Soldiers and Poppies

I drew Elaine and Fred (or “Five of Red”) from Namesake. A girl who can change the universe with her writing and a boy who was a card soldier in a deck from Wonderland. I love Elaine and Fred. Easily my favorite characters. I could honestly do a whole comic series with just these two and their crazy adventures. Fred came to exist due to my obsession with the Wonderland card soldiers. While other Wonderland fans tended to focus on characters like that Hatter, I was just fascinated with the soldiers. Like, hold the phone, awesome soldiers made of paper? Why doesn’t anyone do anything about that? Cards soldiers have either appeared as silent killing machines or comic reliefs in the media. Seemed cool to have one with a personality.
Happy Remembrance day, you guys. It's a good day to wear poppies. It's also a good day to read "Two Generals" by Scott Chantler. It's a great comic that follows two Canadian generals during World War II. It's "non-fiction" since it's about the artist's grandfather. It's really awesome. The style is simple, emotional and the whole thing is very educative. It won a ton of awards and it's used in schools. So it's pretty awesome. It's even going to get translated to French by La Pastèque soon. Ah, history.
