Truly, this is a good name for this post, because it's going to be about a lot of things past.

Well, I haven't posted in a while (I blame my education *laughs*) and I though about posting something for Valentines day but I din't because of lack of time (exam to prepare, volonteer at a valentines day party to get money for stuff) and also because I didn't have an idea.
Now I had one, here it is :

Yes, it's two people kissing. I found these two pictures while goig through the pile of stuff on my desk. The interesting thing is that the colored one is a really old picture and the other is fairly recent (a few weeks back). I remember when I did the colored one, I was about 15 or 16. Maybe 17. Back then I hated drawing people kissing. I was no good at it, for one thing, and also I felt I was invading the character's privacy (yes, I created them, and yet I felt that way. Weird huh?) Nowadays, I don't feel quite so shy towards my characters. I believe it is due to my own life experiences and also to the fact that I've done a few naked drawings, some of them with a naked model before me (horray for life drawing classes) so...Drawing people kissing just dosen't seem so bad anymore. I've also practised drawing people kissing a lot to the demand of my friend and partner in crime who designs comic bok stories with me. I think I got better. The second drawing is clearly more dynamic. I still like the first one a lot though. Back then, that was one of my absolute bests shots at drawing kissing (that drawing took for ever!) and I also really love the characters in the colored one. It's and angel and a devil, and in the storyline actually illustrated here, the demon goes back to hell and the angel, with the help of an half-angel, deguises herself to go find out why the demon left her and their friends on earth. They eventually meet in hell, and the demon confesses his love for the angel, and tells her he left because their relantionship would never work and he just could not take that.

The second drawing is a couple from a series we are working on now. It's a couple that hooks up fairly early in the story while the other couples don't hook up before a while. However, they may be cute and cuddly, they won't have it easy! When you're a wizard couple, hell thends to get in the way of alot of stuff. I rather like that coupe too.
Both drawings have a very different tension in them. One is very dynamic, and the other more painful. Hee. Like'em.

Other then that, on valentines day, my antivirus went viral. I kid you not. It was designed for windows 98 and I have xp, so it started going coo-coo this week and decided to give me the full blown insanity on that day. After a lot of effort and help from people with better computer knowledge then me, we finally managed to delete the evil anti-virus (it was hard and long) and I downloaded a temporary trial version of another until I get down to buying a new one. I've got 3 months to do so...

On a final note, i'm an idiot, and I'm very sorry. I was supposed to spend valentines day with someone I really wanted to see, but instead I called the poor guy up and told him not to come by since it was stupid because it was snowing, and a long bus trip for barely any time together. I also felt sick, had homework and school in the morning and so did he. I realise now that was stupid, because I ruined my day (and his) and got really nothing good out of it. I also lisened to a few people I know compain about valentines day and I realised that hating that day on the account of bad memories was an awful reason. It's easy to cure that with good memories after all, if I wasen't such a stubborn, prideful, idiotic woman.

*ahem* Well, if your reading this, do you forgive me?

Wow! They're both good.

I find that drawing kissing scenes can be hard because you want to make it look interesting but somewhat realistic. I like how the second one has alot of action in it, like the girl is just leaping at him and she lands with a kiss.

Gark. Drawing kissing is hard. Especially if you want to make it look real. I also think it's cheap when a bad kissing drawing is made good with a mood (aka, little flower backdrops or super shiny backdrop) it just makes it look weird. (nobody stiked up the band when I kissed someone, it seems weird to put a fluffy background with not context. I mean, if they are in a field of flowers, knock yourself out, but otherwise...)
I like the second a lot better too. It's a sketch from a comic page. The girl is flying before the scene (she has wind magic) I must admit, I rather like that panel.

Oooooh, pretty! *stares enviously* If I could only steal such drawing skills, I'd be sketching like crazy. ^-^

hehe. Actually, the best way to gain skill is to practice a lot. I for one sketch at least 3 drawings a day. The more you sketch, the better you get. I also believe it's a good idea to look at how to draw books, but only inspire yourself from the technique, because following it step by step doesn't work (it's a somewhat bad technique for beginners)
Another good way of gaining skill is to take existing drawings and copy them. It seems like a copyright violation, but it really helps a lot.

Heh. I've tried. I've even taken two years of drawing classes but it just doesn't seem to want to stick. I'm better at writing than drawing so I guess I'll just stick to that. ^-^

Even your earlier piece of art got across the fact that the two are kissing, but I love the sketchy kiss better. (Love for sketchies!) It's much better than I could do. I've actually never drawn a kiss scene before... (Animals don't kiss the same way we do.)

Yeah, the first sketch was my "if I make it right before or right after, they might look like the're kissing" phase, so it's not all that great. Clearly, my technique has improved. And I like the sketchy style to it too...I had this great sketchy drawing of Zel/ame I never finished, but I wish I could find it to post it!>_< Stupid disorganized me.
Other then that...Animals? Don't animals nuzzle rather then kiss? Is this by any chance the confessions of a furry artist XD

Some animals nuzzle, yes. Cats usually butt heads when they're being affectionate though. (Just like the opening scene in the Lion King!) ...and no... I am not a furry artist! I was never really into drawing anthropomorphic animals. What's the point of drawing 'furry people', unless there's a reason for it? (Exceptions would be Beast Men, like in Slayers.) ^_^;;;

I really like the action of the more recent drawing. Really nice flow to it.

And you're absolutely right - drawing characters kissing is a very tricky thing to do. But you're doing it well, for what it's worth!

Hey, thank you! ^^ It's good to hear from people when they like what I do. I don't remember ever seeing you post something before. Do you draw as well?

No worries! It's a good sketch!

And I do draw, too. I'm actually working on an original graphic novel right now and hoping that I'll be able to find a publisher for it. Oddly enough, if I self-publish I'll be disqualified for future Canadian grant eligibility (the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council both consider it to be "vanity" publishing). The story's only about half done now, though, so there's still some time to figure that stuff out. If you wanna take a peek, there's samples up on my site at www.vonallan.com - and let me know what you think if you do drop by!

I've been surfing the comic book type blogs and came across your stuff. I've not posted before, though!

Oh, fellow canadian artist too XD Nice!
You know I actually believe that grant thing because getting grants here is screwed up. I tried getting some student grants for arts and they said I wasn't elligible if I wrote down my parents names because they had to much money, but I wasn't elligible on my own because I had too little money. (You need a certain level of poverty to get a grant or what?)
I'll have to check out those previews, it's always nice to look at ^^ I myself am trying to get down to creating a story. I have a few ideas and a few solid pages drawn, but i'm not all that serious yet I think. I'm still trying to find my art style a bit (if you looked around on the Lj you can see that almost every post has a different drawing style...)
I posted my drawings because I always have more to show then to say. I'm not a very big talker but I do at least 3 sketches a day so...
It's fun, but you don't think of any posts to do if you don't have a drawing *laughs*

I just realized that we don't just share a Canadian heritage, we actually live in the same city. How weird is that?

I feel exactly the same way about grants for Arts Funding in general. You basically have to be an established artist to get funding (in my case, have a book already published). There's no funding available for just starting out. That's tough, 'cuz producing a comic isn't something you just whip off. I suppose they don't want to "waste" money, but it seems so shortsighted in general.

But yeah, for university grants and the like, being poor definitely helps! :)

One thing you could do if your so inclined is work on very short stories. I started off doing 4-8 pagers just to get the flow and storytelling down. It's a lot easier than trying to produce a 22 pager (or longer!) and you can put it "out there" and get critiques a lot easier. Or just critique yourself, as the case may be. That worked for me, but of course, your mileage may vary.

My wife and I both post on our LJ so that really helps content-wise! :)

Yeah, I forgive you
I know you already knew, but I though I might as well post this since I'm reading this for the first time
