Wait, What?

As some of you know, yesterday was an election day in Canada. Today the results came in, and they are horrifying.

Oh yes.

Nice voting turnout guys. Sucks that our election system is old and outdated. The Conservative party won, and has a majority in our chamber of commons. Harper won with support from less then 40% of everyone that voted. This year, the results are as they have never been, and it's horribly disapointing. Conservative have the majority. Liberals, the party that has controlled most of Canada for a good 50 years is now almost absent. The "Bloc Québecois" party is pretty much done for, which I find kinda sad. The party suppose to represent the priorities of the Québecois minority totally doesn't have the trust of any of the Quebec. NPD party is the official opposition to the Conservatives, which might bring up some interesting elements... But since Conservatives have the majorities of the official seats they will probably be able to pass a lot of the insane laws they have been trying to pass up to now. I can't believe Harper is back for four years. God. This is bad news for the Canadian art world that is going to loose a crapload of funding... And for gay rights too. And so many other things. Eeek.

I'm amazed Harper was re-elected. I mean jeez, his party was held in contempt of Parliament, that's why the election happened in the first place. They don't respect the system. They were held in contempt for refusing to disclose enough information about the cost of several big-ticket items. This is just going to not go well.....

At least I know I voted, so I feel like I at least tried. But i'm really unhappy with these results.

I'm really sorry, Canada. I am.

Yeah. Daria is 100% correct in this one.

FUCKING WAY TO GO, CANADA.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

It's really this %?@$%@$ outdated system's fault. I mean... We had the most voters we had in forever, and yet he still won?

Stay fucking classy, Canada.

[identity profile] yukinoomoni.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Fucking sheep mentality. The whole point of this vote was to get him out of office, and the sheep blew it because they were afraid of the Liberals. HE WAS VOTED NON-CONFIDENCE FOR A REASON, FUCKING PICKLESHITS.

Jeez, even the liberals weren't this bad, you know? And they got pretty bad.

What are the policies of the tory Canadians? I know nothing about Canadian politics.

Here, there's a list of their goals and histories :

He won because he won the most seats and that's what matters. I'm most surprised that he gained so many seats in Ontario which is usually pretty liberal.

Unfortunately I find this a side effect of the split vote. We can't have the Liberal Party AND the NDP on a ballot. It will always split the left-wing vote, so I think that if those parties care about getting elected they should merge like the Tories did.

The up side is that Harper will be in the spotlight for the next 4 years now that he has a majority and won't be able to use the excuse "I have a minority government!" so if he screws up, people will see it and make their decision in the next election.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hopefully, yeah, people will notice his screw ups.

Welcome to a new strange new land, with a weird ass leader.

Twitter got it right : "The Conservatives are like Nickelback, I don't know anyone who seems to like them but somehow they're always doing well."

I'm glad Quebec made a stand against the conservatives...and I DON'T UNDERSTAND what happened last night. I feel like I just woke up with a bad hangover. How did he win AGAIN? Watching Gilles Duceppe on tv last night honestly HURT me. I never vote Bloc but it was TRAGIC to see a man crushed like that. It's unfortunate to know that the money still moves the tides to that degree.

Best quote ever.

I never liked the bloc much either, but seeing them that obliterated really hurt me too...

Sounds like what happened in the USA after Bush won a second time in 2004. OUCH!
I'm so sorry! :(

We'll survive. I hope.

[identity profile] gullwhacker.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually surprised that they got as high as 40% of the vote. What happened there, anyway?

If Canada is anything like the U.S., it has a very silent Conservative majority. Really, I'm surprised you have so many different parties. If it was just one versus the other (like Republican versus Democrat down here...yeah, ignore the random parties here. We sure do!), I've a feeling they would have had a much closer race.

[identity profile] brendala.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Whenever a popular third party candidate arises in the USA, he typically ends up splitting the base of whatever party he's closer with ideologically (Perot did it to the Republicans in the 90s, and Nader did it to the Democrats during the 2000 election).

Did you know that my buddies in Toronto were REJECTED to vote even though they brought every ID piece they could?

How exactly does the "outdated" Canadian system differ from the one in the USA (sorry to say, I know nothing about the Canadian voting system)?

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Wikipedia can explain it with a lot more eloquence then me : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_electoral_system
