If you haven't read today's Girls with Slingshots, you don't know today is the Boobquake

In response to an Iranian cleric's remarks that immodestly dressed women and sexual promiscuity  cause earthquakes (while a giant earthquake is menacing the capital of Iran but no one is being evacuated), a Purdue University student organized Monday's "Boobquake," an event designed to prove Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi wrong. With the help of Facebook, observances were held on the Purdue University campus, in Washington and elsewhere. Jennifer McCreight said Boobquake was designed to show that even when large numbers of women simultaneously wear low-cut tops, earthquakes do not occur.

So basically, we are disproving silly nonsense with cleavage. SCIENTIFICALLY.

I participated. Today, I posted on a facebook wall, signed an online petition and wore a low-cut dress.

Honestly, I'm not a huge supporter of things like immodesty and sexual promiscuity. I believe people should have sex when they are ready and mature, whenever that is for them. I believe people would dress well if you let them express themselves rather then force down a doctrine or a media image down their throats. So I wore a low-cut shirt today. To show I am against people who try to force people to do something by using silly arguments, enforced powers and scare tactics. Those people may be silly Iranian extremists, Christian housewives or the Hollywood media. The point is that they have no right to tell people what to do and use life altering events and guilt to push the points further.

People's only influence should be love.

And just because I can : For the FANDOM!

Because no boob-focused day can pass without a Naga joke.

In unrelated news, [livejournal.com profile] rufftoon  ended today her long-standing "Avatar the Last Airbender" comic called "Water Tribe". She is a drawing genius. And for her, I drew this. Because "Water Tribe" touched me as much as the series itself.

That's all for today.

- Isa

p.s. Shake it like you mean it girls.

EDIT : CRAP! There was an earthquake in Taiwan! However, Taiwan barely moved and little or no damage was sustained. So what do you think guys? Did boobs cause this? Or maybe in was God trying to prove a point by making the quake minor?

Mystery mystery.

I saw that. I'm not really one to be dressed that way either, but for science, I wore one of my lower cut shirts. ^_~ Also, how can we have this topic without a Naga joke.

Did she finish the comic? I need to go back and finish reading that.

Sometimes people come up the most ridiculous reasons for things...if that were true, you'd think there would be an awful lot of shaking going on at pool or beach parties!

Ooh, I vaguely remember seeing a page from the Water Tribe comic. I think I'll have to take a look.

There are typically several earthquakes per day, actually: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html

Mwhahaha! That's great!

I didn't participate, but mainly because if I did wear my nice dress with the low cleavage that I'd been sent home from work!

Like a good bra, I support boobs. I contend that the earthquake in Taiwan was caused when Muslim clerics heard about Boobquake, and all their eyebrows rose at the same time.

Just to add to the "earthquake in Taiwan" fact. No, I don't think it counts. The way I see it, the idea of this is that an earthquake would happen in the country where women were showing their cleavage.

I don't know how many women across the could took part, but last time I checked there were no major earthquakes in Canada or the US. ^_~

The taiwan one did barely any damage too, so...

You have to check her LJ for the last pages I think. That's where I saw them.

If I had known about the Boobquake event, I would have "celebrated", too. XD
Part of me would love it if that nutty Iranian cleric was sent a copy of a Naga-filled Slayers OVA. But I hope it doesn't happen because I'm sure the last thing Hajime Kanzaka wants is to end up in the same boat as Salman Rushdie and Theo Van Gogh.

Speaking of standing up to stupid religious fanatics, have you heard about the first annual Everybody Draw Mohammed Day? It was set up to support of Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and Kurt Westergaard's right to draw cartoons without getting their necks carved up. I think it sounds like fun!

I've heard of Rufftoon, but I didn't know she had an Avatar fan-comic. I'll totally have to check that out now!

I can see why some religious people would equate lack of morality to earthquakes since the Bible (Torah, Koran, etc.) has at least one account of cities being destroyed from off the face of the earth due to lack of morality. I think it's important to at least be understanding of why people believe certain ways, even if it seems ridiculous.

(Case in point, there's no way I would ever show off my cleavage to anyone as it's not considered modest at all in my religion. That, and I don't like baring that much skin anyway.)

From: [identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com
Yeah, In the Bible, they do have cases of that happening (the most well known one being, obviously, Babel...)

Still, I think that using a scare tactic like that in the 21st century (when we know why earthquakes happen and can predict them) rather then, you know, encouraging people to evacuate, is what grates my cheese. It's kinda like people claiming video games or D&D are what causes children violence. Sure, it COULD be related, it would make sense in a way to claim it is, but rather then simply crying out "the Horror", maybe applying a different solution would be good?

Also, considering Teheran is under a religious dictatorship, I don't think this guy is doing an encouraging Koran reinterpretation. He's really looking for amusing new ways to oppress the masses.

I strongly believe people should dress however they want. If you don't want cleavage, don't have cleavage. Simple as that. I always have a bit, but mostly because i'm uncomfortable when I have things high around my neck and chest. I wear tight clothing. However, I find that I have a lot of feminine modesty. You show some skin and still be classy. The key is the class and the lenght of the clothing. Though I guess a lower neckline doesn't really mean cleavage either.

While I'm surprised by the sudden influx of earthquakes (or maybe the coverage ON them), I do not think we have anything to worry about.

But I'm an EVIL ATHIEST.

Athiest or not, i,m pretty sure tectonic plate activity is unrelated to the female chest area. To think priests used to be the most educated people in the world (and teachers). I bet a few saints are faceplaming right now.

The fancomic is amazing. Definitely do!

I didn't hear about that drawing thing. Though, case in point, I think complaining about people drawing bad things about your prophet is a more solid and respectable complaint then linking earthquakes to jiggling.

If earthquakes were linked to jiggling, Gainax who be the bringer of the apocalypse. That's probably why they animated Evangelion!

While I did not participate in Boobquake for the same reasons you mentioned (and I am an ardent feminist, actually), I appreciate your sensible commentary on the issue. Also, LOL at Naga and Lina.

(well, that and the fact recentely was "The Earth's day")

I agree with you. That law is just plain stupid and another reason to keep people in line. Acording with that logic, accident human tribes in Africa, Asia or SouthAmerica such like Yanomami or Masai, should be dead because their inmorality.

Radical concepts always are used to slave people.

I feel sorry for the coming earthquaque.

Complaining is one thing. Using murder and threats of violence to rob artists of their security and free expression is a whole other kettle of fish. Just sayin'.

We know, yes, but not everyone in the world is up to date on science. I just heard something on the news the other day about someone trying to poison women who dared to be educated over in...Afghanistan? The Middle East is in all sorts of dire straits, only one reason being because women being educated is frowned upon by many. We take so much for granted elsewhere in the world.
