*Futurama voice* Good news everyone!

So, if you are an Avatar : The Last Airbender fan and were awake when the internet exploded this morning, you already know that Nickelodeon officially announced The Legend of Korra this morning, a sequel to the popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Set for a 2011 debut, Korra will be set after the events of the original series and will focus the new Avatar, a waterbender named Korra.

The story goes something like this :

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Sounds cool to me. Cool enough to make me want to draw art of Korra, even though we have yet to see her face. So behold, my version of Korra. I do realize that this fanarts will be scrapped as soon as more production images come out, but meh, at least I can say I tried guessing. Awesome grandpa Aang and Badass Grandma Toph are in there as a bonus.

[livejournal.com profile] schellibie  beated me to it!

My opinion of this news? YAY! YAY! YAY! I don't really have an opinion about this news series other then "Yay, new shiny thing!" because, let's be honest, this is very little information to go on. A few people seem worried about the steampunk, but I've seen asian inspired steampunk in french comics before, and it can be really cool. So i'm not worried.

Other cool thing : Anybody remembers American McGees' Alice? Aka my favorite Horror and Gore Wonderland video game ever? A SEQUEL IS COMING. The graphics looks....AAAARGH! ISA WANTS.

Go to the website to check out the teaser. Hum. Don't watch it if you don't like horror and gore. The teaser itself is pretty freaky.

Nothing put sequels today.

Okay, back to the drawing table for me. Still working my way thru the bottleneck. I can see the light at the end, I swear! I... Oh wait, that's my light table. Nevermind.

Sequels to games are usually a lot better than sequels to movies! LOL! I hope the new airbender spin-off is win for you! I do like your idea of what she looks like even though you haven't seen her face yet! LOL!

Alice in Wonderland horror and gore sounds very cool! =D

A big yes to Grandma Toph! That was awesome!

I hope people ship you Aang's son too, Korra!

These are wonderful and adorable!

S'okay, no worries.

I find spiritual family links hilarious!

Awesome! All the fans are so happy right now! It's so fun!

Dude. She would be the world's toughest old lady. And she would know it. And make sure people remember it.

Thanks! :D

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't even know if that's canon. I wish it was.

Check out the teaser trailer for the Alice. It's so...perfect!

You can see videos from the older game on youtube too.

Spiritual incest would make the best jokes ever. And people will probably ship it. Until a spunky firebender teen is introduced anyways.

I don't see much Tenzin/Korra shipping, for two reasons.

One, my personal canon right now is Korra being the granddaughter of Sokka. And given the Kataang ending, that makes them something like first cousins once removed.

Two, Tenzin is Aang's son. Even if Aang and Katara wated a good twenty, thirty years post-series to start having kids, that puts him at the age of 40-50. Versus our teenage Avatar. So, uh. Yeah.

And that's just the non-spiritual side of things!

(I am not going to make any assumptions on Korra's grandmother. Though Suki's a safe bet.)

Final, silly thought:

Assuming Korra's descended from Sokka. He would have been around 70-ish when she was born - so likely still alive.

Sokka's reaction upon learning that his granddaughter is the Avatar. Discuss.

YAAAAY, KORRA! MORE AVATAR!

...ohmygod I didn't hear about the steampunk part yet. I just had a massive fangirl attack. MASSIVE.

*Hospitals engorged with fangasmed fans*

Since she's from the soutern tribe, it would make sense for her to descend from Sokka, or at least know the guy. His reaction would be awesome. Oh, the potential jokes.

"No matter what I do, there's always Avatar mystical foo-foo around me"

The flowing out of her mouth teeth is priceless :P

Oh! I got the HTTYD art book today! Fabulous! =D

I JUST heard about The Legend of Korra...I admit I'm NOT getting my hopes too high until I actually see this for myself.

Though I do love the idea of a female lead character this time!

And a new sequel to American McGee's Alice? *_______*
Okay, I may be a chicken when it comes to the game, but I just LOVE the graphics and Alice herself. <333333

*is tempted to watch the trailer*

Yes, I have a girlcrush on Alice in the game.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just happy the series gets a new season. Same as Slayers. Whatever happens, it will at least be fun.

YES I KNOW! ALIIICE!

I'm a chicken too. I might only play this in the middle of the day.

Korra looks like a sweet show! I can't wait for more pictures to come out!

Judging from this picture of Korra, I assume she'll be an adult at the start of this series (I can't imagine a 16-year-old girl being that buff). I really hope that's the case! In my opinion, part of the reason why most modern cartoons aren't that good or original is because almost all of them center around child and/or teen characters instead of grown ups. I'm not saying shows about kids can't be good or creative. But, unless the show is fantasy or something, there's only so much you can do with child characters. Also, having an adult protagonist would help set Legend of Korra apart from the original series.

I'm looking forward to seeing glimpses of the original cast and finding out what happened to them. Since this series is set 70 years after the original and Korra has to be at least 16 years old; it seems that Aang didn't live to a ripe old age like many past Avatars did :(. I wonder if Tenzin will bring up how Aang died at any point in the show.

You know what, I actually disagree! Child and Teen characters are needed so that the targeted demographic can see themselves in the characters. Though I have to agree that outside fantasy shows, that's a bit tricky. Things like toons and superhero shows have it down in a pretty interesting fashion too. I wish I could show you the french comics I own. some do these incredible things with child characters. It's amazing.

According to the creators, Aang being in an iceberg used up his lifespan. A lot of the Avatars seem to live to be incredibly old. Does everyone in this universe have a very long life span, or just them? I think Sozin lived really old though, though I guess that's pretty normal for royalty.

When I was little, I never had trouble identifying with adult characters. Two of my childhood favorites were Rebecca Cunningham (the mother/overworked boss in Talespin) and Elisa Maza (the cop in Gargoyles).

My issue with this started when, after the Disney Afternoon faded, suddenly every cartoon on TV was about "kids in school". I have no problem with "kids in school" or "kids having adventures" shows; I just don't think they should have a monopoly. Adult characters can relateable to anyone if they're written well.

Long lifespans seem to be fairly common in the Avatar universe. And I suppose the Avatars themselves can live extra long lives if they manage to do their job without getting killed.

I agree about adult characters being relatable if done well (Batman. The whole Justice league). But for some stories, kids are required. Aang's story worked well because he was a kid. Him fleeing and such would have look pretty weak on an adult characters. Let's see what the creators can do with an adult now!

Your sketches have me interested in Avatar... I think I'll need to check this series out soon.
