Uuuugh, I so see what you mean from WoK. It really was a "sexism is bad!" episode, although I do love our introduction to the culture itself. It's just done better in later episodes, and Suki is less of a token "fighter chick".

Suki strikes me as someone who could go either way. In one stance, she is very attached to Kyoshi as a culture and whole. On the other, she loves Team Avatar and I see her adjusting her life for them, too. She's very...awesome that way.
