Stitches and button eyes

I am forceful in my attribution of love.

Yeah. I didn't actually try to make a Toothless plushy yet. For those of you who don't know, Toothless is the main dragon in "How to Train your Dragon". He's designed by Chris Sanders, creator of Lilo and Stitch, so he's made of pure cute.

I found a really good tutorial on Deviant art. So i'm willing to try. I'm pretty sure my toothless isn't going to be a Franken-Toothless (i'm not a talented seamstress, but I don't think i,m bad to a point of offending creation). Though I like the comic so much I might actually try to make a Franken-Toothless after I get the "real" one right.

I kinda wish I was a multi-talented person. Yeah, I know you can gain skills through practice, but the fact that I draw all the time kinda seems to have pushed the development of my other skills out the window. I also seem to have trouble imagining things in 3D.  Drawing has rendered my creativity to a flat medium? Perhaps. I guess when you get really good at something and love it, you kinda overlook other types of artistic expression. You should not, but it kinda happens anyways. If only we got days off from work dedicated to trying or learning new things. That would be fun!

At least I know how Lilo felt when she made "Scrump".

Also, this XKCD comic fitted this post too much not to insert it in. Enjoy!

Does that count as 'tsundere'? :P

[identity profile] earthstar-moon.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
LOL Link's expression in the last panel had me and Stu laughing for a few minutes. I think Franklin-toothless plush would also be cute! ^_^

I think we all have things we're good at and not so good at. Example, I can sew but I can't knit, crochet or crossitich (I tried it once in junior high and I only ever made one thing from it and never went back.) It's normal to love and do the things you want to do, but there's nothing wrong with trying something new too.

*Looks up the meaning of Tsundere*

....hey. HEy. I'm not like that! I'M GONNA KICK YOU IN THE...

good luck in this newventure of yours!

[identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, that tutorial! My little sister wanted a Nightfury plush, so we ran out to get fabric today, then I got to work on it. (She wanted to be lazy and play more Diablo 2, but she at least was at the table while I slaved away.) The tutorial isn't nearly as easy as it seems, and the pattern bugged me a bit, so I plan on tweaking a few things before I make one for me. Also...do not make this with a sewing machine! I sewed most of it by machine for convenience, but I really did not like the end result. Thankfully my sister was just happy to have a huggable Nightfury with red button eyes...because she's odd like that...

Anyway, yeah, I'm even more keen on doing this as a group now that I've made one. First-time seamstresses wouldn't fair so well with the tutorial.

This just makes me think of the cake I made Von for his birthday a few years back...see, he likes Carvel ice cream cakes

I think it's a measure of how much Von loves me and Link loves you that neither of them have run from us. ;)

Franken-toothless! XD Too dang cute! :P He needs his own comic LOL! And that link is the bomb digity! I am all thumbs when it comes to stuff like sewing, but I'd like to learn. As for different creative outlets, I agree with you, practice meets perfection, and the more you do anything the better you can become. I love anything creative and am willing to try most things, but like you have certain focus and limited time :/ I divide most of my time between art and writing more writing these days since my mind has ample time to wander at work and I'm driving making art no chance of competing :/ I do like writing though, so no complaining there ;)

Aww, I think a Franken-Toothless would be adorable too.

Wouldn't it be great if one had endless time to develop all skills they wanted?

Apparemment, les filles ont plus de misère que les gars avec la vision tri-dimensionnelle, donc je pense pas que c'est parce que tu passes ton temps à dessiner que tu as de la misère. Évidemment, ça, c'est en général, c'est différent cas par cas...

[identity profile] earthstar-moon.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's good to know since I just cut out all of my pieces yesterday. Any tips you can give would be more than helpful. ^_~

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Trying new stuff is fun. FOR SCIENCE.

I really like the idea of franken-toothless. I guess i's my creepy side showing.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I tried cutting out the pattern and noticed quickly yesterday that this was too complicated for me. What edits do you suggest?

I got toxic green buttons for his eyes, to match the ones from the movie!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Naaaaw. I didn't try it yet actually. This is just my amusing theory of how badly it could go XD

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL MUTANT CUTE CAKE LOVES YOU

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah! That cracked me up so bad!

If you're going to toy with human nature, bring a damn shotgun.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the focus is a problem too. I don't have a lot of focus for things that aren't drawing. I,m not sure why. I've always had a short attention spawn.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I want to see pictures of your test dragon!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes it would be. But then we would not be doing much. Just having fun XD

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] wodhaund.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaah, a Franken!Toothless would be adorable. :D "Ba!"

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I knooooow! Now I actually want to make one.

Everybody needs a little abomination in their home.

[identity profile] shourimajo.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's cute! ♥ You should try and make it :D I have the same "trouble imagining things in 3D" issue (big trouble when it comes to learn to use 3D studio or After Effects) so I kinda sew my plushies... 2D. Post pics if you do! :D

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry. If I manage to sew a toothless, I Will share this success with the world!

[identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're basing the size on the pattern, gave the pieces 1/4" seam allowance, and are working with fleece, 1/4" is too much extra. It really should be 1/8" seam allowance, but only do that if you're sewing by hand. Otherwise just be sure to trim the excess after sewing.

[identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The main thing I plan on changing are the pattern pieces for the extra..whatevers around Toothless' face. It makes for too much extra fabric pieces competing for the same space, so I'm going to combine them. I can show you what I mean later. (I got called in to work, so I need to head out in a minute.)

[identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister left soon after we finished it, but my mom took some pictures. I'll see about getting them from her later. (Again, work.)

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
...2,5 cm. so one fourth is .6 cm? doesn't seem like a lot.

[identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but it makes for too much bulk when you turn the pattern inside-out so that your seams are all hidden inside the plush. Fleece is nice to work with, but way too bulky for some things. (The nice thing about it is that you can have very small seam allowances since it does not fray like normal fabrics.)

[identity profile] parareality.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
XD!!! Oh my gosh, I totally empathize! Making plushies (and sculpting, and many other totally neat things) is HARD!

Aw, I love Franken-Toothless! He has personality!

[identity profile] mithent.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
At least they came to an agreement!

Franken-Toothless is weirdly cute though :p Good luck with the actual plushie - I've seen the pattern and it would be neat to own one, but I think the last time I attempted to sew anything it was a) at school, b) with a machine, c) about eight years ago, d) a lunch box. So combined with my general lack of artistic talent, the chances of an affront to creation are fairly high if I make any attempt!

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
BA!

*franken-toothless sneaks behind your bed*

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Weirdly cute is the best kind of cute.

Yeah, last thing I made was skirt. I is so talented.

[identity profile] earthstar-moon.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's that dragon pattern that I was thinking of alternating (and I still might use it too). http://www.wyrm.org.uk/cuddly/azhreia.html

I think the only thing we would have to change is make the face more round and add the horns to the head which wouldn't be hard. And this is a lot simpler.

[identity profile] secondlina.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I could mix this pattern with the other a bit to add fins and change the head... It would be a lot simpler!

[identity profile] earthstar-moon.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm now toying with the idea of just doing that. Between the two, this one would be less time consuming. Decisions, decisions. ^_~

[identity profile] ichiban-victory.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I had little issue with the body and legs, and the wings and fins were excellent, it's mainly the little doodads around Toothless' head that caused me issue. Hopefully one of the days this week I can make some tweaks and see how they work out.

[identity profile] snapdragon76.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, I want a Toothless plushie now...

I've been trying to find a Toothless action figure with no luck. I did find one on Amazon and he's been taunting me to no end.

If you do make one, I hope you post a picture of the finished project.
