Cuties for kiddies
Sep. 22nd, 2011 12:52 am

Here's the last of my drawings for kids! I'm definitely starting to improve with this color thing.
So, saw the Lion King. I... never saw it in English before. I was amused by the fact that Scar is like the only brittish lion in the whole savannah? Also, Mufasa, you are so cool. Seriously. I never noticed before how much he was present as a dad in the mvoie. as a kid, I mostly remembered the part with timon and Pumbaa. So, I was really honestly sad when he died this time. He's really got the dad voice, figure and style. Aw, Mufasa. You also rock as a cloud. He kinda reminds me of my dad too, which is cool.
Definitely buying this on Blu-ray.
Oh, for all you montrealers - Craig Thompson, creator of Blankets, is launching his new book "Habibi" at the Drawn and Quaterly bookstore on friday at 7pm (click here for details). Since this guy is one of my heroes and the bookstore is like 20 minutes of my house, I really have every reason in the world to go. EEE. This is gonna be fun!

Date: 2011-09-22 05:09 am (UTC)The Lion King is still the only movie I've cried the most at, specifically when Mufasa is killed. It was so hard to take as a kid! (I can see why people refer to it as our generation's version of Bambi.)
But here's a fun fact: the voice actor for Mufasa previously (and since?!?) voiced Darth Vader. Kind of cool that he's such a wonderful father in one, and such an imposing (and bad?!) father in another!
Also, you should go to that event. Just do it. You'll be thankful for it later! ^_-

Date: 2011-09-22 08:28 am (UTC)I remember going into the theater when The Lion King first came out. To this day it still remains as one of my favorite Disney pictures.
But...I'm not too fond of the sequels that followed, though. >>;

Date: 2011-09-22 08:48 am (UTC)I love the opening song from the first sequel, even if the movie is a bit cheesy. (And it bothered me that the lions acted so human, what with grasping their paws like hands. Cats don't do that!) And I enjoy the second sequel for poking fun at the original movie...but nothing will ever top the original!

Date: 2011-09-22 12:11 pm (UTC)Second, it's even creepier than the normal Disney. All the prey animals singing a great paen of praise to the birth of a new top predator that will be killing them all, or -- even if he's gone semi-vegetarian -- leading a huge pride of obligate serial killers.

Date: 2011-09-22 02:48 pm (UTC)It is funny how some cartoons will have one random character speaking with an accent when no one else should have it. XP (Did you know the guy that played Mufasa is also the man the played Darth Vader. "Simba, I am your father!" XD)

Date: 2011-09-22 07:00 pm (UTC)I did come across this article a few years ago though, which addresses and shows some proof of Disney copying Kimba. I've yet to ever see Kimba the White Lion though, so I can't say anything personally about it.

Date: 2011-09-22 07:12 pm (UTC)I can say that The Lion King does take a lot of influence from Hamlet...sans everyone dying by the end. Scar was even originally going to say, "Goodnight, sweet prince," when he tossed Mufasa to his death, but they changed it at the last minute. ...man, just thinking of Scar saying that makes him all the creepier!

Date: 2011-09-22 07:59 pm (UTC)Haha, ya, it's weird sometimes in animated movies one or two of the characters will have unexplained accents and everyone else won't.
Mufasa, you were such a good dad! Gah and they're in the field and Simba's like, "we'll always be together, right?"
break ma heart why dont chaaa
I haven't seen that movie in years. I don't know if I can take it lol.

Date: 2011-09-22 08:30 pm (UTC)And, I do think people tend to forget that from the very beginning, Disney has always taken existing stories and reworked them for a theatre presentation. Just think of all the stories Disney "stole" from the Grimm Brothers alone! Why shouldn't Disney be allowed to look to countries outside of Europe for inspiration?
I do find it a bit neat, and definitely convenient, that "Simba" is Swahili for "lion", so Disney didn't have to flee far from Kimba at all to make its leading character a separate entity.

Date: 2011-09-22 09:31 pm (UTC)Aw man, you never grew up with that amazing James Earl Jones voice for Mufasa? He really makes it happen in that movie. Makes you wan to pull out your heart and throw it into traffic so you never have to feel again. And I love Nathan Lane as Timon, I can't imagine any other voice for that character. I'm sure the French version was excellent, but I'm glad you liked this one as well!

Date: 2011-09-22 09:33 pm (UTC)Yes! Especially in, say, a movie that takes place in France like Beauty and the Beast, and the only characters with French accents are the horniest ones of the bunch, a candlestick and duster always sneaking off to make time. Hmmm....

Date: 2011-09-22 11:26 pm (UTC)I saw The Lion King in theatres when I was a kid. The one thing I remember most is sitting in the theatre with a bunch of classmates (including a boy I had a crush on) and trying DESPERATELY not to cry when Mufasa died. >_<
