Okay, so the new Tim Burton movie (alice in Wonderland) is coming out this week. Woo! That's pretty cool! And, as a lover of all things Alice, Burton and animated, I should be really excited about it, yes?

Truth is, not that much.

I don't like Alice movies. Every movie tries to make sense out of the story of Alice and age up the character. It doesn't bother me so much when it's inspired from Alice, but when you remake Alice, there's certain things I feel you should respect. Certain things that made the story what it's suppose to be. Though i'm sure the Burton movie is going to be movie-tasty-tastic, I feel like it lacks a little something. Maybe because the movie seems to be a chronological story trying to be logical? Maybe because the white queen is all glittering pretty when she's suppose to be a useless log? Maybe it's because Alice is no longer a little girl on a growing up adventure but rather a girl escaping her wedding? But I think what really bugs me is the silence of the character. She might actually talk a lot, but in every promotional thing showed to us, she was dead silent. All the secondary characters do all the talking and she just stands there and is pretty. Alice is a chatterbox. Wonderland throws her around and she comments, annoyed, every step of the way.

I know most people hate the animated Disney version because it is composed of all these elements. But honestly? That's how the books runs. And I like it that way. I'm pretty sure i'll like the movie, but frankly, I hope Tim Burton runs a bit more closely with the books then the trailers let on. Because if someone could make a good adaptation of the book, it would be him.

As for drawings, here is a little something for [livejournal.com profile] lycorne . I promised her I would draw her Avatar (the last airbender) OCs in exchange for another sketch. So here are the sketches my dear!

I did a lot of studies for Karu's movements. lycorne's OC is an airbender by accident, raised as a non-bender fire nation soldier. So when she attacks, she uses firebender forms. Most of her body moves in this very aggressive way, following firebender forms. But I still arranged one of her hands in a more delicate, airbending movement. Proof that she's learning how to combine both forms.

It's because of sketches like these that people wonder if I have training in animation. I really don't know a thing about animation. I just liked to copy Disney poses for drawings as a kid.

I love, love, love Disney's Alice, no matter what. ^_^

I still want to see the movie, but you made a good point about it. The style of Alice in Wonderland isn't suppose to make sense. I'll save my final judgment of the movie until I see it.

My impression is that this Alice is kind of like a sequel to the original story? In one of the trailers, the Hatter tells her "Welcome back." That causes me to kind of wonder...

Yeah, that's exactly what I understood as well...
Not only that, read this plot from IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/ 19-year-old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror.

Sounds to me like a sequel. it would also explain the importance of the hatter (apart from the fact that he's being played by Johnny Depp)

I'm with you -- I'm waiting to see it before I decide, but those are excellent points and I really hope Burton doesn't forget that while showing off an explosion of pretty effects, sets and costumes. But Burton is an awesome storyteller, so I'm sure he'll pull it off somehow and give us the Alice we're hoping to see or something so alternatively epic that it doesn't matter. ^^;

I don't see what the big deal is, honestly. I loved Disney's Alice in Wonderland as a child. =/ I am super-hyped for Tim Burton's version!

I really hope Tim Burton's Alice isn't as silent as the trailers make her. (Of course trailers can only show so much).
I'm still a bit disappointed about the mad hatter. well, they did get the "mad" part but he looks weird rather than creepy.

I've never been a huge fan of the "Alice" set in general (I like it well enough), but part of that may been that I never read the book. I'm curious about the new movie, but not sure I want to brave the crowds. Some of the Burton/Depp fans are cray-cray oot here, and my usual crowd is seeing it as an EGL meet-up. Plus, I have the same worry as you. Secondary characters seem to be the main ones, which is kind of missing the point.

OMIGAWD. The sketches are fabulous. You put my abilty to draw my own characters to shame. I especially love all the stuff of Karu bending with the FN-style, and the twins. The twins look kick-ass. :)

Also, my thingie for you should go up this weekend. XD

I've actually heard from my friend that the Tim Burton is based on the second "Alice" book in which Alice comes back to Wonderland at age 19. She's really into books, so I'd be inclined to believe her.

I feel the same way about Alice that I do about Dorothy and Wendy -- they're kids, dammit! Dorothy may be over 100 now, but she still *looks* like a kid, and Alice *is* a kid. I'm so tired of people saying something is a Timeless Classic, and then trying to "update" it. It's supposed to be TIMELESS.

Looking forward to seeing it. :-/

She'll have to show me that book, because in my knowledge, Alice has two books, "Wonderland" as the first and "Thru the looking glass" as the second and in both she is a child (in the fifth chapter of through the looking glass, she says that her age is "seven and a half exactly."). She never actually returns to wonderland, since the land beyond the mirror is a different place (themed with chess rather then cards).

Movie still looks good. And a few writers adapted Alice as older in interesting ways. Maybe she means those books?

Same here. I'm still excited to see the Tim Burton version, but i'm a little tired of people going "Best adaptation of Alice Evvvaaaar!" when it's clearly more inspired by than adapted. Alice is Never an adult in the books.

Same here - i'm gonna check out the movie before truly deciding if I like it or not. As mentionned above, my beef is mostly with the marketing of it.

Yeah, it is a sequel. Thouh it totally makes sense - Disney is producing this and they already mixed both Alice books in their original animated version. So they kinda need new material. Also, if you see it as the sequel of the animated version, it's kinda cool to think of the concept adult alice = non animated.

As mentionned above, i'll by more then happy to go see it in theatres and appreciate the movie, because it most likely will be awesome. Mostly, I don't like the marketing for it and the fact that everyone is claiming "Best version of Alice forever". It's definitely inspired by, and not an adaptation of the original tale (if anything, it's a sequel to the original tale). So, yeah, mostly it's the marketing that bugs me. I think I expressed a few times on the journal how much I hate marketing sometimes.

Cheshire cat looks pretty badass.

I'm waiting a week before going to see the movie. When I went to see Corpse Bride, there was a row of loud cosplayers that ruined it for me. (Yelling things like "DO ME! YOU'RE SO HAWT" to animated characters, both male and female.) Plus, in the case of something based on the book, what can they really spoil? Also, it's a PG Disney film. So obviously, good guys win. :D

Ha! i,m glad you got the sketches! I got your message too. Shall reply later!

Alice is squee worthy. You just need to squee correctly. Rather then squee "Most awesome book adaptation ever!", please squee "Most awesome movie inspired by a book ever!". It's far from being an adaptation. It's more of a fun ride based on the characters from the book, if they had some logic (They gain about 40% more logic then in the books, but considering they are like... at 5% in the books, they are still pretty crazy.)

Sorry, apparently, literature makes me insane.

I've got good hopes for Burton. He tends to be cool.

But the marketing worries me. Then again, it's Disney. Their trailers are always a little off.

I find it hilarious that a lot of fairy tale adaptations age up the characters and tries to find sub-text in everything. Yeah, the subtext is there and the characters are interesting as adults, but I much prefer the original tales, no matter how awesome the adaptation (and some of them are quite awesome!)

You may have seen my talking a bit about a webcomic i'm trying to start, Namesake. This webcomic will have "adult" versions of the characters, but at the same time, not. The characters themselves are "Namesakes" and not the "originals" and their travels to other worlds occured during their childhood and not during the current story. So hopefully i'm ducking a bit of the adaptation stereotypes. More on that in another post methinks, when i'll have actual comics to show you guys!

Oh...you know, that's exactly why I did not have any sort of interest in seeing Avatar. Because of everyone claiming "It's the best movie FOREVER." =.=; The marketing ruined it for me.

But I have an Alice in Wonderland bias, so. I don't believe it has to be the "best Alice movie forever", just as long as it's good and worth the movie ticket. >/

The whole movie looks badass, and everyone in it. =P
If you haven't heard of the anime/manga series Pandora Hearts, I highly recommend it. Tons of Alice references.

Stereotypes totally ducked! :-) I may have spoken strongly, but the truth is I'll check out any adaptation involving Alice or Dorothy, especially Dorothy. I'm sure you'll respect the chracters.

You literally stole the words out of my mouth.
Really...I adore Tim Burton, I adore Johnny Depp, but...why is this freaking movie marketed as "The MadHatter in Wonderland"?
Image
This is ALICE's movie. They better be LYING.

Those guys at the marketing section should really drop the crack they are smoking...this last year most of the movies I saw were work of arts marketed as cheap rubbish XD
Seriously, Inglorious Bastard an action movie starring Brad Pitt? Sherlock Holmes that looks like "Bad Boys III"?
And have you heard of Rapunzel, the next disney movie, a charming fairy tale that will be marketed as a comedy with Rapunzel's boyfriend as the main character?
