I think it probably depends how much people love the magic of Oz. My love for Oz pretty much comes from the fact that i'm completely mesmerized by the strange magic, rules and creatures of the land. Wicked was somwhat magic-less (Since Elphaba being able to do anything is a big deal) and creature-less.
If you're less into the magic and more into political things, battles, character development... and of course, tragedy, then Wicked is awesome.
I did like how Elphaba evolved though. I have to say, I loved reading parts about her childhood, her toughs, especially when she was stranting to loose it towards the end... and the whole aspect of magic being difficult and somewhat alien to everyone was cool. Hence why I think I would have liked the book a lot more with original characters. My own image of what Oz should be interfere with my capacity to appreciate the read.
