Mario, Rango, Maiko...

After a looong conversation with an artist friend last night, we decided to switch the gender of popular video game characters. I chose Mario (Maria), Luigi (Louise) and Princess Peach (Prince Paul). I also drew Daisy (David? Derek?) but I didn't manage to fit him in the sketch... so later... I'll try again.

Today, I saw "Rango". It was good. Though, it's really not for young kids. The movie is kinda violent and a lot of characters clearly die. It's a bit like "The Guardians" (you know, that armored owl movie). Pre-teens and parents will enjoy it. It uses a lot of amazing things from the western genre, re-creating scenes from classic movies almost frame-by-frame. The humor is subtle enough most of the time. There's a few fart jokes, probably in an effort to make things more kid-friendly. I loved the strange visuals, the western themes and the really, really strange mystical desert visions. If you like Clint Eastwood, definitely go see Rango. I mean, really. There's a Clint Eastwood easter egg. Basically, I really liked Rango. It's a bit weird and gritty, which is probably why it appeals to me... Also, one of the characters was a spunky female lizard, another a crow, and of course, there was a chicken with an arrow permanently stuck in his eye.... Heck yeah, strange creatures. and strange cacti... The whole thing kinda feels like a strange dream, in a good way.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] yukinoomoni ! Have some Suki and Mai sketches!

Gender switches are tons of fun, aren't they? I need to start doing more. ^_^

Those Mai and Suki sketches are super hot. And I LOVED the expressions you used on Zuko and Aang.

They ARE fun. Well, more for some things then others. Some series, you could gender swap every one and you'd get the same result.

I figured Zuko would smile sometimes.

Nice gender bending :)

Rango was a good movie(so was Legends of the guardians) though I'm sure the large snake would scare a little kid. The dancing to 'Cool water' by Hank Williams, sr was unexpected, kinda a 'wtf' thing, but the part that I found funny was when Rango went "Help! *bangs on glass wall* open the door!". Saw the making of Rango of Depp doing that and it cracked me up for days ^_^

Thanks!

The dance was weird.... I guess it was to show how they considered human technology as the "godly" source of water. They use a popular song as a holy chant and dance...

Oh, Depp. I like him so much.

I wasn't too interested in seeing Rango from the previews, but you make it sound alright :P How was the owl movie? I wanted to check that one out, but it was in and out of theater before I'd realized it, and I'd taken that as a bad sign 0o

Both movies are fairly good. The Owl one actually reminds me a lot of "Secret of Nimh" (complete with mystical doo-dads and animals with weapons and culture they would be technically incapable of producing). They aren't the types of movies you'll rewatch a million times though, unlike other animated classics. BUT, they are worth a rental. At least one.

Secret of Nimh was always one of my faves! =D I will definitely have to check that out!

Rango has a bunch of people dying? Whoa.

And, hee~ The sketches are amazing and awesome. I love the last one, lmao. Thank you so much!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, dying animals. Also, the... Villain's main henchman is pretty scary. Not for toddlers.

No problem!

i saw Rango and i feel the same.
I really liked it, Johnney Depp is really cool.
But it is true it is quite weird, and violent.

It's a bit weird and violent, but it works in this movie. Definitely made for older fans.

Ah, that reminds me that I wanna see Rango still.

Ffff, Mai and Suki look hot. No wonder Zuko's got that goofy grin on his face~
