Alice and Jack

Sketch for [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  of our Namesake characters, Alice and Jack. I decided to color it because I almost never finish any Namesake sketches, aside from the comic pages. And that's not cool.

[livejournal.com profile] dqbunny  is a pretty epic Alice/Jack shipper. Though it doesn't mean the couple is official or anything. OR IS IT? QUICK, LOOK AWAY TO THE SHINY NOT-PLOT RELATED DISTRACTION!

I love drawing Alice. Why? Because her proportions are non-existent. I mess up her proportions on purpose to make her crazy skinny with long legs. That's how I wanted the character to look. I wanted her to be mostly legs. She was one of the character that really came to life quickly. She has almost always looked like this. Her costume was a little different before, and she had long hair for a few sketches, but Alice really came together quickly, with a side of hot badass.

I love awesome ladies in books/movie/tv series. I'm a little sad that some turn out to be less badass then promised. In a lot of comics, a girl is shown as powerful, capable, awesome... And then she winds up getting saved all the time. Sometimes it's because the villains are just too strong. But really, how come the hero gets to win then? I find that odd.

Another odd thing of the week. I was re-reading my Sailor Moon mangas and noticed something a little ridiculous. Mamoru (Tuxedo mask), in the 16th book, leaves for the USA to study. And Usagi (Bunny/Serena/Sailor moon) is sad, because she won't get to see him often. Then, about a chapter later, you see this same girl teleport to another country and other sailors teleport to other planets! HELLO? Why is she even sad? SHE CAN TELEPORT? I love this series, but I think it's hilarious that everytime I read it, I notice something that doesn't work with the logic of their own universe. Weird.

Have you ever seen Legend of the Seeker? You'd like Cara. She's hot with a healthy dose of badass.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried reading the books and had to give up thanks to a serious lack of time :( And that... thing they call a miniseries really is no good.

[identity profile] eveshka.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The miniseries was good for eyecandy and noise in the background. (And really, the girl portraying Cara was a looker.) The books weren't bad; I'm wanting them in digital for my iPad.

And now that I think on it...

Christ alive, this is everything that pleases me. I mean it. You always put things together so nicely, like some sort of reliquary, all wreathed in tenderness. God.

Have you ever read Jeff Smith's comic Bone? It might be the biggest reason I started drawing seriously, and I reread the series once a year. The heroine, Thorn, is amazing, wonderfully presented -- we get to know her slowly, as Fone Bone does, and she is as powerful as a person can be. Her realization of her power is incredible, reacting with fear and trepidation and then wearing it like the crown it's meant to be. Your Alice reminds me of Thorn in a lot of ways (and as a matter of fact, THAT'S who your work reminds me off: Jeff Smith!).

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oohohoh, i'm caught red-handed! I'm a huge Jeff Smith fan. I even got to meet him one day (he signed my Bone book as I blushed madly). Bone as influenced a LOT the way I draw and ink (him and Craig Thompson). I love everything about Bone and I adore many of Jeff Smith's other drawings.

Alice is a lot like Thorn, especially when Thorn is taking her role as a princess seriously (she takes up serious levels in badass seriously fast!). Which is why I love to draw Alice and to use her in the comic. She's got a really professional side, but she's fragile a bit too. Mostly, her leggy design makes her look more fragile and small. But really, she can take on a giant robot with a vorpal sword. Not to mention that Jack has her back!

I'm still so happy you love my art! In your case, I must ask, what do you want for your xmas sketch? :D I can't decide what to draw for you!

[identity profile] torreadora.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, see, great minds and all. C: I knew you were a Bone fan. I can totally see that about Alice, too. I like deceptive appearances. My Jenny looks so tough but she's just a softhearted bird. (Also: giant robots?!)

You know what? :D I just love everything you draw. I can't believe you want to draw something for me! I could love something with two people -- any two people, or more, hey! -- cuddling together. Every time you draw people touching and getting close it just shoots an arrow right through my heart. ♥

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's not fair, you gotta give me characters!

How about your own characters? Do you have a good example of what they look like? I could draw that! :D

[identity profile] torreadora.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
If you drew Jenny and her Eli, I think I would go crazy with joy. :D Do not feel obligated! But if you want to, all my Jenny art is here. The two comic pages have Eli in them, and my model for him is Joshua Jackson. (I don't know beans about him, I just love his darling face!)

You got it! :D

[identity profile] cxco.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Your background is beautiful! Did you make it yourself? and I agree with you about the character, her slenderness make her sexy as hell.

*laugh* Aww, how cute!! It's lovely to wake up to. Thank you!!

Apparently, Mike is drooling over this picture as well. *smirks at him*

*laughs* I'll have to keep that ship in mind for future presents for Megs. ^_^

I do love badass females and it does annoy me too when they get turn into an object for the hero to save. It's really not until the second book, but I do love the strong females characters in the Queen's thief series. They don't actually fight, but they have badass moments.

Jack sure has a lot of freckles! XD

And Alice has great legs!

Does Buffy count as bad-ass? It's all I can keep going back to. I haven't watched the series in a while I'm trying to remember the ratio of her getting herself out of crap versus people helping her out. She's practically Superwoman in the comics now though.

EEEEEE!!! Cute! If I'm not careful, I may just become a Jack/Alice shipper myself...

Do it! Come to the dark side! There's still cookies!

Ooooh, Oreos! *waggles fingers*

I told Isa on dA that Jack reminds me of Bill from the Harry Potter series. All he needs is a dragon fang earring, lol!!

Oh, I know, it happens most of the time >_<. probably the author wants to add a kickass girl because he wants to be modern and stuff...then totally forgets about her because he is not really that interested >_> (I'm an editor of the Faux Action Girl page at TVTropes, does it shows? XD)

About Sailor Moon...LOL. I haven't read the manga, so I didn't know it XDD

[identity profile] elle-white.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I love that picture! The background is beautifully and their expressions are wonderful!

I have been reading the Sailor Moon manga too and I'm around the same part. I adore the manga, but it does have some plot holes.

I....should start reading Namesake. x___x *is a bad fan*

Maybe the teleportation thing is, and I quote Luna from the American dubbed version, "ONLY FOR SAILOR BUSINESS?!" XDD

Alice/Jack make a hot duo for certain! :P Love that pose! Super hot *meow!* ;)

I'm sure you can gather I'm totally with you on the female bad ass that constantly needs saving *eye roll* Boo!

LOL! Sailor Moon... haven't read it, but that would annoy the crap out of me! :P

Also, yes, Sailor Moon and consistency, no, not so much.

Though that's true of many other anime. Many mangaka and anime creators seem to overdo the reliance on Rule of Cool to overcome consistency failure.
