Short comic inspired by Roger Rabbit and the (terrible) movie Cool World.

I love the idea of cartoons living among people. I even wanted to do my own comic about that. Then again, that was a bit of an 80's fad. Though they are saying a second part to Roger Rabbit is in the making.

Cool World, in my opinion, would have been better if they followed the original idea.

Cool World was pitched to Paramount Pictures as an animated horror film. The concept of the film involved a cartoon and human having sex and conceiving a hybrid child who visits the real world to murder the father who abandoned him. Paramount Pictures "bought the idea in ten seconds" to oppose the fame of Roger Rabbit. Then proceeded to change the movie like hell and turn it into the piece of crap we currently have. Pity.

Roger Rabbit still rocks hard.

Don't have sex with cartoons.

It's bad for the balance of the universe.

Whoa.

A toon and a human having sex? That's just, I don't even. o0;

No way that would be aimed at younger audiences. XD;

I love Roger Rabbit, though. And any other live-action/cartoon worlds, like Mary Poppins and Bednobs and Broomsticks.

I also liked Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Better then Mary Poppins. Damn positive witch scared me.

I remember that article! Because they're isn't enough crazy in the world, anime fans need to add some.

That'll teach animators to get involved with their work. This was definitely...different. Did you just do this for fun? (And where did you hear they're making a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? From what I understand there was talk of making a sequel back when the first movie did so well, but it was decided nothing could be done to improve on the original so a sequel was abandoned. Personally, I kind of hope it stays that way. The movie still stands well on its own.)

I heard that the reason Roger Rabbit disappeared after the movie was because Warner Brothers and Disney fought over the rights (and so using him again would cost a TON of money).

From what I understand, it was Stephen Spielberg who shared the rights with the Roger Rabbit character at least. What's kind of fun is that Roger Rabbit does still exist in some sense. While I worked at Disney's Hollywood Studios, backstage there's a painting on one of the animating buildings, I believe, that is made to look like Roger Rabbit ran through the wall.

In any case, I keep coming across articles saying that Stephen Spielberg lost interest in the project, but I don't doubt that it would be insanely expensive to get Warner Brothers and Disney to play nice again.

I heard they were making a sequel in CGI (2d style CGI rather then 2D animation added with cels) based on the second book the guy wrote. I think I saw that on wikipedia, so the validity is debatable. I like the idea of a sequel, but I still think the toon fad is a little dead.

I drew this for a comic page exhibit.

I saw the article on Wikipedia as well, but I also ran across articles like this one. If they do make a sequel, I sure hope they don't use CGI for the main animated characters anyway. (I don't think the fad is dead, it just takes a heck of a lot of skill to convince an audience that a cartoon character and a real person are actually interacting with each other.)

I'd be curious what the viewer reaction was to seeing this comic panel. ^_-;

I had no idea that Cool World had such a dark plot behind it... That certainly would have made it more interesting. Though I was really surprised that Disney and Warner were willing together for Roger Rabbit.

Also I really like how you draw crazy.

Disney and Warner only accepted to work together if they got the exact same amount of screen time. And apparently, if you put a stopwatch to it, it's true!

As crazy as that sounds... I believe it. That may be something fun to do with friends on a movie night.

Though the thought of Loony Sally did cause a moment of hesitation before turning out the lights for the evening. Though I figured writes would be safe unless Sally had a cousin... Manuscript Molly?

(Also I realize my wording was a little deceptive on the last post. What I meant was that I like how you portray insanity in your characters.)

Great comic. I'm mildly curious how an (I assume) American toon lady would hook up with an otaku. Most hard core otakus I've met would sooner die than watch a non-Japanese toon, let alone procreate with one LOL.

It totally sucks that Cool World ended up being such a mess. I could kind of understand if the studio had changed it to be more kid-friendly (family films make more money). But the finished product is still R-rated and not safe for kids to watch at all! So why didn't they just go with the horror movie angle?

Mysterious are the ways of executive meddling. I mean, seriously. The suggestions some meddlers have. I remember reading on Neil Gaiman's blog that someone though it would be cool if they made a version of Sandman where the endless were actually gangsters and not near-immortal entities. Yeep.

There's fans of everything everywhere. Just as there is obsessive shoujo fans here, there must be a toon fan in japan.

Wow, this just is full of creepiness. I love it! Did you draw this for somebody? It just feels like this should be printed in some way.

Huh, I never knew Cool world originally was suppose to be a horror film, but that would explain a few things. Too bad the film turned out so terrible.

(Have you heard about the guy that actually MARRIED an anime character in Japan? He used his body pillow of the character for a ceremony, hence Stu comment about the body pillow. @_@ )

I drew this for a comic page exhibit (hence the high quality).

I remember reading about that guy. The was hilariously creepy.

I think cool world would have been better if they just let the original artist do what he wanted. It would have been much much darker then the actual movie, but also much much better. It would have been Spawn with cute girls methinks.

"The concept of the film involved a cartoon and human having sex and conceiving a hybrid child who visits the real world to murder the father who abandoned him."

Yikes! O.o Holy crap. That would have made for a really creepy (and cool!) movie. It's a shame it ended up becoming what it now is. I confess I never watched it because it looked so stupid in previews. ^^;

I love Roger Rabbit though -- the idea of real life people interacting with cartoons is still cool to this day. I would gladly drop $20 - 30 in tickets and snacks to watch a sequel if they really make it. :D
