The world is suddenly less awesome.

Yesterday, May 31st, 2010, we have lost a great female artist of modern times. Louise Bourgeois was a fairy-tale and myth loving feminist that did strange sculptures with powerful messages. Today, she has passed away. she was one of my favorite artists.

She was one of my favorites because she was made of pure titanium grade awesome. But also because the name "Louise Bourgeois" will always be linked to me with nostalgia to my home-area of Gatineau-Ottawa. One of her best-known piece, a giant spider called "Mommy", prances fearlessly in the Ottawa city, next to the parliament and in front of the Museum of Art.

A lot of people called this spider a waste of money and space. But tourists loved the spider. And people like me loved the spider. and loved so many more of Bourgeois' work.

Thank you for all your contributions to feminism, to the arts, and thank you for making the arts a better place for women.

I'll take her spider over Seattle's 'misguided sperm' statue. (It's not really, but it really looks like one!) That's sad she passed on, but what a legacy to leave! I wonder if more people will visit her works to pay her tribute.

Well, in the case of the Ottawa Spider, it's hard to ignore (it's on so many tourist brochures!)

I hope it will motivate people to do a full traveling exhibit of her work. That would be cool.

At least she was pretty old, she lived a good full life full of pissing off silly art critics XD

I can't believe I've never heard of her. I'll definitely have to do a little research in her honor now.

RIP Louise

You should! She's quite the character.

I'd never heard of her before, but I love that spider sculpture.
