Today's post is about vampires. Sorta.

This morning, I forgot it was daylight saving time, so I got to work an hour early. So, I went to drink hot chocolate and read a book for an hour at a nearby cafe. The cafe is also a newspaper and magazine stand thing, so I could not help but notice that Twilight was everywhere. I mean, everywhere. It was also on giant posters on the subway. So I guess the last movie came out for Halloween or something? Every time I look I feel like giggling a little because it looks so silly. It's Bella and Eddy smootching and the werewolf guy looking sad a bit further off. I genuinely feel bad for you, werewolf guy. Even the posters make you look rejected. Also, everyone has eyeliner?

Then I noticed there's a pile of teen novels at work with fangs on them.

I wish I could say I miss the good old days where vampires were cool, but vampires in the media have always been somewhat cheesy. So I guess the best you can do is enjoy the better cheese? Like, the finely aged cheddar over the cheap string cheese. Even though string cheese is fun to play with?

I honestly wonder what the next fad is going to be. I kinda hope it's Griffons. :D

In other news, I can't stop listening to the new Florence + the machines album. It's like a siren song.

I couldn't agree more. I mean I love me some vampires of all backgrounds and mediums, but dang, people getting bent out of shape over vampires getting "ruined" obviously haven't been paying attention!

Also, YES YES YES! the new florence album is my new crack and I can't get enough of it. It's already inspired so many drawings and comic ideas I don't know what to do with them I am overwhelmed haha!

Twilight just ruined vampires. Period. And I never had to waste my time or money in watching or reading the books/movies to know how bad it is.

Heh, they actually fit in nicely with a lot of other crap that's being produced. The only difference is the overwhelming popularity.

Oh gosh, me too! I want to do an entire comic about "seven Devils". I STARTED!

Griffons would be a cool fad for certain :P

LOL! @ the cheese analogy! I don't think i could have said it better myself! XD I'm definitely not a Twilight vampire lover by far, but I do dig the genre of vampires. True Blood's more my style... although they can get a little 'sparkly' as well :P

I personally really enjoyed the Night World series when I was around that age. Since then, I haven't really been able to get into vampires too much.

Also, I'm sad about the lack of werewolves in teen books, but thrilled that adult books have them (Women of the Otherworld comes to mind). Werewolves have always been my favourite mythological creature (other than witches), but surprisingly it's harder and harder to find really good books about them. What's up with that?

I still wait for the day when a dog gnaws on me and I become a werewolf.

....

What? Not everyone waits for that?

Actually, Yuki, you should start reading the Watch series by Pratchett, one of the main girls is a badass werewolf who works as a police in Ankh Morpork :D Thanks to her, I'm in werewolf camp!

I missed a werewolf character in Discworld?! Aaaah!

What does the Watch series start with? I must read this!

She starts at Men at Arms but the series starts on Guards Guards

And she gets a lot of focus in The Fifth Elephant.

Speaking of vampires, I'm fond of Carpe Jugulum. What with its stance on modern garlic-proof vampires and romances born of inability to read minds, it's weird that it came out before the Meyer era. And hilarious, what with Dontgonearthe Castle. (ominous thunder mandatory)

Gah, I know! I love werewolves too. I don't know if it's the case in English canada, but in Québec we have like a TON of fairy tales and folk tales with werewolves. And i,m just there thinking "I NEED TO MAKE A COMIC OF THIS LIKE YESTERDAY".

Too bad we don't live closer, we could do a "jam with Florence and draw whatever comes to mind" evening.

I think the new 'Twilight' movie comes out in a couple of weeks, so it's probably in prep for that.

I saw a T-Shirt that said 'Team Edward' on it and it had Edward Scissorhands on it. I want that shirt.

And no more Jack banner on the side! I kinda miss handsome Jack. Emma is a good replacement though.

the Jack banner was a bit old :P

No one wants me to rant about 'Twilight'. No one. It only ends it tears and me trying to find where Meyers lives because it's about a 30 min. drive from my house.

The movie actually hasn't come out yet, I think it does this Friday. It's another one I want to go see, because I want to sneak booze into it and get hella drunk to. :D Too bad I'm not allowed to drink. ;_;

The fad might come down once the last Twilight movie comes out, but knowing the fandom for it, it's hard to say.

I predict the next fad shall be gnomes, they don't get enough love. XP

Or Baum's super-epic-santa

Santa is one fad that will probably never die out. As for gnomes, there's Gnomeo and Juliet. Lawn gnomes aren't much like Baum's Nomes, but I guess they're as close as Edward Cullen is to Dracula.

I've never been much of a vampire fan. I like the mythology, but not the stories so much.

The new Twilight movie is coming out on my birthday. Talk about not knowing what present to get me!

And so much of the Mythology gets ignored too. I mean, did you know vampires can't cross rivers? That's kinda interesting!

From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
There are a lot of different and often contrasting vampire myths, so nobody can very well be consistent with everything. From what I've heard, though, Meyer's vampires take so little from the mythology that I'm not even sure why she calls them vampires.
