Expozine

Generally, Expozine went well. Kinda felt like I had missed the dress code memo, because there was a sea of hipsters. Now that hipsters are kinda mainstream, does that kinda make the message of the style moot? Sorta like having an idealist and government supporting punk? Anyways, I digress.

I had some Namesake copies, some original art, some Jabberwocky and Rose books and my tiny fairy tale postcards. I sold a bit of everything, but I didn't do that well. At least I got to give out plenty of cards, my box of 200 was empty by the end. I met a couple of folks with interesting art and webcomics that sat around me, such as Boum, Elise, Emiwan and Geneviève. Check out their awesome stuff!

Oh, I kinda forgot to mention this, but a couple of weeks ago, I saw "Hugo" at the Montréal premiere. This qualifies as one of the movies I know with the WORSE MARKETING EVER. The movie is actually awesome. It's based on a kid's novel, and it's about a young orphan clockmaker who hides in the central train station of Paris, stealing food and gears from the shops around the station to eat and finish fixing an automaton that him and his father found. He manages to fix the automaton, and is caught stealing, which allows him to meet the owner of the toy shop where he stole gears who is linked to the creation of the automaton. The whole story ties in with black and white traditional cinema, mainly the works of Melies. The whole movie looks gorgeous, re-creates old movies and even has some pretty amazing fully-silent sequences (including the 10 minute intro), which I love. It kinda reminds me of Amelie a lot. It's awesome.

The ads kinda make it look like it's the story of two kids and full of slapstick... Grrr.

...so yeah.

Yeah, sometimes when I sit in the bookstore cafe, I see all sorts of pseudo-intellectuals and hipster-wannabes everywhere. It's kinda funny.

Granted, I like some of the style choices of hipsters, but not the overlying attitude they sport. Hmm.

Glad to hear the Expozine was okay - maybe you'll do better at the next one selling wise if the economy improves by then. And I'm green with envy that you got to see 'Hugo' - I so want to see that just from the trailers I've seen of it!

I've been thinking about seeing Hugo, I'll have to put it on my "movies to see" list.

VERY relieved to hear that Hugo is good! I loved the book, it was so complex and brilliant, and I was so hoping they wouldn't clown it up. I can't wait to see it.

I think most people (myself included :p) aren't familiar with classical movies, so if the studio tried to advertise it with that angle it'll probably fall on deaf ears. But I do want to see "Hugo" since I've been hearing almost nothing but praise for it, and the premise doesn't look depressing.

Might have to add Hugo to the movies list.

A bit off-topic, but have you heard of an online game-turned-animated series called Wakfu?

I think it's a question of style too. My style is firmly somewhere between weird and mainstream, so it doesn't quite fit in the completely weird or completely mainstream cons...

Yes, you do!

I don't think it's quite as good as the book, but it's still a really good adaptation, which is fantastic considering how many adaptations they screw up.

But the movie is kinda sad, it's all about a kid who thinks he doesn't have a place but is convinced he can find one because "every machine comes with the exact amount of parts they need, so if i'm here, I must be good for something". All this beautiful dialogue and self-discovery could be included in the trailer. The trailer's slapstick isn't even in the movie, they just re-edited some scenes to make it seem like it was.. .so it's weird.

Yep, I know Wakfu, I don't especially like it though, despite the nice animation and dialogues :D

That movie does sound fun :) I've always dug both clocks and automatons

Sorry that you didn't do that well in sales :/ Hopefully out of those 200 cards that disappeared, you'll get some good options to sprout ;)

Have you read the original book? It's amazing.

Not sure. Maybe because i'm a bit over the whole classic-rpg-type-anime phase. I'll probably get into it when the show will be over *laughs*

Haha, at least three of the girls you met at the Expozine are in my program at Concordia!

I really wanna see Hugo! I've only ever heard really good things!

Derp... I was trying to comment on this for the last two days and LJ kept eating my responses. Derpitty derp derp!!

I was wondering what Hugo would be like. The trailers made it kind of look really kiddy/, so I was wondering what it was about. I also liked the movie Amelie, so that's another reason to go see it, heh. Did you see it in 3D?

From: [identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com
It was in 3D, but it didn't really add that much to it.

Wow, so we just saw it today (in 3D), and you are absolutely right that this movie has the worst marketing ever (a sentiment I also share with HTTYD's trailers, which were also horrific...) I really did NOT expect this movie to be anything like it was and was really blown away at how stunning and charming it really is!

The whole steampunk feel was definitely up my alley to begin with, but the cinematography was flat-out GORGEOUS.

I KNOW! Why did this get such crappy marketing? It's bloody amazing!
