Sketchies!

Before drawing a comic, you have to practice drawing the characters. To make sure you get them right and that they actually look like themselves from panel to panel. Today, I practiced drawing Warrick, everyone's favorite Wicked Warlock of the West. He's a bit of a geek with a slim body and a very expressive face. So I tried to push that. His clothing is a large black cloak with "feathers" on the shoulders. The cloak is kindoff "alive". It can protect it's wearer and also allow the wearer to fly. It's a canon Oz extended universe item and a major plot aid several times.

I think he's very cute looking. I like how his face really works with several different expressions.

Again, I seem to be more in a fanart/sketch mood then a funny comic mood. I think it's because my live is very routine-y right now. Go to work, go home, draw, chores, sleep. It's harder to find non-fandom joke ideas when the universe isn't throwing them at you. I'm going to the Sherbrooke subway station tomorrow. Maybe i'll meet the street wiseman again. Maybe he'll have advice for me once more!

Heh. I'm low on comic ideas but my character sketching is REALLY improving.

I'm a little sad. The weather was nice so all the tulips popped out. And then in snowed. I hope they survived. :(

Live purple tulips! Live!!!!!

I love seeing your sketches just as much as your funny comics! ♥ Warrick is quite cute; he doesn't seem to fit the name of "Wicked" here. XD

He's more wicked by definition then in personality. Kinda like paladins are suppose to be good and sometimes they are not. He's the descendant from the Wicked Witch, so, as most family member, he inherited the title.

I love how you do facial expressions! And the character has great flow. Someday I'll have to beg your for a commission or two of some of my story characters when time and funds permits. ^_^

Looks awesome!

I think I keep forgetting to comment on it, but I'm really excited for this comic you and Megs are putting together!

Thanks! I'm pretty excited/nervous when I draw it. I truly hope people will enjoy it as much as I do.

I REALLY love this character! =D (As you already know from a previous comment) I have an instant fondness for him as all I see is a living incarnation of my D&D character when I look at him! I swear you pulled him out of my head, and it pleases me so! LOL! XD Now if his personality were also similar, I'd be totally floored! (If you are interested I could tell you the personality of my character, and you can tell me if they are alike at all? I played this character up to 15th level (he didn't die, the game just ended) he was a rogue/wizard... two levels rogue/ 13 wizard, so mostly wizard, and his name was Victor Enygma. So many hours put in to him developing him! I wanted to keep him organic, so he grew with the story he was played in and I only took skills/feats that felt like something he would have learned in the adventure he'd lived. I miss him so! Good times had with good friends! *nostalgic grin*) Have you ever played RPGs? ;) Anyways, I can't wait to see your Warrick in action when you get your comic up and going! I'm sure he'll be fantastic! =D

I played a little D&D and RPGs, but it never went far. Mostly because I would always intergrate a pre-made group a few weeks before they decide it's time to conclude the game! :(

Warrick's personality is similar to Smendrick from the last unicorn. The fantasy equivalent of geeky. He's not the best Warlock (at first) relying more on magical items (like the cloak) and elements he modified using the gagdjeteer side of his personality. He starts off rather immature, angry and bratty. Then matures into a calmer, more balanced idealist. He also starts off as a coward and gains bravery. I'm not sure if I explain it well.

Is that close to your character?

He's got a lot in common with my character! LOL! Victor was a total coward (that's how he survived to 15th level! LOL! XD) He started off coming from a rich household where his mother was an elf wizard and his father a wandering human mercenary (making him a half-elf) Out of sheer boredom, he joined the thieves' guild in his town and ends up getting caught. (Again low level thief, so he didn't have the skills) But because he shamed his family, he gets kicked out and leaves the town all together. He's a total narcisist and started off chaotic/Neutral. Very greedy not quite as bad as Golem LOL! But pretty bad! *snerk* Very self serving and bratty rating his own intelligence above everyone else at first. He was a better thief than he was a wizard for a long time (High dex, and although his intelligence was very high, he lacked a lot of wisdom! LOL!) He would horde his magical items, but as the game grew on, he learned to care about the other characters and eventually made the turn to chaotic/Good Still a little snotty and greedy, but definitely always looked out for his fellow adventures (usually only putting himself in danger when he had to LOL!) But man! Some of his saves were epic! Their was this one point I'll never forget where Victor and the rest of the party were battling an evil cleric of Malar, and the rest of the party save Victor and our cleric Kirik were down. Victor was on the outskirts casting spells from a safe distance as he was hurt, and the cleric of malar and Kirik were in the throws of battle. Kirik went down to 0 (which means he was staggered and could only take partial actions without falling unconscious. The evil cleric had cast blade barrier around them as they fought (which is a bunch of swirling blades) Kirik and the evil cleric were both almost done for, so Kirik went all out taking a swing and falling to the floor starting to bleed to death. Victor out of spells and seeing his companion felled tumbled through the blade barrier (keep in mind, he was down to like 2 hit points and almost dead himself) He managed to make it stabbing the evil cleric with a mere dagger (weakest weapon in the game) and killing him saving the party! XD It was super awesome! LOL! Ahh memories! =D (Jenna is happy :P)

Perhaps I'm going out on a limb here but he totally reminds me of Smendrick from The Last Unicorn! I love the expressive eyes and the slightly upturned nose.

Not at all! I love Smendrick, and I really used him as an inspiration for Warrick (even the names kinda sound the same. I guess bad wizards are "ick" XD)

Is the cloak based on the one from The Gnome King of Oz?

Not really, though it did have an influence. Only the books actually written by Baum are public domain, so as much as I love Ruth's books, I stayed clear of them. The cloak is actually the cloak from Queen Xiyi of Ix, another Baum book that actually crosses over to Oz (mainly, the fairy forest of Burzee).

Ah, yes. The magic cloak made by Queen Lulea's fairy band.
