The oz books are pretty hook-tastic. I only read them myself a few years ago (sadly, the series lacks a good french translation of all the books, so I only knew of the first for a really long time). It kinda feels like you're reading a medieval version of the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. Lack of true canon, nonsense, magical characters, adventure, awesome princesses... What's not to love!
