Art for my good buddy [livejournal.com profile] torreadora of her character Jenny and two of her beaus, Jude and Eli. I could not decide what version of her character to draw, so I ended up drawing her in two different phases of her life, and inking the crap out of them.

I'm actually really glad I met [livejournal.com profile] torreadora  and her sister [livejournal.com profile] kit_a_licious because they are turning into indirect drawing teachers. I spend a lot of time looking at the art these two produce, and it's teaching me some new stuff about textures and lines. So thanks guys! :D

Another something beautiful to look at : [livejournal.com profile] threeeyesworm  linked me yesterday to a video made by "L'école des Gobelins", a French animation school, possibly the best animation school in the world (graduates get hired by Disney a lot). I simply adore this video. It's the story of this seamstress in a doll world waiting for her husband.to come back from the war. He comes home... different. The seamstress tries to fix the world around her, but it's not so simple. This is like a mix of Howl's moving Castle, Disney's Fantasia and French war stories. And it's GORGEOUS. Please take the time to watch this and other things on the Gobelin's youtube channel. Well worth your time.

Seeing things like this reminds me of why I adore animation. It's simple, powerful and communicates with pretty much any viewer.

Some times, I wish I would have gone into animation, but i'm really more of a comic artist at heart. I don't think I would have been that good at it.

Tomorrow, i've got a day off! Link is heading to Ottawa to see some friends for New Year's. I'll be sticking around here (I don't know the people and I already lost a whole week of drawing.. I really can't afford to slack off for another 2 days). So i'll be around home, eating, inking and being buried in my fluffy new pajamas.

Man, why do these artsy "oscar type" cartoons always have a sad ending? I mean, it was awesome and all, but, I swear 90% of these things have 'negative' endings.

I love those inking effects on the little starburst things you drew!

(Instead of practicing my own inking I've just been using the paths function in GIMP because it's smoother. D:)

Because true art is angsty?

I honestly don't know. Must of the stuff I read and draw can get pretty creepy, but it always has a nice positive ending. I strongly believe you can make a story get as dark as you want as long as the ending brings out something positive. I get a little tired of these sad endings myself.

what's GIMP? *is intrigued*

Voila! Teh Gimp.

I use it a lot for photo manipulation.

Pssst, it's free...

What Snapdragon said.

It's has a way to use "vectors," not the hi-res kind, but close enough for free product. I love the ink tool, and you can make the pixel size smaller than 1.

You can't open huge-ass files without it crashing though.

I can do a little angst too, but I usually don't go too deep. Heh, maybe I should try writing a few fanfics to see what would come out. Probably comedy instead.

At first I didn't understand what Howl's Moving Castle had to do with it, but after seeing the video I think Raven!Mytho would also make a fitting analogy. I'm not familiar with French animation (the only other French animated film I've heard of is The Triplets of Belleville, and that's because it was in the running for an Oscar the same year LotR won Best Picture >>;;) but the style of the animation does feel nostalgic to me.

Oh, man, I forgot about Mytho! It's kinda like his transformation too. ;_;

Dude, totally check out the movie called "Secret of Kells" if you haven't already. It's a delicious European film.

I've heard about that movie before. I'll see if I can rent it one of these days off of iTunes.

Aw :( That is a very sad film. Quite provocative and well put together especially for such a short film. Here's one I am sure you'll enjoy called Tar Boy. I posted this on my LJ a while back, check it out and let me know what you think ;)

Okay, I'll have to check this out. I'm always up to seeing new kinds of animation.

Speaking of which, this you see this really creepy one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58iXypYPNrw

Yeah! I saw that one a while back. I don't know why, but I kinda hated it. The animation is gorgeous but the story is just too negative. Good example of "and I must scream" though.

I was all geared up to watch the film, but read about its sad ending... I'm one of those people. My squishy little heart can't take sad endings. :C Looks beautiful, though.

And CHUH -- ME teaching YOU anything about drawing? :D Ahhh... I can't even tell you how that flatters and delights me, as kind of ridiculous as I think it is. Kitter does teach me about drawing, about telling a story, about using expressions. I guess our art has sort of parallel evolutions, for good reason.

And, again. My God. I'm so... touched, I'm so touched by that drawing, Isa. I feel like there's so much symbolism in it, so much to love. I love that her past boyfriend is unidentifiable, because none of them were as important as Eli. (I dig the chunky brushstrokes of Eli's hair.) I love Klimt and the awkward balance of his couples, of these couples, the sort of desperate intimacy... And those little whirling stars. :)

I'm so proud and honored that you drew Jenny. She's so beautiful. Thank you, a million times.

Aww. Next time i'll try to find a happy video for you guys! :D

I'm learning a lot about shapes and textures and filler lines by looking at your stuff actually. And you can always learn from other artists, because they explore things that you don't always :D

I'm so happy you like it!

Yeah, I wanted "jude" to be a bit vague and kinda mixed in elements from the other boys too. In most of the images, she always seemed to be the "strong one" in the couple. The anchor. The support. With Eli, she seems more playful and girlish. I kinda wanted that to come out in these drawings. Of course, it's my personal analysis of what I saw.

and please, the honor was all mine. This was awesome to draw.

(Btw, I dn't know if you use a messenger like AIM, but I though it would be cool to add you if you do!)

Yeah, I love [livejournal.com profile] torreadora's stuff. I love her knitty stuff too. Too bad it's impractical here in Fla. It's even more impractical where she is! Still cute though...

Mmmmm, fluffy pajamas are awesome!!

Oh yes, I saw that video a couple of months ago. It's gorgeous. I always feel kind of sad that I'm not going to Gobélins... but then I remember they were douchebags to me when I went to ask for info >(
