...Ladies.
Aug. 26th, 2009 08:32 pmROSE finally exists as a book. But I can't sell it before the launch so you guys are still going to have to way next monday for the list of stores/who wants to order thru me post kiddos!
The books look good. Kinda. I'm very angry at the cover. It's pixellated and odd. Aside from that, the rest seems pretty okay (just ignore me being a picky artist looking at her pages saying "I'm a crappy artist! I ink bad! Aaaah!" Because I don't have much self esteem.) For those of you requesting a photo of the book and those of you requesting photos of my new hair style here you go. Yep, it's blurry. Live with it XD.
The few people who have seen the book so far have had interesting comments. Lots of cool suggestions. However, I was amused by a somewhat sexist comment a guy-friend of mine said: "This book is so very like you!" Intrigued, I asked "How so?" ...thinking he was gonna bring up something about the creepy or the angst. But nope he said: "The book is like you because it is about heartbreak and female emotions. You know, drama. Ladies stuff."
I kinda laughed at him, stated that I never have been heartbroken in my life and therefore invented the whole thing and that associating "Ladies" with "Emotions and drama" was sexist. Then he said "But you don't see female writers write about anything else!"
Dammit, where is a good copy of an Agatha Christie of Mary Shelley novel when you need to smack people on the head with it?
Still on the subject of "Ladies", you kids have to watch Demitri Martin on youtube. He is a quirky and hilarious comedian who finds humor in everyday language. And because he is a master virtuoso of language, I have a huge crush on him. I especially like this skit where he made the observation that by simply adding a pause and the word "ladies?" to the end of any phrase, you can instantly make it creepy.
Again, on the subject of "Ladies" (THEEEEEEMEEE!), I made a drawing with all the leading ladies from Tim Burton films. I love this drawing. I really want to finish it!

The "ladies" - Emily (Corpse bride), Catowman (Batman Returns), Lydia (Beetlejuice - cartoon style), Alien chick (Mars Attack), Katrina (Sleepy Hollow), Alice (Alice in Wonderland), The Siamese Twins (Big Fish), Mrs Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Sally (Nightmare Before Christmas) and Kim (Edward Scissorhands).
Tim Burton seems to like blonds.
Time for sleep now!

Date: 2009-08-27 06:53 am (UTC)I'm pathetic. I saw your short haircut and instantly though, "Huh, looks like Akane got too close to combat again." which is odd since I haven't watched Ranma 1/2 in well over a decade. The 'do looks good! I'm ready to go for a new look myself. Long hair needs to die a horrible death!
(It would appear I have not watched a lot of Tim Burton's movies. I really do need to get Beetlejuice one of these days. I'd love to have the cartoon again! Lydia was so cool!)

Date: 2009-08-27 01:45 pm (UTC)This is pretty generalized though. I think there is a lot of people of both genders that seem to master the art of drama.
I never watched the beetlejuice cartoon (English = what are they saying?) but I loved, loved, loved the movie.

Date: 2009-08-27 04:24 pm (UTC)Drama does make for a more intriguing story. Too much can ruin things, but just the right amount is excellent.
The cartoon series was pretty cool. I haven't watched it in forever, but typically Lydia would call on Beetlejuice when she wanted a break from the living world to go run around his world. I seem to recall there being a French skeleton they'd hang around with... I'll have to see if it's available anywhere...
OH! And there's one woman you're missing! :D Way back in the day Tim Burton was the character designer behind a short cartoon called The Family Dog. It's worth checking out!

Date: 2009-08-27 01:48 pm (UTC)He's a bit of a traditionalist and slightly sexist, but I think the more he hangs around with us, the more he seems to learn (read - he learns or he dies a horrible death at the hands of my more violent friends). I think his stereotypical way of seeing women was fed a lot by the women he dated too (You should have seem them - more stereotypical girly-girl then that is impossible.)

Date: 2009-08-27 01:25 pm (UTC)That guy must not have gotten much exposure to female writers if he thinks that's all women write about. My mom has got a whole shelf full of Agatha Cristie books to hit him with if you want. Besides, what about male writers? It's not like they never writer about emotions either.
Tim Burton has an interesting cast of ladies. Soon, you'll have another one to add once Nine comes out in a couple of weeks and also Alice when that movie comes out. *grins*

Date: 2009-08-27 01:55 pm (UTC)The guy puzzled me since I find some of the angstiest, whiniest, 'why don't you looooveeee meeee' crap was definitly written by men. Twillight not withstanding. Remember poets 'back in the day?' Barely any women, but buckets upon buckets of sobbiness.

Date: 2009-08-27 03:30 pm (UTC)I wish you the best of luck with Rose's launch. From one highly self-critical artist to another, don't worry yourself too much over the details, ok? You're a wonderful person and a talented artist -- you will be fine and so will Rose. :D

Date: 2009-08-27 05:46 pm (UTC)Although, I dunno how where she learned about alchemy. I have no idea where she got 'magic' out of 'basic medieval chemistry set' Yet, once in a while, she pulls into the scenario something linked to genuine chemistry / alchemy (like the contents of the human body)

Date: 2009-08-27 09:14 pm (UTC)I admit I was surprised too to know and forget this info at times XD (but the anime is slightly more sexist than the manga so one can be confused)
Now everytime someone talks abut FMA I correct them.
People:"The guy who made FMA is so creative and amazing!"
Me:"You mean THE GIRL?"

Date: 2009-08-27 09:19 pm (UTC)Tim Burton is amazing...but lately his movies are starting to become weird, because he always casts Johnny Depp and Helena Bonan Carter XDDD (Alice is no exception, I'm worried it will be more "The adventures of the Mad Hatter" and the trailer didn't erase my suspicions >_>)

I saw Demetri on Conan once and he was very cute in it. He brought a sketch book with him and had cute a quirky sketches he did.
