Despicable me
So, I went up to Ottawa this weekend for my brother's birthday. It was a really brief, but fun visit. My little brother is now internationally legal (21 years old). To celebrate, we went to see Despicable Me. My brother doesn't really watch a lot of animated movies lately due to his friends not liking them much. So we decided it would be fun to do that.

It was a cute movie. It basically had the same idea as "The Incredibles", aka the super-guy with a family, except in this case, it's a supervillain and they are adopted kids, first adopted to conclude a nefarious plot and then truly loved. The movie was really happy and fun, and I enjoyed it.
Gru made a good supervillain. And I really liked the three girls and how their relationship evolved.
Okay, the Bank of Evil director... Does anybody ELSE think he looks like Dilbert's pointy-haired boss? Compare : Bank director. Pointy haired boss.
Something else really bugged me in this movie. The anti-gravity potion. I kept expect them to use it. There's like DOZENS of situations where they can use it. You keep expecting them to use it. They need to fly? Anti-gravity time! Wait, no. The moon is expending and needs to be put back in the sky! Anti-gravity potion to be sprayed on it? Nope. Characters falling to their deaths! ANTI-GRAVITY TIME? NO.
It's like they are just having that around to make us think they are gonna use it. And then think of something original.
Anyways. I'm going to go take the subway to work now. So tired this morning. And it's raining A LOT. Grrr.

perhaps I will see this after all...hmmm.

I didn't want to see the movie at first either. But I can say that the trailers do not do this movie justice. Kinda like How to train your dragon.

Yeah, this was better than I thought it would be. I really liked it, and laughed like, eighty percent of the time. Might see it again, who knows?
It wasn't just the anti-gravity potion...I kept expecting the freeze ray to do something uber-cool, or the fart gun. I mean, in the latter's case, it's even like they tease us with it--"On what circumstances would we use this?" And then...awww, missed moment of awesome?

I was surprised by the quality too. I was expecting an pretty bad animated movie. But it was great. It seems all studios are improving a lot lately. There's no longer a "pixar vs everyone else" anymore. Though Pixar is still a little better, everyone is close on their heels.
Dude, I was expecting him to use the freeze ray on the heat missiles. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME. I think all those cool weapons were just around to make us think he was going to use them. But then he just does everything with his own fists. A methaphor that he doesn't need gadgets? Only himself and his daughters? Maybe.

And hey, just think, a week from now Stu and I will be hanging out with you and Link. ^_~

Dash: My dad is the strongest guy in the world!
Edith: My dad has a freeze ray, minions and a killer dog!
Dash:...Can I come over to your house?

And thus was born the Edith/Dash crack pairing.

... Now I want to add the shovel speech. Thanks for that.
-I think the main reason they didn't use the anti-grav potion is because there's no antidote to it, and no sign it wears off. Sure, they could have used it, but then they would have been stuck like that.
And there was no sign that it worked on mechanical stuff. Worked well on the Minions though. XD

I still figured they would use it despite the lack of antidote (at least on the moon!)

The game effectively ripping off kids offends even Gru. And then it's his turn.

your drawings are so adorable. I love angry dad Gru keeping the boys at bay

You KNOW that's going to happen in the future.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-20 03:30 am (UTC)(link)Strangely, I really wanted to see despicable Me, but I don,t want to see Megamind at all.. (although I'm starting to wonder what it's about)
And yes, I thought the exact same when I saw the bank director...

Maybe the pointy haired boss used to be the bank director but by getting hit by too many launched squids he got stupid and got demoted?

Your rendition of the movie characters a little older is spot on, awesome work!

I would actually see this twice myself.
