I went to free comic book day at the comic book shoppe in downtown Ottawa with my friend Tama and her boyfriend Kevin. It was a lot of fun. Yes, actual spiderman. Or at least guy posing as spiderman. Heee! I was almost saved by spiderman.

I also got to see Ironman with my family the same day. I promised my brother we would go. Turns out, Ironman is a weird hero. The movie is not bad... But I found it VERY patriotic (american this, american that, evil arabic dudes, evil guy who loves money). It's also kinda based solely on the fact that Ironman is an ass... But it was still a good action movie as far as action movies go. Pepper Pots is definitly the cutest hero girlfriend to ever exist.

Now for the other randomness that occured these past few days:

Galleries want my stuff. I have an exhibit in June and one in July. The June one is in the Ottawa Area. The July one is in Montréal. I spent all of last week preparing documentation and finishing drawings to send to those. I'm really excited about this, and also a bit creeped out. It is high time I build myself a website to show my "serious" artwork. I drew 3 new drawings, one about beauty and the beast, one about alice and one about romeo and juliet... I did those because I wanted a few smaller drawings...

Beauties and Beasts: sorta shows the romantic beauty and the beast idea (true love despite horrible apparences) and lays over that the idea that our animal self (the evil beast within) can destroy beauty. It's a bit of a link on my Metamorphosis drawing. I rather like it.

The Alice and wonderland one i'm calling "the traveler" and it kinda focuses on the fact that alice crosses thru a mirror to another world, opposite to our own. In that idea, she kinda enters into herself, or rather her reflection, seeking truth within herself. On the inne rlayer you see alice  going thru an almost liquid mirror. On the outer layer, you can see two women overpowering one another. It's a representation of alice facing herself, but also the red queen facing the white queen in chess.

Romeo and juliet... I dunno, I was feeling romantic. I like the idea of the bed, how it's a place to rest (sleep or death) but also a place where one rests happily in the arms of a lover, or have sexual intercourse, etc. Basically, on one layer, they die, and in another, a rose holds then together, perforating their chests, somewhat "killing" them but also growing from them, making them alive...

Needless to say, next week is gonna suck. I'm gonna be pretty busy. I need to build frames for these images because on saturday, I need to take them to the Arbor Gallery, who is hosting the June exhibit. I need to have my works in their offices before may 25th, and considering i'm going to be at the Toronto anime con, I really need to get this done. Aside from the frames, I also need to re-do a few of my old drawings that got slightly damaged from being showed in the grad show. I also need to finish my contracts, meet some people, call the hotel in toronto to make sure all is well, go to some interviews, etc. Busy, busy week.

This week, i was shameless. I dropped stuff and went to montréal. I wanted to go check out some cool jobs I found. I ended up getting really sick about a day later after I got to montréal and Link pretty much had to force me to stay down and stop freaking out about doing nothing. It was nice to relax though. I got to play magic with him, watch some movies, read, etc. When I was feeling better, we went to Montréal's chinatown. There was a really cool pastry shop where we bought pork buns, almond cookies and momo cake. There was a lot of goths and punks in Chinatown, most likely due to all the nightmare before x-mas merchandise (soooooo much of it!!!!!!!) Shopkeepers in chinatown are kinda pushy. But it was fun. Link said that the shops there reminded him of the magic tents in Harry potter, since they cram so much stuff in a seemingly tiny space. Link also bought a chinese shirt so he could cosplay Ranma at the con (the ratail fits). I'm still amazed he could find something made in china that fitted him (be advised, it's like a XXXL).

On the way back to the bus station for me to leave, me and Link ran into some mormons who wanted to convert us. Honestly, diane, your collegues really lacked a lot of energy and where midly creepy. They were so incredibly stiff! I dunno if they managed to convert anyone, but they seemed to only want to engage a one-way conversation rather then a discussion, so it seemed doubtful. They really need a bit more passion.

I'm sorry Julie and Ari, I didn't call you guys despite being in Montréal. I blame the sickness. I will call next time.

Until June though, i'm kinda off the map. This week is mostly finish-all-my-crap week, then toronto con from the 22nd to the 26th, then disneyworld from the 28th to the 3rd of June. But like I told everyone; i'll most likely be dead bored the rest of summer, so i'll have buckets of free time. I don't think i'll take huge trips like these for another while after this. It hurst the wallet.

About the Toronto con itself....I need to talk to those who will attend about some details. I also need to work on a costume. I gave up being Lina Inverse for various reasons. I just wanted to sew a really cool skirt, but Link managed to convince me to dress up in something cooler. I saw  black bell dress and it made me think of the black mokona (aka modoki) in tsubassa. So I bought it and i'm currently working on some ears. I have a tiny mokona plush I will carry around with me. I'll show you guys the costume progress a bit later. :)

 That's all for now folks.

everything you do is so amazing, I'm so jealous! I'm excited about Montreal, I sent them all my stuff but I haven't heard anything back from them.

I haven't really heard from them either. But it's not until july so...

Ohhh, we totally have to hit chinatown and delicious restaurants if we all go to opening night with brit. It's going to be awesome.

I'd not be surprised if the missionaries (I hope they weren't just random LDS people wanting to convert the world) were straight out of Utah, thus have little to no skill in conversing with those outside their religion. I'm so bitter... :P This is why I really hate when people assume that all LDS people act exactly the same, and even better, lump me in as well. If you ever encounter people like that again, feel free to tell them you already have an LDS friend who can/does answer any questions you might have, or that you are not interested.

Anyway, sickness is evil! I'm hoping I can have what I need to have done before I leave for Canada as well (if you know what I mean), but thankfully most everything else is done, so once I'm healthy, a few hours should be all I need.

Congratulations on the shows, though! It'll add some stress to the next few weeks, but think of the exposure! I really think it would be wonderful if you got to go into a profession that lets you use your talent.

I actually told them one of my best friends was LDS, and they just kept talking. Link actually told them he was a sophist. *laughs*

And yeah, they really give you a bad name. Big sect vibe coming off them. Not good. Not good.

I love my religion, but some of the people that come out of the Utah/Southern Idaho area really make me wonder what happened. We had two elders serve in my area for a while, but they were so pushy with people about the gospel, that they caused a lot of harm. Some people seem to think it's a game to see how many people they can convert, when they're really supposed to be finding the people who are ready AND willing to hear about the gospel.

If it makes you feel any better, my older sister moved to Utah (only because her husband started school there), but she has trouble associating with the members down there. She actually prefers knowing the inactive members, because they're not afraid to be real, not that frustrating 'fake' personality that runs rampant in the church down there. A family friend was just up here visiting recently who had also moved to Utah (she got divorced after dealing with a lot of grief in regard to the husband, and wanted to take her kids somewhere safe), and at least one of her daughters much prefers the gay community down there for similar reasons. (I just found out this woman is actually originally from the Toronto area, too. She was the first child in her family born in the U.S., but she could have dual citizenship if she wanted.)

Phoo, yeah, some people can drive me insane. I'm very much looking forward to hearing from the sophist. I love talking to people of various backgrounds. I personally have met more than enough close-minded students at school. ^_-;

It sounds like everyone has been having a busy month lately. However, it's great that the galleries wants to do more showings of your artwork, as Diane said it will give you more exposure.

If you need to contact me, just e-mail me and I'll try to be online over the next couple of days.

By the way, I'm planning to visit [livejournal.com profile] gullwhacker for a week at the end of June and he and I are planning to make a day trip to Toronto on Canada Day. I thought you might want to know. ^_~

LOL That's fine, I just wasn't sure if you were spending the summer in Toronto or not, so I thought I would mention it just in case. ^_~

*can't wait for May 23rd*

Spidey!! Heee! Did I ever tell you of the time I went to Universal Studios in Orlando and had my picture taken with Spidey! I grinned like a massive dork the entire time...

Yay for gallery!! Whooo!

And whenever you're at Dis, look me up! Mom and I aren't leaving for vacay until the end of July/beginning of August.

And I liked Iron Man. I think it works in this case because he's kinda flawed. And if you think that movie was patriotic, wait'll the Captain America one comes out...

Oh my god. Cap'n america.

I know they are american superheroes and the patriotism is like...Key...but I find it bores audiences from any other nationality, such as canadian. Instead of being "this is what being american is all about!" they should be more "for the good of the world."

I hate when in Iron man they say "for the good of the world...and the good of america." Should drop the second part.

I'm not anti american or anything but you know... spiderman as like 35 flags in the movie. Just...to tone it down a little?

It seems kind of ironic, given all the people in Hollywood that seem very unpatriotic. There still seems to be some mindset that the U.S. is so much better than the rest of the world, so even if we toss in a lot of things into our movies, the rest of the world will enjoy them anyway. :P (Now I'm trying to think... Did they mention anything about patriotism in the Incredibles? I know in Toy Story 2 they changed the background in one scene from an American flag to one that represented the entire world, and even changed the music, too. Go figure you have to go animated to get movies that are more targeted to the world at large.)

Yeah, they probably should take non-American audiences into consideration a wee bit. I mean, I know the fact they're American comics and all, but...

*thinks* I don't remember that part of the movie...

OMG why did no one tell me about the free comic day.....
but more important: YAY FOR YOU HAVING EXPOS!!!!!!! you'll have to tell me when the june one is so I can go!! (and the july one too, maybe i'll go see you and mariel and britt!!!)
You're going to be so busy!! And how is your job going? werent you working at the Civ Museum??
and i looooove your new drawings, they are gorgeous! I really like your romeo and juliet one, I like the fact that you're moving a little away from the fairy tales, but you stay within the archetypal figures that are recognisable in our culture....
:)

nobody told me about it either, my friend Tama just came to me that day, "hey, free comic book day" and I went OMG!

The exhibit in Ottawa is more or less in ottawa. It's actually somewhere between Ottawa and montréal. http://www.arborgallery.org/exhibitions.php
I think it would be easier to go see the montréal one, plus, you me, mariel and brit can hit the town. Plus, if you've got friends in montréal, you could bunk there, or you could come with me crash Link's apartment (I know I keep offering his appartement, but he seems to shelter a lot of travelers.)

I actually lost the job at the civ museum, but they are trying to get me in another. I hope it works dammit. Want job!

How's your job stuff going?

Yeah, I kinda want to play a bit more with various cultural/archetypal figures that are more into myth, stories or society itself. Though all my work will keep a very fantasy edge I don't want to be "the girl who draws fairytales" to be my own archetype... Plus I was feeling romantic :)
