Well, even within D&D it's possible to have the main goal known, but you have to work toward it by doing the smaller quests. We actually did have something like that happen in Relina's party. At one point we had to fight off golems (that hit really hard!) in order to claim a precious stone of some sort, but it wasn't until quite a while later in the campaign the stone was revealed to be able to cause time travel. (The DM used it to fix mistakes we made during the game, such as letting certain party members who actually knew the main plot die. Whoops...)
I think keeping the game small will help, too. Stick with the 'core gamers' who are here to have fun and work together, not anyone who tends to just slow things down since they don't want to go along with it. -_-;;
