It seems Disney is going back to fairy tales lately (Rapunzel coming out in 2010, The Snow Queen is announced as the next "traditionnally animated" feature, the princess and the frog just came out...). It makes me really happy and makes me want to dive back into fairy tale stories a bit. Yeah, Disney uses clean versions of the tales, but it's still fun to see their adaptation and encourages me to start doing my own again. I looked on the internet for this specific piece of art associated to an Andersen fairy tale. I don't know which tale it is, who the artist is... I just know the image struck me as awesome. I,m not even sure if it's a boy and a girl or two girls in the picture. But I kinda want to write a story for this image. If anyone knows where it's from, please let me know!

Kinda seems like a princess and a traveler no?

Aside from that, I still seem to be having a bit of trouble inspiring myself and motivating myself to draw. Ideas for motivation you guys?

Okay, it's my bedtime. Work starts back tomorrow. Adieu , xmas vacation. You were fun.

Wow, Rapunzel? I haven't heard about that adaptation, and I heard very little about The Snow Queen. Well, just the name only. D: But yay, more traditional Disney animation! Princess and the Frog is a huge success, I'm excited for more!

I'm afraid I don't recognize that image, either. Looks interesting. As for your lack of drawing inspiration, you can always draw more chibis. :D

Other animation: Bakshi's Heavy Traffic, Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers, Mind Game, omg some much more hahaha. I wish there was a movie version of last.fm :P

I never heard about Disney adapting The Snow Queen. O_o

I was pleasantly surprised by The Princess and the Frog (Ray/Evangeline is my new OTP ~_^). So if that's any indication of where Disney is going, than I'm definitely looking forward to the upcoming movies.

Fun thought on Ray and Evangeline as pointed out by a friend of mine:

"And now because I'm a dork I'm going to talk about stars and spoilers.
Considering Evangeline and the Disney universe. Okay so we already know that the "wishing star" is or is where the Blue Fairy comes from. And after Ray becomes a star then Evangeline is seen as shall we say the "second star to the right" which is way to get to Neverland. So if we really want to try we can tie in Princess and the Frog to Pinocchio and Peter Pan.
"

So Raymond/Blue Fairy!Evangeline. My new Disney OTP.

Haha. I like that. Wild theories for the win. :) I'm tempted to do a redfairy!Ray/bluefairy!Evangeline pic basing Ray more off his voice actor with red hair like the animation.

They tried to take the project off the ground a while back (it involved a lot of french artists) but it just died when some people at Disney decided "OMG Trad animation is so last century!" They just picked the project back up.

I concur. It's the Brother's Grim Story "The Swineherd".

It's actually by Hans Christian Andersen. ;)

With the strong nose and lack of chest, I'd say the jacketed one is male. But I'm actually more curious about what is smoking in the corner..

As for motivation...reading? Watching awesome documentaries on television? History Channel is a good one. ^_- Or just touch on existing characters and prod them for what's going on in their personal worlds right now.

That looks like a very old type of a heater that uses coal. With the bells attached, maybe it's "the musical pot" that the Swineherd created to get the Princess' kisses?

If that's the case, lets be thankful it wasn't a musical chamber pot! ^_- I'll have to check the story out when I'm able.

It is an evocative picture, isn't it? My theory: It's a woman traveler whose pretending to be a man for safety purposes -- but the princess doesn't know that.

It's kind of weird how Disney has a reputation of being squeaky clean when there are a lot of dead parents and such in their movies. I guess they usually lack the sadism of the Grimms and their ilk, though. The evil queen in Snow White still dies, but by accident, not being forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes.

From: [identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com
There's nothing intentionally morbid about the lack of parents in Disney films. I think the overwhelming number of dead parents in Disney films is more of a story device to give the young protagonists some conflict and/or simplify the story by including as few extra characters as possible.

That said, after watching the extras on the Aladdin DVD, I'm still a little disappointed that they cut her character from the film.

I agree. Aladdin!Momma was cool.

I believe that the classic Aladdin tale made him the son of a widow, and British pantomime versions of the story called her the Widow Twankey. Oddly enough, not only did the Disney version write out his mom, but I believe his dad turns out to be alive in one of the Disney sequels.

Yeah. In the third movie we find out that Aladdin has a dead-beat daddy who ditched his wife and son to hunt treasure with thugs. And I remember that sequel making his dad out to be a sympathetic character! O_O

Shnikes. That's pretty. Going to have to look that story up.

I love that Disney is going back to Fairy Tales and has promised to start doing an animated feature every two years for the foreseeable future. (Of course, I've been on the steampunk fairy tales kick for a few months now.)

They've also got "King of the Elves"--based on an original fairy tale by Philip K. Dick-- and "The Bear and the Bow"--looks to be a Disney original fairy-tale-type story-- in the pipeline.

Hmmm.... Art ideas and motivation. You cam always join Michelle and I in playing with creating steampunk variations on fairy tales.
Ummm...
I'm horrible At coming up with new inspiration to share when I try to do it.

That's a pretty neat image -- not sure where it's from, but it does make all sorts of scenarios spring to mind. :D I find that pictures like this (mysterious/no idea what's happening) or music inspire me best.

I'm so glad Disney is getting back into the traditional animation and fairy tales -- that was another thing that always inspired me. <3

I really like music too. In a way, I prefer music I can't understand (aka voiceless or another language then french or english) so I can focus more on the mood and the sound to inspire me.

Date: 2010-01-07 07:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] izo-chan.livejournal.com
Ditto. Not being able to understand a language helps keep the focus off the lyrics and on the music and mood instead. And even if you do understand some of it (like Japanese), it's still so different from your own native language that you can flow with the music over the lyrics.

The swineherd was one of the stories I liked less in my childhood. It was supposed to be about a prince putting a snob princess in her place, but in the end it's just about a cruel man bringing misery to the poor girl who rejected him >_>

Wow, the bondage pic in Rapunzel surely looks good XD
