Sketching...And other things

Today Marco left. He was Link's old roomate in Toronto and had just spent 2 years teaching in Tokyo. He really loves Japan, and he loved being back. He brought us one of those wind chimes you always see in anime. I love the sound it makes. This was a really fun visit for everyone. I loved it.

In other Japan related news, Satoshi Kon died. He's the director that gave us awesome movies like Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika. I'm sad he died. I was hoping to see so many more movies made in his distinctive style. If you've never seen his movie, definitely check them out. Most of them drabble in the strange. But I recommend Tokyo Godfathers to people who don't like mind screws and love stories full of love and good cheer. That movie just really tugs the heartstrings over and over.

I'm just working on Namesake pages right now. And sketching on the side, silly things like the ones on top.

A cute Medusa, some Aang and Katara fluff (trying to meditate!) and Jasmine Talking to the Genie. I always wondered if those two ever really interacted. You know, in the tv series or the sequels or something. I always imagined them as bestest buddies, but I can't even recall if they ever had a significant conversation...

I also got one of those wind chimes when I was in Japan two years ago, but I don't have a place to hang it. XD;;

The only work by Satoshi Kon I've seen is Tokyo Godfathers but it was a really wonderful movie (I cried ;_;). He's also not that old (47 I think?), so it's a real surprise to find out that he's passed away. Does anyone know what the cause was?

Cancer apparently, though it's not official yet. :(

Yeah, we don't really have windows designed for chimes...

Ohhh, nice pictures.
I think Jasmine and Genie might have had some buddy moments in the TV show or the third sequel. But it's been a while since I watched those, so I'm not sure.

And Tokyo Godfathers is a great movie (especially during holiday season). But I'd personally recommend Millennium Actress to people who are new to Satoshi Kon. It's not really a mind screw (it jumps around a lot, but not so much that it's confusing) and I think it's the only Kon movie that has no sex, nudity, or extreme violence (which means it wont scare off people who are squeemish about that kind of thing).

Tokyo Godfathers doesn't have sex, nudity, or extreme violence... does it? I remember one of the character fighting a punk and another being insane, but it still seemed kinda tame.

Millenium Actres had an insane influence on me. I dub it the "adventure time-travelling documentary"

The beatings of the homeless men were pretty brutal. And there were a few breast-feeding scenes which, while obviously not gratuitous or titillating in any way, might skeeve some people out.

Somehow, I don't think Aang would mind Katara interrupting him.

I really like the bottom one.

Jasmine and Genie would be super cosmic BFFs.

And I don't think he would mind if it's for hugging.

If you stared into the Medusa's eyes, you are now stone(d). Way to go. ^_-

Argh, my brain! I'm pretty sure Jasmine and Genie interacted. Not so much in the movie (aside from Genie telling Aladdin he'd never find anyone like Jasmine while Jasmine was present), but I'm pretty sure they did in the cartoon... If anything, I seem to recall Jasmine getting weary of Genie at times because he led Aladdin to distraction. Man, it's been too long since I watched the series! I'm thinking she was also the one to get Genie to pursue a relationship with Eden...then again, I might be completely making that up.

I've only seen Millennium Actress, but that's one of my favorite movies as far as storytelling goes. I don't know about anyone else, but I had no trouble at all figuring out what was really going on whenever the interviewer and his cameraman kept winding up seeing things not normal. (The poor cameraman! I loved his reactions!) I ought to watch it in Satoshi Kon's memory.

I wonder what happens if I type Jasmine Genie in youtube. I'm curious. I want to see what type of character Jasmine was. Mostly i'm wondering if she interacted with other characters or kinda just kept to being the love interest. I know she had fights with Iago and once trapped him in a bowl.

The camera man makes the movie so hilarious. You should really check out Tokyo Godfathers too. You'd love it. It's a really inspiring christmas story.

...And then I gave up on details and just tried to make her look stylized that way! Lazy artist.

It's sad that Staoshi Kon died, I've been meaning to check out his movies since I've always heard good things about them.

You drawn the cutest Medusa ever. ^_^ (The only cute Medusa I can remember is the one from the Hercules tv series. I liked her and I wish they did more with her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVli-1Bl0yU&feature=related )

I think Jasmine and Genie interacted sometimes in the cartoon, but I'm not 100 percent sure on that it's been awhile
