Good news everyone!

You guys remember that "Womantology" project i'm on, yes? Well, the kickstarter just reached 77 000$. The original goal was 25 000$.

HOLY POTATO.

And to think this all started from a random tweet and it's turning into a very beautiful, serious, successful endeavor. Not to mention, this is PROOF ON PAPER that people out there want comics written and drawn by women, about strong women, etc. There's money to be made, comic editors. People basically THREW money at this project. Because they want it. Wake up and smell the opportunity and growth. And stop killing off batgirls and turning the Avengers into a sausage festival.

Even more awesome, in the context of the Womantology, there's a contest where an artist has to design a cover for a single CD for Samantha Newark (Aka "Jem's voice" for you 80's children out there). Cd needed to include headphones, blonde hair, cheeky smiles and smexiness. Also the artist sings energetic pop. So I came up with this :

I really like it. I hope I win. Because I actually like this drawing THAT much. I'd love to see it used. As opposed to just trying, i,m shooting for the stars this time. Oohohohho.

I'll vote for you.

Sam is totally awesome. Had an absolute -fit- when she learned my last name was really Rock.

She's pretty cool. She deserves a badass CD cover.

NICE. :d

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

You won't know until the winner is declared, but I think it looks great! I'd not mind having a CD cover like that! (But seriously? Jem? That is hilariously cool since Jem was one of the few "girly" cartoons I loved!)

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a pretty cool cartoon! I had about the same reaction when I read that.

Great to hear the project has gone over three times the goal! Woot! And great cover art! Here's hoping you win my sweet! =D

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This project is so badass. :D

[identity profile] elle-white.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, this awesome news! Great job! I just know they'll have to take notice soon!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully. jeez. It's like, how much proof do they need!

[identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I'm so glad to hear that the Womantology project WAY exceeded their fund raising goal! Hopefully, this will help send a message to the major comic publishers and we'll get to see more female artists getting to work on stories that don't suck.

Keep fighting the fridge, Isa!
**high five**

I hope you win that Samantha Newark contest. Your cover is really good. It's simple, but still eye-catching and gorgeous.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
HOPEFULLY! This proves it really well. I mean, this is basically a strong argument in favor of women's comics.

Always fighting the fridge! It's why Namesake is full of girls!

[identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
....now I have the urge to draw a silly pic of the Namesake girls attacking a fridge with swords and baseball bats.

Thanks! I,m glad to be part of it!

Congratulations!
I haven't gotten into comics yet, but I was reading an article about a lady who dressed up as Batgirl and went to SDCC to ask questions about women in comics (both women artists and writers as well as the female characters in the comics themselves). The panelists were so rude to her. The audience was bad too. It definitely got attention.
I can't seem to find the article, but it was at dcwomenkickingassattumblr.com
It made me angry, so to see a project like this in motion and so well funded makes me happy :)

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I remember seeing that article too. There's a big uproar too because several female costumes are being re-designed in Dc and Marvel and the new ones are fugly and unpractical (they wear strings). Sigh. It's like it's always a step forward and two steps back with these people.

[identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I remember the uproar when Jim Lee redesigned The Huntress so that she had a goofy belly-window in her costume. The uproar was mainly because it didn't make sense for The Huntress to start wearing a bare midriff while crime fighting right after a story arc that dealt with her being SHOT IN THE STOMACH while on the job!!

And, surprise surprise, the stupid belly window is still there. >_<

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she just wanted to taunt people after she survived.

[identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that could be it. But if I were in her place, I'd invest in some body armor. And pants. And sensible shoes. XD

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's gorgeous. I hope you win too!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks!

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!

:DDDDDDD

And stop killing off Batgirls and turning the Avengers into a sausage festival.

I so agree with this.

And that cover is so amazing! Good luck with the contest! For that, you get my Jem icon.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!!

Seriously. Women want super heroes. STOP KILLING THEM.

[identity profile] snapdragon76.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Too much 'Stuffed In The Fridge' Syndrome. Guys aren't the only ones who read comic books.

[identity profile] savageknight.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck and thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten to put my order in when I tweeted the post! :)

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahah! Best to hurry!

[identity profile] savageknight.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
:) Done. Getting the book and the sketchbook :)

[identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see this information on the site, so hopefully you can answer this question...

Will the Womantology project eventually start selling copies of the book to people who didn't already donate?

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! But how and where, I do not know yet.

[identity profile] io-stavroula.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
LOVE the tilt of her head and bent arms, this cover should totally win!

The way you texture hair is so lovely, I can't stop looking at it. :O
