There's nothing intentionally morbid about the lack of parents in Disney films. I think the overwhelming number of dead parents in Disney films is more of a story device to give the young protagonists some conflict and/or simplify the story by including as few extra characters as possible.

That said, after watching the extras on the Aladdin DVD, I'm still a little disappointed that they cut her character from the film.
