Big weekend for me. Link came for a visit. On Saturday, him, me, my buddy Fauve and her fiancé when to eat at a pretty classy (and amazingly delicious!) japanese restaurant with heated tables and cooks who tossed food and made knifes do backflips. It was delicious and impressive. Even if their idea of japanese traditional music is the Inuyasha soundtrack...(It DOES use traditional instruments....who would know aside from anime fans?)

After the food, we were joined by our friend Melissa and went to see Ponyo. Cutest. Movie. Ever.

It's not Miyazaki's best work (several critics and myself agree that it is one of the weirdest and senseless plots miyazaki came up with. Evil Daddy wizard wants to drown the humans at first but is upset when his daughter does it? What? also, his wife is huge.) But it is definitly one of the purest versions of childhood I have seen in a while. The movie is constructed like a kid's dream and the children characters are very much alive (and their moms and super-extra-ultra-badass. Go, Miyazaki Mommies!). So, not awesome. But definitly cute.

I think one of the most memorable things from this movie is Ponyo's greeting - I give you the Full Body Glomp.

You problaby start to enjoy it when you reach puberty.

After the movie, there was desserts and good talking. Me, Melissa and Fauve even managed to score movie posters. Sweetness.

I was also pretty spendy this week. I decided to buy two things I have longued for for a while but didn't buy because both things ranged around $100. The first was a set of 50 watercolor brush pens. I wanted to test them out tonight - so I did. This is a fanart of a fanart. Princess Tutu characters in the style created by [livejournal.com profile] lycorne . You can see her comics about that here. I hope she likes it. I REALLY do. The scan didn't turn out nicely though. It's missing a lot of the hues in the paper version :(

The second uber spendy thing was an iDock (aka, a sound system allowing you to play your iPod)... I've been wanted to buy one for a while, but I was pretty turned off by the square, ugly shapes. Then along came the iBoo, a ghost shaped iDock. It was love at first sigh, and I bought it with Link and Fauve looking at me thinking it suited me. XD

Aside from that - so far this week is a bit of suck. My boss goes on vacation this week so i'm doing long hours until Thursday (and by long I mean like...9 to 12). And on Thursday and Friday we also have to move the office furniture because we are changing location (in the same building, but still. The AC was also broken today, so everyone in the office (and in the building) were turning into small puddles of ooze. It was a weird day.

...and on that note.

Ahhh, tepenyaki cooking. Mmmmm... I usually eat the sesame chicken. It's also where I discovered I was allergic to shrimp...

I wanna see Ponyo, but I needs the moneys first... TT_TT

I feel your pain. T___T I'm not having much luck on seeking a new job...

Dude, I wanna freakin' go to a Japanese restaurant that plays Inuyasha music. >.< You're so darn lucky.

I think it's the type of movie you can wait for on DVD. Like I said - fun, but not awesome.

Japanese restaurants are pretty impressive. I got to go to one back in the ancient days of working in Seattle, where I was horrified to watch them pour Jack Daniels on my order! O_O (I died a little that day.) Alcohol in food aside, it is pretty impressive how the whole process of cutting and cooking food is made into a show instead of just some boring thing you do before you get to eat.

I was always interested in getting really nice pens for coloring my artwork, but I could never quite justify the cost. Aside from the subtle colors not being picked up by the scanner, are you happy with the watercolor brush pens?

I love the watercolor brush pens, but honestly, you can get the same result by buying a set of watercolor paint tubes and a decent brush. It's cheaper that way. however, the pens have the advantage of being always ready and not messy. So good for those who are busy, on the go or draw outdoors. But if doing this will be an activity you spend a lot of time on and sitting down, you might as well stick to the less expensive paints.

Thanks for the honest response! Be it the actual paint or pens, I bet it would share the same fate as my Prismacolor colored pencils; they're super nice, but I just don't have much of a need for them since my emphasis isn't really in line art. A pity, because others are so skilled at it!

Oooh - what restaurant? That sounds fun!
Ponyo looks sooo cute, but based on the trailer, I think you are right and I will wait for the DVD

It's not a bad idea. If you do decide to go see it in theatres, make it a group activity. It's fun!

Ponyo is so cute! I do can't help but wonder what they'll be like as teenagers. *giggle*

I've been looking at watercolour brush pens, but I've never tried them. How did you find them? Were they any good?

As I told Diane - they are AMAZING. However, the same result can be created using (cheaper) methods such as watercolor tube paint and a decent brush. Brush pens are good if you are in a hurry or draw outdoors because they are fully ready and reduce the messy... If you plan on doing time consuming drawings in a seated area, go for the tubes - they allow you to do more color modulations.

There use to be a ramen place I go to that had an Inu Yasha wall scroll by the front door. To this day I can't figure out if that's what attracted customers to the place or if it was the reason it eventually closed down. XD;;

I really like the brilliant colors in the Lohengrin and Tutu drawing. It surprises me that watercolor (even if it came out of a pen) can look so bright. One of the reasons I dropped watercolor was because I always felt the colors were too thin.

geekiness can be scary! The Inuyasha soundtrack would pass as traditional music. Only the geeks would know. And even then, the guy had to point it out for me to notice. Camouflage, camouflage!

Watercolor comes in different forms, some propose a thicker brighter colors then others. Mainly brush pens and watercolor tube paints. Swatches make for light colors because they are really dependant on the amount of water.

p.s. my scanner also made the drawing a bit brigther.

Those watercolor brush pens are really, really nice. And that isn't the first time I've heard Inuyasha music being piped through a restaurant. The last time I had to keep from giggling throughout the entire meal.

(And full body glomps are fantastic, though I think Mike is still recovering from the one I gave him at the airport four months ago ...)

I believe my plans to see Ponyo have been moved to Thursday at 4:30. I can't wait to see the uber cuteness!

So other restaurants do it. Amusing!

Full body glomps are a deadly, deadly art of deadly squishiness.

Brush pens = fun. Though kindoff expensive fun. You can get about the same result with watercolor tube paint.

I love to see them cook the food. Plus it's such good food. I mean, really, really good food. Or at leeast I one I was eating at. My tommy was so happy!

Full-body glomp... Mwa, I smell fanart. >3 That is the most adorable glomp I've ever seen. I need to see Ponyo. It sounds so cute.

I have never heard Inuyasha music being played at a restaurant before -- that is great lol. A nice treat for Inuyasha fans too. :D I was so happy to hear they are releasing a new Inuyasha series soon. I've been waiting for that since the first series ended.

Beautiful artwork! I love how the lines flow and the way the colors enhance the effect. Beautiful! <3
