Snicker-Snack

What's that? It's a comic cover for Jabberwocky. With the help of friends, I managed to unblock on the story and i'm currently drawing it. My goal is for it to be available at the TCAF (I'm going to be at the "Trip Collection" editor table, for those who might want to find me). I'm going to post the page here as I get them done, so you guys will be able to read the full 20 page story. A few pages will be under LJ-cut for violence or bloodiness (this IS the story of a girl that goes to gut a monster, after all). I hope you'll all enjoy it! I even took some days off from work to work on these all over the month of March. Isa, thy name is motivation!

I'm really happy with the cover. I love how it turned out I tried using a limited palette or reds and plums. My inking style seems to work with limited palette coloring. If I recall correctly, one of the Namesake reviewers had underlined that fact. Well, I guess it's true.

I tried to base the Jabberwock off the original "Alice through the looking glass" illustration. I love the big buck-tooth teeth. A lot of other artists make the Jabberwock look less... ridiculous. He's suppose to be a feared beast, so they make him look less grotesque and more scary and dangerous (pointy?).

I really like white, immaculate swords...

In non-drawing news... Is my apartment gonna fall on my head. I swear the pipes are plotting to kill us. They tap in the walls. There's barely any hot water. They make noises that sound like they are about to explode when the upstairs neighbor takes a shower. The whole heating in the building is done with pipes too (hot-water-based heating). So I dunno. I feel like the building has a giant, rusty pipe snake in the walls.

Is...is it going to eat me?

COOL~

My favorite Jabberwocky design - of the ones that diverged from the original, anyway - was Graeme Base's. I just love birds with teeth...

Absolutely beautiful!
And yes, the pipe snake might eat you. Give it some mice? D:

Awesome doesn't even begin to describe this cover!

This looks wonderful! I love her expression and I love the way you use lines to shade. Also the Jabberwocky looks cool and terrifying to me.

Also once again I must comment on your attention to detail. The patterns in the back and the folds in the clothing. All so wonderful!

That is really awesome Isa, I think it's one of your best covers. ^_^

Wow, wowow! This is really beautiful! I think the teeth give 'wocky charm like the original and make him look a little horse-like(or some hoofed creature, I'm not quite sure, but he still looks great.) :)

And lol, That caulking stuff in my apartment is falling out between the bathroom shower tiles. I swear one's going to fall off on my head one day.

(Maybe if something explodes on your neighbor, they'll get the landlord to fix the pipes so you don't have to! :D Problem solved?? D: )

Gah, that's ridiculously pretty!

This is lovely :D I cannot wait to see the comic:)

Neat cover! I do like the subtle colors. It leaves more to be seen by the intricate details used. Snake monster pipes? Let's hope there are no leaks! 0o

Are you sure you're not being haunted by that giant snake from the second Harry Potter book? LOL

That cover is awesome! If I saw it in a bookstore, it would sure catch my attention!

Agreed on the limited palette, it sets a great mood for the picture. :)
We use a similar system for hot-water and heating - judging from what you described, there might some problem with the pressure in the pipes. Worth mentioning to the janitor or whatever that person is called there who is supposed to keep the building in one piece. ;)

What's wrong with a girl who goes to gut a monster? *_*

I did love Alice wearing that awesome armor and going to slay the Jabberwocky by the end of the movie.

And let's not forget American McGee's alice with her companion knife. <3

Looks awesome, Isa! Can't wait to read the whole thing. As always, your work with patterns kills me most dead.

Wow that looks fantastic!

I must admit: I've been looking forward to your incarnation of the Jabberwocky for quite some time. Your Jabberwocky is both terrifying... and whimsical. I'm not sure how, but it is. I'm also very glad that you decided to go with a limited pallet here! It, along with the cell shading, only adds to your detailed line art. I'm looking forward to reading the comic!

As to Jabberwockies in general... I like making mine super lanky, with buck teeth.

I couldn't help but notice that the girl on this cover has the stereotypical Snow White look. I know a lot of fairy tales give their main character that complexion (The Juniper Tree, for example); was that intentional?

Also: I do hope you don't get eaten by the rusty pipe snake!

The Jabberwocky has always freaked me out, so you can imagine that your rendition is 100% accurate. The girl with the sword is amazing.

The limited palette is diverse enough that things don't all blend in to each other, which is nice. I love how white is very limited, so things like her eyes, the Jabberwocky's teeth, and even the sword stand out. (As does the title, but that's a given!) I know for me, if I saw this displayed on a bookshelf in a store, I would pick it up just from seeing the cover alone. It has a lot of eye appeal.

(And D&D fans everywhere can thank the Jabberwocky for giving us the Vorpal Sword, although Relina's is yet to go "snicker-snack" as she slays foes. Too bad for her!)

As for the pipes...ARGH! I think they used the same system in my apartment in Idaho! I HATED it! It's very disconcerting hearing all the sounds water in pipes makes while going about its business. Do keep up with your tucked away ceilings and walls though. One year I discovered water had been leaking into the ceiling of my closet, and it had gone unnoticed long enough that a repairman had to come in and tear out the ceiling to put in a new one. The apartment smelled like spackle and fresh paint for a long time after that... XP

So yes, the pipes might eat you.

Oooooh, I like the cover!! And the limited color palette is a very nice touch.

Also, is that the Vorpal Blade?

Urgh, plumbing problems. Does your landlord know?

I obviously neglected to post and mention how beautiful I think this cover is. That's all I've got to say; anything else is just going to circle right back around to 'beautiful'. So, it's beautiful. <3

I like how your colors look here! :D I'm glad you're getting ahold of your style <3 (I mean, coloring style)
