These past two weeks, after closing Rose (YES! YES WOOHOO!) I started working on my two next comics. One is a short one, but the other is another full book like Rose. This book is called Psychopomp(e).
The story is pretty simple - It is based on a book by Jean Paul Sartre called "Les Jeux sont faits" (Translates as "The Game is up" or "The bets are in"). But in my version, the story takes place in a strange 2036 Canada where non-government approved art is prohibited. Lucien, the hero, works as a censorship representative, charged to track down and destroy artworks created by revolitionnary artist groups. He does his job fine until he comes accross a painting so beautiful he can't destroy. This freaks out his wife, who decides to kill him. The other heor of the story is Kara, a model for the illegal artist. She is the model for the painting that mesmerized Lucien. Kara is killed in a raid. Lucien and Kara meet each other in line to register at a bureaucratic clearing house for the recently deceased. They meet each other in the dead, and slowly find out that there has been a mistake. They are surprised to be informed that there has been a mistake in the paperwork and in fact they were predestined to be soulmates. They are revived and permitted 24 hours to fall completely in love with each other, or their second chance at life will be revoked. However, they are each distracted by unfinished business from their previous lives, Lucien wants revenge and Kara wants to participate in an uprising she was planning with a group of artists.
The grow more and more apart as their time runs out. The archangel tries to help them, but is foiled by Madame, also known as Death, who refuses to aknowledge she made a mistake and wishes to see the couple dead once more. Despite the troubles in their lives and the attacks by Madame, will Kara and Lucien manage to meet again?
Now, the coolest part about this book is that I get to play with the fact that Canada is bilingual. Kara speaks english and Lucien, french. So they can't even understand each other. Talk about destiny hating your ass.
I just finished the cover today: Look, a shiny!

Mostly here sketches for Kara and Lucien. I also have Gabriel (both in human and weird cherub form) and Madame. I had fun with Madame. You Slayers fans on my f-list are gonna love this: as an hommage to Phibrizzo, I gave Madame little soul spheres to play with as well. Heheheehe. I enjoy putting Slayers references in the stuff I do.

The graphic style I chose is a bit of a mix between European comic Spirou and the style I picked up for Rose. I bought like.....6 Spirou books today as references. Oy.
...................................Man I gotta work this weekend. Not looking forward to that. When in hell am I ever going to have time for a life? Oh well. I wanted to go to Montreal at first this weekend, but then friend stuff, my brother's birthday and work decided that was not going to be the case. Pooh.

Date: 2009-07-23 07:28 am (UTC)The story sounds crazy complicated, yet downright awesome at the same time. The style you're going with is also a nice change! I have to say there's something about it I like...I just wish I could figure out exactly what that is... Oh well. Have fun with it! ^_^

Date: 2009-07-23 07:02 pm (UTC)The style is really appealing to me too. It's a bit closer to my more cartoony style, so i`m going to be able to have a bit more movement then in Rose. Characters in Rose seemed more like they were standing around looking pretty.

Date: 2009-07-23 08:02 pm (UTC)I think that may be what it is. I like drawings that look like they could easily move. Static drawings may be pretty to look at, but they don't inspire me in any way. (I was just polite and didn't say anything about Rose.)
