimicking bees*

I still figured they would use it despite the lack of antidote (at least on the moon!)

I'm going to be honest here. My absolute favorite moment? The carnival game.

The game effectively ripping off kids offends even Gru. And then it's his turn.

This movie seems so adorable that I'd love to see it. Even though I wasn't certain about it at first.

I was really surprised by how good it was. The marketing really doesn't do it justice.

LOL the box of SHAME! It made me laughs so hard. especially when they say hello to a poor little girl inside it. Awwww.

You KNOW that's going to happen in the future.

Oh I saw this this past Saturday! XD I loved it so! Of course I'm a total super villain fangirl LOL! And when they get mushy I go SQUEE! LOL! :P You know, I never thought about the anti gravity formula until you mentioned it now, but that could have been pretty useful! :P

As a super-villain fangirl you must be drooling at the idea of the "Megamind" movie.

Oh hells yeah! LOL! I'm sure it's going to be a blast! =D It's nice to see the story from the villain's side as it really isn't done enough. Makes you see that they are human (or alien with emotion in this case) too. I'm such an angst whore really LOL!

Did you read the description for Megamind? He manatges to kill his nemesis, but then he's so bored he creates a new one. And the new one decides he wants to be a villain instead. Cue megamind trying to be good and save the world while getting the girl. If you love villain siliness, this is pure gold!

Oh yeah? =D I'd only seen the trailer, but that sounds even more win than before! *squee!* Yes, I'm easy to please *giggle* XD

This movie is so cute I'm gonna die O__o

Strangely, I really wanted to see despicable Me, but I don,t want to see Megamind at all.. (although I'm starting to wonder what it's about)

And yes, I thought the exact same when I saw the bank director...

Megmind looks kinda like Despicable me. Where the trailer probably doesn't do it justice. It's about a villain who manages to kill his nemesis, but then he's so bored he creates a new one. And the new one decides he wants to be a villain instead. Cue Megamind trying to be good and get the girl. It sounds like a pile of cute nerdy awkward villainy.

Maybe the pointy haired boss used to be the bank director but by getting hit by too many launched squids he got stupid and got demoted?

Hmm, we have not seen the same Megamind previews, it appears. Your description looks better than what I have seen. I think they make Megamind look obnoxious, which did not happen with Gru.

Hmm, that surely is it, verily!

I think Megamind is suppose to be obnoxious, at least for the first 10 minutes of the movie, until his nemesis kicks it. Obnoxious is a "nostalgia" brand villain forte. Remember those cheesy villains from the 60's?

I loved this movie, so much I took Jenna to see it, thus watching it a second time, which for me is very rare.

Your rendition of the movie characters a little older is spot on, awesome work!

Thanks! They are really fun to draw!

I would actually see this twice myself.
